Devil hunter in training
I don't think I could say if Vergil was good or bad.
I don't think Vergil would see himself as evil. Everything he has done is to live up to the legacy of his father and gain power. To Vergil, that would not be evil, regardless of what he had to do to achieve that. Especially considering what made Vergil want to become like Sparda. He had his mother die and his brother gone, so he's feeling guilty for that happening. Vergil's thinking that if he had been powerful enough, maybe he could have saved his mother and brother.
Like Vergil says: Might controls everything - and without strength, you cannot protect anything; let alone yourself.
The actions that the player would see as evil stem from a need to gain the strength to protect, and he'll do anything for that.
I've seen comments here saying Vergil killing points to him being evil, but Vergil does justify his killing. Arkham...he didn't like the guy anyway. Vergil was only with him because Arkham was useful. But as soon as Arkham showed weakness by not killing Lady, Vergil had no use for him. Besides, it's not like Arkham was good either. He killed his wife and tried to kill his daughter to gain demonic power.
Then there was Beowulf. The demon attacked first, plus I think killing Beowulf was a chance for Vergil to see if he was as powerful as Sparda.
The only thing I can see as 'good' would be when Vergil tells Dante to get out of the demon world before he is trapped....that's it...
