Do you think that if Capcom made a game just about Vergil, would it sell well?

A Vergil game....

Well, there are a couple options.
1) Pre-DMC3. Pros: fill in gaps of Vergil's personality and goals, explain Nero's background. We basically know nothing up until he met Arkham in that library and the timing of that is pretty unclear too (I've heard that it was about a year before DMC3, but not really know). Cons: a main character that's even younger than DMC3 is less "epic," shaggy dog story with a forgone conclusion, little possibility of Dante cameo.
2) Post-DMC3, in the Demon World. Whether you somehow pretend that final cutscene with Mundus didn't happen/happened later, or that Mundus decided to let Vergil run around futilely and learn despair in hell. Pros: show what Hell is like, how Vergil became Nelo Angelo, maybe something about Sparda. Cons: very, very forgone conclusion, what is Hell like?
3) Resurrection plot. Someone somewhere by accident or design manages to resurrect Vergil (maybe they were aiming for Sparda). Think the Leon/Judas game-long cameo in Tales of Destiny 2. Pros: potentially cleanest option in terms of timeline bs. Cons: asspull.

Oh, and there are alternate realities, like in the DMC2 novel, I guess.

Where there's a will, there's a way, basically. As long as you want to make a Vergil game, you can find an excuse. The important part is to remember what you're aiming for: Vergil fanservice.

I don't think it would sell very good. You may think it will but it won't, and here's why;

Player: Oh WOW! A DMC about Vergil's past/how he fought Mundus! Awesome! The gameplay is so fresh! I love it! I love the challenges and the awesomeness of the game! SO FREAKIN" COOL! I'm gonna play this game all night, win all the trophies, and kick ass in bloody palace! Yes!...I miss Dante though."

See? Right there. That's why the game won't really sell as much; Dante not being there. Vergil is a character of mystery and seriousness with him. It's just DMC2 in blue to me. People will miss the wise cracking, red coat wearing, gun totting bad ass that is Dante, and will demand to play as him, but you can't, because this is Vergil's game, and Dante will probably be a side playable character like how Vergil was in DMC3, just back tracking what Vergil's been doing. And Sparda? Hell yeah, he'll sell good, but people will complain that he looks wierd in that purple outfit, and not as stylish as Dante or Vergil. Also, if there was a Sparda game, would he be in DT the entire game, wouldn't that be a bit over kill since Sparda fought Mundus and the demons while in DT form?

Well for 1, you could adapt the first light novel just telling it from vergil's perspective. Dante's there just unlockable and doing his own thing.

You could combine two and three by having vergil being ressurected in the demon world after dmc1.

This is good, isn't it?

but vergil isnt as silent as DMC2 Dante. he is actually a little bit sarcastic too.

I think the problem right now is that people dont have faith in capcom to pull Vergil off successfully so they would be skeptical.

I'd say the best time to do a vergil spinoff was after dMC3 when the character was in the height of his popularity.

I honestly have though about this for quite some time now (since im a huge vergil fan) and i would be extremely exited if they made a game just about vergil, either before or after the events of DMC3. I mean, vergil didnt just magically turn into Nelo Angelo instantly after he was defeated by Mundus, right? how did he gain all of that power

and as you can see i am new to the forums.

Well, it would have to be a game that can stand on it's own since Capcom would provably like to make it accesible to anyone rahter than just the fans. It would have to be a story that can stand on it's own without the player having to have previous knowledge of the franchise.

True. Some easter eggs or something equally simple, should be enough to bridge this game with older DMC-ones if they did that.

Well maybe they can introduce new features to the game that appeal to more than just fans of DMC.

To succeed they'd need to advertice it right, as well. Personally I wouldn't want it to be an origin story but a seperate unique story that hasn't been told before.

so i think maybe setting it after 1 with vergil in hell might be a good idea because its not a prequel so more freer in what it can do.

They also have to worry about other characters showing up. Vergil couldn't have just been by himself through all that. the past DMC games always had a female character, so I'm thinking Trish could help him. but just betray him, Vergil fights Mundus one last time and tries killing himself along with Mundus. Mundus lives but Vergil, not so fortunate. Finally Nelo is created, and thus leads to DMC1.

That's more a flashback or the basis of a trish spinoff.

this would be poorly explaining what happened. so what, he explodes and turns into nelo angelo?
and this game probably would be better off if vergil didnt have some female assailant

Well if you do a game before 3, you can sneak in all sorts of cameos.

If you do it after 1, the cameos become less unless Vergil visits limbo and sees all the deceased villains or npcs.
Or maybe the villains are doomed to he'll.

I'd give him his own supporting cast tho.

If they made it in between 3 and 1 then i still see alot of room for creativity. remember in DMC 4 how dante hat the dreadnought DT form? well what if they employed some type of armor system where on vergil's quest for power or whatever, he collects different sets of armor.

not really given that people might not want to play too much as vergil that is a brainwashed butt monkey of mundus.

no reason to prolong it.
