I understand exactly what you mean. I enjoy old 1970 kung fu films and Godfrey Ho's notorious works, albeit mine aren't stupid rare like those ones. The looks I get when trying to explain Monkey with 72 magic...It sucks to like things that no one else does.
Let's say your favorite movie is this obscure independent Mexican drama film that was never published outside of the country, only exists on DVD in that region, and you know it will never exist as bluray because even there it didn't make a splash. Worse than that, pretend you don't speak Spanish, that means that a VHS is also out of the question. Well, this happens to me,
a lot.
Liking foreign movies and niche games means liking the rare things which means hard to find and most often expensive, too. Ever heard of a movie called Mary Is Happy, Mary Is Happy? It's on YouTube but good luck finding it on video. How about a Chinese romantic anthology called Spicy Love Soup? Saw it on the Independent Film Channel once but outside of that it doesn't seem to exist, even they don't know where to get a copy. How about that Mexican version of Lady for a Day, La Marquesa del Barrio? You wanna play Haunting Ground? It's going to cost you a pretty penny, and so will a lot of the best horror games from those days. You like Shadows of the Damned or KuOn? Well, good luck finding their artbooks.
Liking things that are rare or unpopular sucks.
Well, I lucked out, I have a few friends who are film and game lovers like myself so I have a few people to share tastes with. Anyway, if people give you crap for liking Hong Kong cinema that's hokey tell them to kiss your ass, they don't pay your bills, you do and you work for the money that pays for those movies so is they don't like it they can suck it. Modern action owes kung fu films a hell of a lot and so does mainstream, so even if they're quirky there is a place for them.I understand exactly what you mean. Fantastically put my friend. My buds like movies and games, but not like any of my stuff. Still, it gets a conversation started when they see things like "Full Metal Ninja", "Robo Vampire" and "Bruce Lee Fist of Unicorn" all on one shelfWell, I lucked out, I have a few friends who are film and game lovers like myself so I have a few people to share tastes with. I can't see why people enjoy naps. They throw your whole day away.
