Nocturne/Shin Megami Tensei V

@Morgan Thank you for the info.

2nd. Question. Do the characters have arcs much like the Persona character s? A compelling story basically
Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes. But you won't get all of them in the first playthrough, because out of eight total party members [including the Protagonist/Naoya], four of them are optional, and there are two routes to the story [SEBEC route or Snow Queen route] that will lock in 1 or 3 additional party slots with those other characters. You can fill the remaining slots with the optional party members, but the party limit is 5. Once you get those five, they can't be swapped out, and the optional allies can't be attained. Entire scenes are different depending on choices and party members, so there are different dialogues available based on that, and each of them has their own individual ending to resolve their story.

Naoya is a "silent protagonist" [with dialogue trees to define his character] and not much backstory, but the manga gives him one [as well as his name, since he has three different ones and none of them are official via Atlus].

Wow I got two different responses to that question haha. @Demi-fiend Thanks for your comment but I avoided the spoilers so as to not ruin anything. @Morgan That does sound like Persona to me. It peaked my interest actually.

Now finally the final question. Without spoiling it how does our boy Dante Factor into all of this?

Now finally the final question. Without spoiling it how does our boy Dante Factor into all of this?
Short answer: Not much! He's replacing the "intended cameo", but that's it.

Long answer: Dante only factored in to the Maniax/international release of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, which isn't a Persona game per se (Persona is a branch of SMT, not the other way around, etc). The default cameo character was Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV, but that character was omitted from China and Korea's releases of SMT Nocturne, for "unexplained reasons" which more or less means "because of his design". Really.

For context, Raidou debuted in the third Devil Summoner game (another SMT spinoff) and because of the pre-WWII setting, his main design was not just a tribute to Yasunori Kato of Teito Monogatari, but directly associated with Taisho-era Japan and its invasions/war crimes against the aforementioned countries (China + Korea).

So, they didn't want Imperialist imagery in their game, in goes Dante to be 1000% less political. All he is is a cool, recurring boss battle for the protagonist (insert obv joke about him having more personality in SMT3 than DMC2) and that's it. Almost trivial involvement. The NA/EU releases of SMT3 were Maniax by default and got a memeworthy sticker on the cover to show for it, and those audiences were none the wiser. The later release of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax Chronicle Edition that came free with the fourth Devil Summoner game made Raidou the default cameo again. The newest SMT Nocturne HD remaster is based on this last edition, with the Maniax pack DLC for Dante fans.

Raidou's costume DLC for Persona 5 is still omitted in China and Korea, though. And I haven't yet looked up how they're going to handle this HD remaster if at all.

@Morgan That was a wonderful explanation and it explains Dante's role in the game. Thank you!

@Demi-fiend Of course Dante is working for the job lol. Money, money, money. Haha.

Thank you folks for hyping me up for the Remaster. Jack Front and Dante being in the same game is funny to me.

Personally: Silky, and Lucifer are my favorite Shadow/Persona/demons with Angel and Jack O Lantern being my next favorite.

I was never really into the monster-collecting aspect of either Persona or SMT.

There was a time where I enjoyed P4 for its story, but I've grown weary of Persona altogether.

The only reason I'm into SMTN is because of Demi-fiend's moveset.

Besides Prototype, Kingdoms of Amalur, and Warframe, this is the only game where it has all the powers I could ever want -- and more.

Also, watching an expert player run through the game solo while managing all these powers is incredible to watch.

Beat me to the news.

Anyway, the rumor is that this is based on the Japanese release. That means that Dante won't be the guest character but rather Raidou from devil summoner.
He will be in the game just have to buy him as dlc so I recommend buying the deluxe edition unless you wanna wait till game is free on ps plus then get dlc

I'm buying it physically. THere is no deluxe for that. Plus, the listings for the Deluxe content don't mention Dante, at all.
MOre than anything, I want to know who they'll get to do the voice.

It’s called the maniax pack where you could switch out the character that’s why I said it’s better to get deluxe cuz it comes included and he is in the game proof:

Voiced by my boy Reuben Langdon!

/chanting under breath

Who?
I'm afraid I'm going to have to confiscate your DMC fan card.

Nah he was a means to a end
No, he was very much picked for the part. Not only did he audition, partake and made the character iconic, his voice was used for Dante again in the only other appearance he's made in a Kamiya game. Doesn't get more slap 'the original voice of Dante' than that.

I'm not really liking that, at all. Reuben Langdon is fine as his versions of Dante, but when you slap his voice on the ones others already have it doesn't sound right to me. He has the wrong personality for that Dante. I think I'll be sticking with the Japanese cast on this one.

Edit:
Why hasn't' anyone posted this? They're giving it away. It's the official thing, too.

I thought Langdon was fine for the trailer.

Technically Matthew Kaminski voiced Dante in the original release. He was the voice of Dante in 2 and reprised that role for Viewtiful Joe and this game I believed.

Langdon felt like a decent replacement but it's only a short trailer. So I can't really say if he'd be good or bad for a whole remake for 1 or 2. I'd give him a short.

Combs and Kaminski could come back for other roles. There's always Sparda, Mundus or Grue.

Congratulations, your fan card is also revoked and now has an enchantment on it. Whosoever gets basic facts right about a character they swear they're a fan of, shall be worthy of the power of V's patron, whatever that is.

Let me pull up page two of this very thread:

Edit: In case any of you might've not played the original. SMT:3 had no dubbing of any kind. The voice actor for Dante this time around is Toshiyuki Morikawa, again, the same actor as the anime.

So there is no "Matt Kaminski voiced Dante in the original release". He just voiced Dante in 2. They reused his battle grunts in SMT3, but there was no dub for voiced lines because no one had voiced lines. And he didn't reprise any role for VJ; that was Drew too. That voice is backwards. It doesn't even sound like Matt! What the f#ck, you guys. Do you not have Google?

Anyway, went and listened to the clip. Reuben sounds atrocious as that Dante. I'll restate what I said before:

If there was ever a time to bring back Drew Coombs or Matt Kaminsky, I'd say this is it. No offense to Reuben either, but there's a reason he once said that he had to audition for DMC4's Dante even though that Dante (and Reuben at the time?) were both men in their 30s. He's too closely associated with modern Dante and the kind of laid-back "want a good time" personality, and when he voiced 1!Dante in the anime he straight up sounded more depressed than anything. I'd personally favor Drew. He can at least do righteous anger.

They've changed his dialogue in the game to fit the Reuben-Dante personality better. I'd say that's horrid work.

And FFS, he somehow keeps exhaling on the last word like he was holding his breath the whole time. I can't unhear it and it's annoying. Since 4 (or even earlier, in the anime, I CBA to relisten to that), he's consistently voiced Dante like he's either out of breath or about to laugh at something offscreen. He doesn't talk like that in DMC3. Vergil didn't sound like that in 5 and the dude was dying at the beginning.

Langdon is the Forced 60FPS Interpolation of Dante voice work. There, I said it. I'd rather have Ray Chase voice Dante in this game and that dude is playing a cat.
