Erm… you can simply customise your controls so that Shoot goes on a shoulder button. That way you can charge Blue Rose while fighting.

In DMC3 you could Jump Cancel right from the start. In DMC4 you have to have Enemy Step in order to Jump Cancel. So yes, I get what you mean, but you still need Enemy Step in order to JC in DMC4 — which is one of the decisions Capcom took making me believe they didn’t deliberately intend JCing...

I agree completely. Remember that if you face Arkham in Bloody Palace you have to go through the whole first stage repeatedly and never get Vergil helping you.

Make sure you keep R1 held down and don’t let go of it. If your enemy moves too far away Dante can track down another. Also, and this may seem obvious but I’ll still point it out, if you kill your targeted opponent Dante will lock onto another!
