There is something in his hand. Perhaps baby Nero?

That's what most people seem to believe. I still don't know what to think, I'm not entirely convinced.

Dante and Nero aren't in the teaser at all... unless you count the infant theory.

We have Vergil... in a hood, with his head down. Could be in mourning, for all we know.

Other than trying to hide something, he looks as if he's not in a hurry to go anywhere. Maybe on his way to hear some bad news... or leave the area entirely.

I think people have been wanting more information for so long that it's made them delusional wrecks. XD They can't seem to admit that this teaser isn't ultimately all that significant.

I feel like I just have to clear a few things up, since so many people are intent on losing their minds. If this were anyone but Vergil, there would be no question that he's simply holding the cloak closed in a comfortable position. The apparent need for this to be a prequel scene has convinced people that 1. He's holding Nero 2. The city street is the same one leading to the church, and the reason for the obvious differences is that it's many years earlier, and 3. Perhaps the poster is proof that Nevan's the mother?

Seriously, does anyone realize how crazy all of this sounds, and how farfetched it is even compared to the madness that is the existing Devil May Cry lore? It's not even amusing, anymore, it's just wasteful. The worst part is that it seems people came into this thread without reading any of it and half of the new posts are simply restating the old posts.

Mark my words- this trailer is just Vergil walking down the street with a cloak because that's a traditional anime trope for a mysterious character's return. There are no babies, no lost arms, no lost eyes. Vergil will return much like we've seen him in the past, and the events likely happen near the main DMC 4 campaign.

If you're going to have premature, irrational expectations, they might as well be about movesets, weapons, levels, bosses, enemies, and other story elements, rather than about Nero. I mean, can't Vergil be his own character for again for a moment? Why do we have to show him this much disrespect, huh?

I see nothing but respect for Vergil in this thread.

Edit: Actually, I see more than that. I see reverence towards him at every turn. A little too much, actually.

This doesn't change the fact that his right eye is still covered up in DT mode for some reason. He might not be half-blind, but I still see a scar or a mark of some kind leading from his eye to the left side of his face (under his left eye).

There are no marks of that type on Dante's DT face, making me wonder why they even designed Vergil that way to begin with (unless it was somehow significant).

Of course Vergil's going to have some sort of anime trope... this is DMC4 we're talking about here.

@scionicspectre: Sorry but to yourself and others who keep saying "Don't get too hyped up or overthink things" etc I disagree. This is new information for the DMC fans. DmC had had a lot of coverage. It's understandable and acceptable for people to want to speculate theories. It's how these forums are going to gain new posts, new members, new threads. Yes it might all be similar stuff being thrown around, that's to be expected. But who would honestly sit and browse through everything that has been discussed before chipping in with their view.

Please don't discredit others simply wishing to express their hopes, views, expectations.

But that's not Vergil, it's Nero's DT. Which presents some strong similarities with Vergil's demon form, but it's not Vergil itself.

Why is Nero's eye covered up? Stylistic choice? That would interfere with his swordfighting skills. I'm going to continue to believe that this is Vergil until I see his actual DT form for myself.

Yeah, I guess it's not quite as bad as I've made it out to be. I suppose I just had higher expectations of this community for some reason. I'm fully satisfied with letting it go and allowing the game to speak for itself, but I felt I had to voice the other side of the conversation since this thread has been overwhelmingly one-dimensional. I was getting a bit rude about it, though, which was clearly unnecessary.

I just hope people are ready to get their hearts broken if they have so much invested in these theories. I think it's only fair to Capcom to have reasonable expectations so that, when they release a great update, we aren't all sitting here ragging on it because we wanted something else. Personally, if they ignore or disprove the Nero baby theory and focus entirely on Vergil, I won't mind one bit so long as what we get is a good game. "Resolving the Nero kerfuffle" is on the very bottom of my desired feature list for this Special Edition.

But again, you're right, people should have their fun and I have no right to tell them off for it when speculation is such a core theme driving this community. I just hope that, in having our ideas challenged, we can come up with more reasonable and satisfying ideas.

It's on the bottom of mine, as well. They could leave Nero out entirely for all I care. All I want is a good Vergil campaign.

However, I don't think anyone's putting much stock in the "infant theory" anymore since viper pretty much confirmed that he's not holding his son in his arms.

That is, unless Capcom proves us wrong at some point. But I'm not really interested in what they say about that anymore, either.

Don't get me wrong, I can see where you're coming from. There's usually two sides to a story. I didn't mean to come across as confrontational towards your points. As I said, it's a good thing to have all of these ideas. It brings the forums to life.

Though as you put it so well, it'd seem pointless to get our hopes up too much. Even though that's just to be expected, really. It will seem quite dream crushing if there really is nothing to this.

I guess everybody has their expectations. So I see where you're coming from.

While I agree with people flying off the handle over a poster that is supposedly Nevan also means that somehow Nevan is tied to anything (Nevan was locked in a tower in the demon world until she fought and was killed by Dante - she never even saw Vergil), I think you're getting a little too standoffish about this babby-under-the-cloak theory. He's definitely not holding his hands at his sides, not even holding his weapon, and it certainly looks like there's more than just his arms crossed under the cloak. Not sure if you're an artist at all or anything, but you tend to get an eye for how cloth falls over a body, and can usually figure out a physique fairly accurately, and that's what I and some other people seem to be seeing. So either there's a baby under that cloak, or Vergil's got himself some baby head-sized biceps.

Yes it's a common anime trope to toss a tattered cloak over a character, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's all it's doing. It's hiding the identity of someone we clearly know given that they deliberately showed off his very noticeable boots and coat hem. They're hiding something else at the top of that cloak, something clearly held in his arms.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't really give a hoot one way or another, but this isn't exactly circular logic, so much as it is Capcom adding onto what little we knew about Nero's origins (which people REALLY want to know about) and what connections there are to Vergil. One of the only things that we know for sure from the game is that Nero was found wrapped in a black cloak, and that he has some connection to Vergil. Now we have Vergil walking through Fortuna (or a city like it), hiding something under a black cloak, which he's damn near cradling to his chest. Capcom is expanding on its own information; this new theory is so widespread because it falls perfectly in line with what little we knew before.

Could it be something completely different? Suuuuure it could, but seriously, looking at what we have at face value, it seems like a decent enough theory to be true.

And c'mon, being excited about Vergil in the game isn't being overshadowed by this theory, because it explains Nero's origin, but more than that tells us how the Big V is actually part of anything anymore. The theory of babby Nero under that cloak can solidify Vergil's involvement in a meaningful way, it makes up for him just retreading Dante's campaign in DMC3.

My only beef is how short this trailer (er, teaser) is. If it's coming out this year, couldn't they have given us a little more to work with? ^^; Just...just a little, Capcom. That's all we ask, lol.

I know there are a lot of people against the whole "Nero is Vergil's son" theory, but honestly, I'm okay with it. I'm okay with pretty much any origin story they can come up with for him, as long as it isn't too outlandish--but a daddy Vergil? Well, damn...that's oddly cute, in its own way.

I'm hoping, if that really is baby Nero hidden under the cloak in Vergil's arms, that they explain the whole age thing, as well. So many people chewed back and forth about whether he was even old enough to father a child, or whether (Dante) and him were even 30 at the time of DMC4 to begin with--so all in all, aside from some extra gameplay and some extra cutscenes, I really do hope they answer the questions that have been asked for these past seven years.

Who here thinks Vergil has his middle fingers up under the cloak and when he finally finds Dante in Fortuna he'll throw his hands out from under the cloak, stick his fingers up at Dante and say "**** you. That's for leaving me out of vanilla DMC 4".

Lol, I dunno, LoD...that doesn't seem very in-character for Vergil. Dante, maybe, but not Verg. ;)

Heh, good point; Vergil's always been depicted as being the more stoic and tidy of the two, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. :P
