Game of the year? Game of the Year.

Maybe, but games such as "Watch Dogs", "GTA V", or "The Last of Us" can definitely compete with DmC. DmC is hands down "the most talked about game of 2013." I guarantee it will win many awards for it's visual effects, story, and/or combat mechanics.

DmC, for me, is game of the year. The other games listed really don't hold any interest for me. It would just be torture for me if Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 was being released around the same time. Then I'd really have a problem.

Out of all the games that are coming out next year, DmC seems to have the potential for a really high replay value.

GTAV- i've never beat a GTA game! because i never bother playing all the missions

MGR - um, i'll probably try to beat it within a week and send it back for another game

The Last of Us - Unless its exactly like Uncharted's story like, with plenty of surprizes and crazy level designs that are really fun to run around in, maybe. I also don't like playing online anyways.

Bioshock Infinite - ....i don't like shooters, BUT, does look fun....but yea, i hate shooters

The Last Guardian- um.... i wanted to play that game but i think its canceled now

Tomb Raider - Probably Zero replay value

i see it happening for if everyone that was revealed about dmc so far was all that was in the auctual game i probably would not buy it my opinion is there is a lot we are not being told so at the very least itll be MY game of the year

There are rumors that LoS 2 will be release in May 2013. Oh, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is my personal game of the year. Just saying.

Remember: game awards are about popularity, not quality.

In othe words, do we honestly care? Awards shouldn't mean anything. It's companies who want to push the contrary so hard in order to boost sales (ala Oscars).

While DmC is a worthy candidate, it has to go up against Infinite, The Last of Us, GoW and Rising.

But it will probably be my GotY
Atleast somebody still remembers naughty dog :)

I'm not gonna say anything yet, for sure best hack n slash, but GOTY ? Since when did any hack n slasher win GOTY ?
There's also that new Metal Gear with Big Boss.. GTA V... too ...many...good ...games ...my..head..is...gonna ...EXPLODE !!!

If that is when it's released, that means I already have my birthday present planned. lol. My birthday is in April.

I don't know about game of the year, there's some stiff competition next year, with the top contender being metal gear rising. Might win some awards for art, definitely one of the most talked about games of the past few years, let alone just one year.

Story? Wouldn't hold your breath, the storyline in this game is so laughably cliche it's almost ridiculous. But that's kind of always been a standard for devil may cry games, so nobody really cares

? I don't exactly see how this story is cliched besides having to take down a bad guy. I haven't seen a story like DmC's in quite some time. A cliche'd story would be more like, "You are an army soldier go fight terrorists in first person!"

I was out of the loop on the name of a single enemy. But let's see how unbased my criticism of the story is.

So, as a recap, the demons are evil and secretly control the government, corporations, fast food, and the media. They use the government to impose rules, the media to brainwash people, fast food to keep them fat and dumb, and corporations to keep them wound up in greed, feeding the banks, which demons also own. The protagonists belong to an underground group of rebels who commit minor acts of vandalism and hijack TV broadcasts in an attempt to "wake the sheeple", which never works and is always labeled by the (demon controlled) media as "terrorist attacks and conspiracy theorists"

have I missed anything? Because so far this is sounding so cliche, I would almost call it a parody, except it seems to be taking itself very seriously. Award winning story? Unlikely.

"you are a demon hunter go fight demons in third person!"
anything can sound ridiculous when you're willing to be reductive to that level.

I don't see any cliches.
I see some common themes, but that's about it.

the government being controlled is a cliche
the government with a dark agenda is a cliche
the media brainwashing people is a cliche
fast food being out to get people is a cliche
corporations enslaving people with greed is a cliche
"we are anonymous" is a massive cliche, right down to the cliche knockoff guyfawkes mask vergil uses
underground "terrorist group" being the good guys is a cliche

endless cliches. Like I said, game has great art, but don't get your hopes up about this game winning awards for its story

PS - when a "common theme" is repeated to the point where it's too common, that's what "being cliche" means

I think it's easy for us to say it's too predictable a story based on the fact that we have a whole original canon to go from.

But on the face of it, I think it's got a lot going for it. Aside from similarities to the plot of They Live and V for Vendetta, that is sattire on political and social power, there's a rich plot behind the development of the main character himself. Also, aside from how potent the family bonds situation can get when mixed with a crisis situation, there is HOW you tell the story.

A lot of us went into movies like The Dark Knight knowing the essential plot, but the way the story was told is what was important. From that angle, I've seen a lot of interesting details in the character interaction in this game compared to most games. Not to mention that most of the game's plot is still a mystery, so it doesn't make sense to judge it as a whole.

that's a fair point, though it means we can't really tell how it's going to do until the game is out and we see how the story is doing. Ninja theory did a really good job with enslaved and heavenly sword, story wise (not so much combat) so let's hope they can top their performance with the script in this new game and find an awesome way to tell this cliched story

A cliche isn't instantly a bad thing, hard as people try to make it seem like it. These are more tropes than anything.

A cliche is something done so much that it becomes completely tired and boring, and I can only think of a few things that share the same themes used in DmC, and none of it is really all that cliche, just trope-ish.

The only troublesome cliches I've seen so far is
distressed damsel (at least Kat is willing to put herself on the line, we get development with her and she is a BIG character unlike a lot of distressed damsels out there)
evil cooperation (many things have done this, but the look and supernatural touch makes it pretty damn cool)
sibling betrayal (the abel and cain is really overdone but this was unavoidable)

These are commonly used tropes. Now there is no such thing as an original idea. The only way things stay unique is in it's delivery and so far, DmC has delivered something unique. You can in fact tell me where all these ideas come from, but to create something out of it is what makes it special.

Darksiders does the same damn thing and it's not criticized one bit for it because of it's direction. Same goes for DMC1.
