ScarJo's casting isn't whitewashing, but an unfortunate reality in the film industry. The studio wants the movie to ultimately be successful, casting an unknown actress, in a property that's practically unheard of outside of the anime fandom, is just not an option for these people.

The Star Wars comparison was a good one, because that is a franchise that outshines any name. A franchise that can make practically anyone the next big thing. Daisy Ridley, unheard of until Force Awakens and boom, now she's getting calls left and right. She's the frontrunner for Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot for example.

And you mention Christoph Waltz, yea, he broke out pretty big because he was in a TARANTINO movie. That's a good way to get noticed.

Ghost in the Shell is not going to make anyone a star unless they already were one.

Yeah I see what you are saying and in a lot of cases if a franchise/series is big enough they can make a relatively unknown actor/actress a star. However if the name/franchise of the movie alone isnt enough to sell tickets then in most cases it needs a big name to sell those tickets and attract that attention. Something like Star Wars sells on name alone these days and people will buy tickets regardless, simply because its Star Wars.

Something like Ghost in the shell simply isnt big enough worldwide to sell on name alone, so they need a recognised face/actor/actress to attract the attention to it. There will be rare cases where a relatively unknown franchise/movie will do well with a handful of 'unknown' cast members, usually if a movie/performances are really good & word of mouth spreads it but most studios wont take this risk if the movie budget is too high. Sometimes a director/producers name alone can sell movies (Tarantino was another good example). Studios want to make a profit and if there is any chance that they wont then they would rather spend a little more on a bigger star to get the attention to sell the tickets.

Rupert Sanders isnt a big enough name director to sell this movie on his name alone, and the franchise name isnt big enough worldwide to sell on that alone so they needed something else.

absolitude

the devil is not as black as he painted
yeah the mentioning of edge of tomorrow in previous posts is a splendid example.. GITS could've done that actually, or maybe you could demand them to do it, change the character's name altogether so it won't bother as much, i don't think it's too late for them to do it..

EDIT : and with all the controversy following this movie, will they actually make it a good one?

I understand & agreed with all that earlier, using a big name to push this, however it's still taking a risk.
Hollywood takes a risk in an audience unfamiliar with Ghost In The Shell hoping they'll see it just for Scarlett Johansson.
But the anime/manga audience already familiar with Videos, books, artwork, games, of that series that's been well loved since how many years now, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Turns 10 This Year. Here's Why the Sci-Fi Anime Series Is Still Important
.

And this is already well known, Ghost In The Shell isn't a relatively unknown franchise. If it was then people most likely wouldn't be upset over the casting choice.
The title alone Ghost In The Shell already caught their attention & more than likely it was a guarantee a large part of that audience was going to see it just on name alone.

So what part of the audience is Hollywood doing this for, the audience that's unfamiliar with Ghost In The Shell & MIGHT see it just for Scarlett Johansson.

Or the audience that's well familiar with Ghost In The Shell & said YEA I'M GOING TO SEE IT just from hearing Hollywood is making a live-action movie of it.

Especially when casting choice sparks a growing dislike.

I honestly think it's Hollywood that's going about the wrong way in cashing in on things like this.

Pretty much summed it up right there, to those who are familiar with it they would have watched it on name alone but everyone else who isn't now knows about it because it has a big name in it. So many who didn't have an interest in name alone will watch it for her (for example) or at least that's what they are hoping.

So basically all whats gonna be left from Ghost in the Shell will be that "animu" adaptation with Johanson as main lead. Great. Also whole "Waltz got breakthrough because Tarantino" is bull. There are many actors who're playing in Tarantino film who rarely get any important roles despite being cast by him. Well here is thing: Inglorious Basterds got delayed for years because Tarantino wasn't sure about cast and ended up picking German actor to play it. So here's is a thing: if you just want to get money for a film you don't care who to cast as long as it is sells. If you want to do really good film you gonna rip your ass to find decent cast. So whole "don't blame a messenger" act looks more like an apologism than like truth. So in the end if somebody gonna treat GiTS like another ANimU of course it wouldnt matter to somebody if she was white, black or man in the first place.
