This has got to be one of the silliest arguments I've ever seen. "what if his hair wasn't white? What if it was black, or brown, or blond?" I've never seen anyone argue the hair of Nathan Drake, or Chris Redfield, or, more closely to the subject matter, Sephiroth nor Alucard. It's a design chose, one no different from the long coat or the overall red design, and one that's only come to question recently. It's no different than arguing that hedgehogs are not blue.

Yeah, NT changed it because they were going for shock value, but I think people forget that the idea was to change it back to white before the end of the game.

What do you mean hedgehogs are not blue?! O_o

Shock value?
When Capcom had them designing Dante they wanted to be shocked so they picked the most radical departure from the original design. In this case you could call shock value.

Never said they weren't blue. I just said that it'd be like arguing so would be nutty.

No, really, they ain't blue.

Pfft, next thing you know, he'll be spewing crazy hogwash like "not all plumbers are Italian", or something.
I have a plummer uncle... and he's Mexican. And his name is Mario. And he's got a brother, my uncle, Luis. So, yeah, not Italian.

SPOILER]
I know what shock value is. But I wouldn't consider a haircut that. Just goes with the whole idea of wanting him to be, you know, different.

Yeah, but with such a drastic alteration you can't tell me that they weren't counting on there been a huge shock to the fans. In fact, that was the point.

Apparently, Dante having black hair was enough to make the Internet implode during the revelation of the game at TGS reveal back in 2010. It was enough to make the entire internet descend into hellish chaos for weeks, with people posting reaction videos and angry comments on a near constant basis, their reddened, swelling, infuriated faces all spewing one thing: "WHY DOESN'T DANTE HAVE WHITE HAIR?!"

Not "Wait, what's the combat like?" Not "Hey, what's the story behind the game?"....just the hair. They hadn't seen anything else, or heard more than a few, swear-less snippets of dialogue.

And don't anybody deny the inital gut reaction, either. I was there...I witnessed this collective, shrieking outcry first-hand.

Oh god. Here we go again. One more time, even if initially look was a problem, neither story nor gameplay was good enough to convince everyone that it was decent DMC game. Casualised difficulty and gameplay didn't helped it either. Nobody argues that visual change was NT decision. It's just that they didn't do enough to remove feeling that name "Dante" feels slapped atop of some random dude with sword and guns.

............what story?
WHAT gameplay?
You know, THAT one that should convince people that look doesn't matter and how he looks is irrelevant since it still DMC and it still Dante both in personality and in gameplay. AKA something that never happened.

It was a announcement trailer, a teaser. Teasers don't usually give you much info other than "THIS IS A THING THAT'S GOING TO BE COMING AT SOME POINT!" No real in-depth hints that point out plot or gameplay, just "Here's Dante with black hair and a white tuft, he's fighting demons, he got tortured as a kid." That is all that can be gathered, then you have the snippets of information the devs revealed in interviews, about how "there's a reason for the black hair, it'll make sense in the story" and "this is a reimagining of Dante and its origin." We wouldn't get trailers that reveal story or gameplay until later, like, y'know, pretty much every other marketing team does.

But nope, no one listened, people didn't wait, and just went insane complaining about the color of Dante's hair, how different everything looked, and worst of all listening to unfounded rumors about dial-a-combo and overheating guns. Alex Jones even said "It's so crazy seeing giant threads on forums about Dante's hair not being white when you can see that tuft of white hair in the trailer."

It's totally fine to come to a conclusion and not dig something when you have more concrete information, but people went off the deep end pretty much immediately. There was no way of knowing what the story, let alone the gameplay was going to be like from a 90 second teaser trailer comprised entirely of CG and without a finalized design for the main character.

Did they have a duty to ensure that the reveal trailer reassured folks that it was still gonna be this or that? Maybe, but probably not, considering their aim was to emphasize that it was a different kind of DMC.

It's pretty obvious, that while his initial look was problem, there was another problem that you conveniently prefer to ignore. Bruised kid who looks like drug addict hanging from the hooks and smoking cigarettes BECUZ ITZ SO COOL AND EDGY was much more annoying than any hair color they could have come up with.
There was heavily implied story in this trailer, you have to be blind not to see it. And it's tone has little to nothing to with originals, so yeah, when people saw something that looked nothing like DMC and with it's name slapped atop, sure it was annoying.

I've probably said this quite a few times (then again, everyone else is on repeat too, it seems), but the outcry about the hair? I categorize it one of two ways:

1) People blew that out of proportion (as in, people say most of the complaints were about the hair, when they may not have been)

or

2) There was a very vocal minority, making it bad for everyone else--no matter where they stand on the spectrum.

I'm going with the latter; yes, most of us saw what happened--be it here or elsewhere--and there was a great deal of b*tching about the hair...though not necessarily from a lot of people, as so many assume, but from the same handful of people, over and over.

Handful is being used loosely here (obviously), merely as a comparison to the size of the fan-base.

That said? Not denying that there were knee-jerk reactions; people do that--all of us have done that, for one thing or another--so I think it's fair to say that particular argument should no longer be on trial. Once the dust settled, very few people clung to that knee-jerk reaction; some of them grew to like the game (if only marginally), while others still maintained it wasn't for them.

Moral of the story? You can't make people like what you do, just by virtue of the fact that you like it. However, people should at least attempt to make informed decisions, instead of parroting the same recycled information (some of which is incorrect) continuously. Again, you can't force them to make those informed decisions--but I do agree that they should at least try, before giving their final verdict.

Edit: Just FYI, this wasn't directed at any one person in particular; this is merely just my thoughts on the matter. :)

IIRC, I seem to remember people making a proper fuss over the fact that Cole MagGrath (in his first I2 gameplay trailer) grew his hair and thus no longer looked like a generic bald supremacist.

Generally I agree with stuff you said. But since we were talking about 2010 trailer, there was no way for people to inform themselves with it. Because of that it was made to make first impression. Now irony is that Capcom wanted negative reaction and they got it. But for some reason many people trying to blame now it on those who gave this negative reaction, despite Capcom openly stating it was their goal.
