I want some bread, or some pasta, or some nuts, SO bad. Worse still, my bf's sat behind me eating toast, and has been eating chocolate in front of me all week. I want a medal for this.

That's just cruel. Tell him to go and eat in the cupboard... or a few miles away at least.

Okay, i know that conversation existed in this forum. That the twins weren't old enough when Nero was conceived... i'm sure if you looked, you'd find that thread.

Utterly fed up - just wasted my time with a GP who hasn't been educated about wheelchair services and how the referral process goes:

Me: I need you to refer my son to wheelchair services, please.
GP: Why?
Me: It's all in this report *hands over 4-page document* and having been through CDC, standard procedure is to request a referral. You just have to write a letter.
GP: *read entire thing. Slooooooowly* Nothing on here about needing a buggy
Me: *sigh* yes, I know. They can't specify it in their report - the report is for you to use as leverage in your referral
GP: Who do you need a referral for?
Me: *explodes in brain* Wheelchair. Services
GP: But it's not written down
Me: *thinking: well give me an effing biro and I'll write it down for you* You just need to refer to Wheelchair Services so my son can have mobility help
GP: i don't know about that. Tell you what, I'll leave it with my secretary and if anything crops up, we'll be in touch.

I swear I just wanted to punch his stupid face in. My son is now virtually housebound until the red tape is cut and goodness knows if or when that will be. Just before the summer holidays too. So how in the hell am I supposed to get him to any of his appointments and therapies now? We don't drive, taxi costs are prohibitive and other people cannot be expected to drop everything just so we can get to the clucking shops. We are utterly dependant on having a suitable buggy to get him out and about and now that's not an option. And I don't have £400 to buy one.

Apparently if you have special needs, you must be loaded because everything is uber-expensive. But because we don't live off handouts from the government, we''re dropped to the bottom of the pile. Now I understand it up to a point but seriously, everyone should have equal access to the services that are necessary. If I was an illegal immigrant or some work-shy layabout they'd be falling over themselves to provide for my kid. Clearly I'm doing it wrong...

Tell me about it! My college campus claims everything is "wheelchair" friendly, but it's not. So help me it's not. Half the of the buttons you press to open doors don't even work. There aren't enough ramps and that's just the stuff I've noticed. I'm sure there is more. I know one student spent a day in a wheelchair and then wrote an article for the paper about how messed up our campus is. No one cared.

I swear people make things difficult for people in wheelchairs on purpose.

And the waiting lists are insane. We've been trying to get a solid diagnosis since LAST OCTOBER. Everything is waiting, waiting, waiting. And in the mean time, I have a very lovely little boy with very specific needs which cannot be met because all the clucking funding has been taken from the services that matter and poured into giving people who don't need nor deserve it all the cash.

I vote we invent the kid a jetpack. Screw wheelchairs. I say kids that need wheelchairs should instead get jetpacks.

Seriously though, I really don't understand while the needs of people who can't walk for whatever reason are just not important. Maybe because there aren't that many people like that so it's easy to ignore? I feel like not many people realize how big of a problem it is. I think more people would care if more people knew. But it's something that goes under the radar because most people aren't going to notice the lack of ramps and door buttons that work. It's sad. Just because I can get around fine doesn't mean other people can. -_-'

Thing is, Jake hasn't got physical therapy needs - his problem is behavioural for this particular need and he requires a special buggy to enable him to be securely restrained and transported in the event of what I personally like to refer to as a meltdown. Basically, he has no sense of danger, does not respond to instructions and gets distressed easily so requires something to keep him safe. Commercial buggies are not built for his height and weight and therefore he's broken his already so we need a special one. Only referrals take FOREVER and we need one now. Can't rent one without a disability entitlement which we can't get until a formal diagnosis has been made. If Jake has a meltdown, he goes into a full red-mist-style rage and, as the specialists have put in his report, he is a danger to himself and those in close proximity. If we're out and about and he melts down there is literally nothing we can do except restrain him for his own safety. But without the right equipment, this isn't possible.

And it's getting the right equipment that is a pain. If he had no legs or something, people would be doing more. But because his problems are largely mental and emotional, no one gives a toss.

Oooooh! I apologize for assuming. Well that sucks too. :( You'd think because he could potentially endanger other people they would be doing more. :/

I still think people who can't walk should get jetpacks....
Jetpacks FTW! No need to apologise- he does need mobility help, so as far as I'm concerned your points are just as valid regardless. It's just harder to get the help you need when your problem is less physical than others.

And this is all we need:

Stupid, right? This specialist buggy is nothing more than a stronger style of pushchair that can provide better restraints, stronger support and is able to withstand a temper tantrum of epic proportions. But the price tag is phenomenal. I just don't get it.

So true - whether it's specific needs or some kind of overall deal that prevents someone living a 'normal' life, if it's mental and not physically obvious, they just don't give a crap. My experience trying to get some kind of support for serious anxiety which was making my work and home life unbearable, was actually laughable. I remember at one point the only option I had was to try and get a counsellor at the GP and ask them how I was supposed to continue working in a state of constant dread - or the wanting to just do myself in - and it took them 7 months to get one for me. Anyone actually in danger of seriously hurting themselves at any moment would've been long gone by then. Pft, maybe that's was the point. Shorten those lists.

WTF. You know I swear, sometimes I wonder! 400 for that?! I wish I could help you out, I really really do :(

Meg's Solution to Everthing #588- Pushchairs for Poor People

Get a regular pushchair. Krazy Glue the kid's butt to the seat. Done. :D
I was thinking something similar. If you can't get it, make it. But that would entail having to crucially study one of these buggies to see how they did it and what they used, etc. It's an option, but then again they've probably got some other specs on it that are more mechanical eg. extra brakes and extra weights. Or something.

It's true. No one cares about your emotional problems. It's like they want you do it so that they don't have to deal with you anymore.
