DmC: Eastern to Western

Because of what's going on in the world, governments controlling their people, poisoning them with various chemicals and whatever else might be in the food, putting out foods that are more likely to make a person gain weight than lose it, it's hard to say that they took that from They Live. You could say they were mimicking current events and just using the idea of demons being responsible. There are conspiracy theorists that think aliens, and who knows what else, are responsible for what's going on. Just as there are some that think it's devil worshipers. The game has a lot of parallels in today's world that were also shown in past films which makes it difficult to say it was all taken from They Live. Even the idea of trying to reveal people for what they really are is happening, no matter the consequences. If you want to go by some articles, it's even killing people.

After watching They Live today, yeah I saw a lot of things that were the same, but I also saw how much it's like current situations so I can't say for certain that they took it all from the movie. It's too similar to the problems with banks, the government, food companies, what's going on with Monsanto and everything else that people have theorized is trying to take over the world.

the whole "corporations are greedy and the media lies to us" is absolutely the most shallow societal exploration any kind of writer could choose, unless they make it interesting. They Live made it a tolerable cliche by introducing the aliens that ran everything behind the scenes, which only the protagonist and a few others (whom society labeled crazies) could see.

They copied this plot device exactly. That isn't "based on" so much as "we copied the script and did a find and replace on certain names"

I've never seen anything based on real life conspiracy theories that didn't have that exact same thing happen in one way or another. Whether or not you think it's a shallow theme, it's never going to get tired for a lot of people when it relates to what they see every day.

As for DmC being exactly like They Live, it's still hard for me to say for certain. What was going on then is going on now, just with it being talked of more. To me it seems more like NT taking what Anonymous (or any group like them) is doing, making it more as literal fighting and ending it with them getting what they want. Everything being revealed with undeniable proof. Yes, that was done in They Live. And I'm sure that, if NT had the chance, they would have included more of today's conspiracies. The ones they included are common and done in almost everything. They might have included their own parody of Monsanto, or the people who rate films. They might have included secret societies which is also something that's common. DmC probably wasn't released as the product NT would have originally wanted. It's rare for that to happen.

Sorry if some of this doesn't make much sense or went off track. It's been a bad day, and my mind still isn't straight.

the only reason people aren't tired of it right now is because it was a cliche 30 years ago, and nobody in this game's target age group remembers it. It would be like 30 years from now someone makes a story about psychic space samurai with laser swords that use their powers to overthrow a government that uses a planet destroying space station to rule everyone.

The only reason ninja theory's getting away with it is the people that actually watched the movie when it came out are too old to care about videogames marketed toward angsty teen

Conspiracy theories have always been around, and there's always plenty of people willing to listen. Movies and games are just another medium for them. Just as games are considered a part of the conspiracies. It's not something that was just cliche 30 years ago, it's something that's here to stay and be reused.

The reason why they're not being accused of plagiarism is, when looking at the whole, there are similarities to many other things. Killing an angel by ripping out the heart was in the Prophecy films, as was a nephilim saving the world. Broadcasting video to the masses was also in Dark Angel, something that was done by another rich guy. The hero having his memories restored was in various movies and games, Blood Omen 2 being the only one I can think of at the moment. Having fights take place inside a character's mind was something that happened in The Cell, and that was a pretty big part of DmC since that was how Dante recovered weapons and abilities from his parents. And these are things NT never said were used as inspirations. If they had made Mundus take the form of a cliche demon like Sparda was shown as, but with bigger horns and a lot more muscle, you could say it's from the old image people used for the devil or like Darkness from Legend. There were areas that resembled paintings and reminded me a lot of Labyrinth. The idea that Vergil died and came back to life after a journey through his own hell, that's like Flatliners. People being controlled by one demon or more, that's like The Stand. There was even a group of people that knew exactly what was going on and were trying to do much what Dante was doing. He was revealed for what he was, too, except he got away and everyone that followed him died. So it's not exactly like They Live. In the Stand there were characters that saw what Randal Flagg was. They didn't need aides like in They Live. They either saw him in dreams--which Flagg brought them into to warn them out of his way, or he let them see after meeting him. One could see what he was no matter what. The Stand even went by the idea of practices of the government being ways to keep people under control, and ultimately the doom of the world. Conspiracy theories again. And the Stand is considered one of the greatest stories. So DmC isn't a copy of They Live. It has a lot in common with more than just that.

Edit: Now that I think about it, it's a lot like Dark City, too. Just an extra example of a possible source. In fact I'd say it has a lot more in common with Dark City than They Live.

It's not just the broader storyline, but all the small touches and minor plot inconsistencies (things that make sense in the context of the movie, but make no sense in the game) that give it away as being a rip-off

Here's an album of iconic scenes from the movie. Getting DmC vibes yet?

And then there's the endings. In carpender's movie, the aliens are physically pretty weak; deception is their only means to control humanity, so when their presence was revealed to the world, they were helpless to prevent humanity from retaking the planet. Demons, on the other hand, do have a plan B. They're going to put those bulletproof hides, chainsaw hands, razor teeth, and violent dispositions to use. They're going to rule humanity by force, and what can dante do to protect an entire planet from simultaneous demonic assault.

Combining the worlds was a horrible idea, but the ending was not tailored for the DmC universe, it was copied out of a movie word for word. Even the ending where scenes of humanity awakening to the demonic presence flash on the screen are almost a direct rip from the movie (although the game uses twitter and twitter posted pictures, instead of live scenes).

Oh, and tameem's personal appearance at the end where he announces "DEMONS, WE HAVE AWOKEN!"
for the entire movie, the aliens urge humanity to remain asleep, so when humanity realizes what's up, this line is delivered right at the end. The "stay asleep" message was never really used in DmC, yet the same "we have awoken" victory shout is used.

Not only were their writers too terrible to make an original plot, they didn't even realize that some of plot elements they were copying would no longer make sense. But they used them anyway.

I have zero respect for ninja theory's writers. This game's writing is the single most terrible aspect of it, and it very nearly stopped me from buying the game alltogether. Luckily the rest of the good outweighed the plagairized ****pile that is DmC's script, so I bought it. Haven't regretted it either. I just tell myself the game is a poorly executed parody whenever it's trying to dump plot on me; it helps with the disgust.

I remember Dark City, it was a pretty good film. There are similarities with the concept of humans being controlled.

Anyway it was stated if I recall that they did get inspiration from They Live so it's no shocker or a conspiracy, nor has it been an idea that's been done before. You could even say DmC has similarties with the Matrix where the machines have control of the humans lives, who go on blissfully unaware they are in a dream.

To be fair, the "staying asleep" message HAS been used, even if not by the demons themselves:

Since it has been PUBLICLY used by Vergil in his video message, and the video has been broadcasted by Raptor News Network, which is arguably the most followed channel in DmC's world, it DOES make sense that some humans (ok, I can agree that Tameem cameos can be irritating, but that isn't relevant for this point) use it, once they recognized the truth in the Masked Man's words.

I saw Dark City again yesterday. It was actually better than I remembered.

DmC has a lot of similarities to any sci-fi films where people are being controlled. I'm surprised I didn't think of the Matrix. Then again I never was much of a Keanu fan.

I'm not sure though that it's fair to say that the people being controlled is really a significant part of the plot, at least as much as it was in the movies being discussed, Matrix and Dark City. I feel like the main story of the game is Dante's family history, while all these other plot "inspirations" are just broad concepts that made it easier to justify the cool game design elements in DmC: the world trying to kill dante, jumping in and out of limbo, hidden text on the wall, etc.

It's an underlying theme, that creates the context in which Dante's story plays out. It's not central like in Matrix surely, but it's something that is continuously recurring, even if only in the form parts of the environment.

You could say it's either his family history, or his attempt at adjusting to family again that is the main point of the story. After living alone for so long, I'm sure that getting his memories back didn't make him suddenly trust his brother.

I personally think that those two aspects are both equally important, from a general prespective.
While to Dante in particular surely "family issues" are the main focus, not to mention the real reason for him joining the Order at first, it's also true that the Order is fighting for freeing mankind, and references to humans living "in a manufactured illusion", like Vergil says, are constant through the missions, especially those preceding bosses like Bob Barbas or the Succubus, not to mention Mundus's palace; moreover, the problem of what to do with mankind once the demons' deception has been destroyed is the reason that ruins the newfound brotherly bound that Dante and Vergil just managed to create.
So I think those two aspects are tightly interwoven, the "political" aspect framing, creating the context for Dante's personal issues.

What Evil said. It was 1 and 2 that felt more like its own thing. 3 and 4 made everything seem anime like. DMC 3 was Inuyasha and 4 was Bleach.
I knew DMC1 and, out of irony, DMC2 had so many things so original. DMC3 and DMC4 ripped from both Inuyasha and Bleach respectively? Yes! I knew there were many similarities of the story and characters of DMC3 to Inuyasha as well as to DMC4 to Bleach, not to mention DMC4's story was like Twilight with Dante adding in the mix as supporting star.

And this is why my most fav Dante is DMC1 Dante!! I can't believe a lot of others liked the DMC3 (even though he is my 2nd most fav Dante) and DMC4 Dante (well, he's basically DMC3 Dante with a campy cowboy uncle attitude) which are retcons of DMC1 Dante and an anime character expy, especially Inuyasha.

Hey... I know how to really make the fanbase lose their ****...

We reboot it... again... and then we make Dante half-demon...

... HALF-ALIEN. :w00t:

Yes! Make it happen, Capcrap! And make Dante have the Devil Bringer... with Trish's/Lady's/Eva's brain/soul/heart fused with his arm. :troll:

Ha, the ****storm that would ensue... I wouldn't even participate, I would just watch.

And make him a Jersey Shore douche. We already went the other way with the "bad-attitude" Dante. Now we need to make him insufferable in other ways.

And make him a redhead. I don't mean the deep wine "sexy" red kind, I mean all-out Carrot Top.

Say hello to your next Donte.
