Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition for Next Gen

A lot of fans condemned it out the gate and never gave it a chance whatsoever. Not trying to say anyone has to like it, but you can't say that the stubborn fanboys upset at its freaking existence wasn't a factor here. I still say DmC is underrated by a majority of this fandom. A lot of people, including myself, who have been playing since the beginning still think DmC is a fun entry in the Devil May Cry franchise that can hold its own as the fresh entry in the series while standing with confidence as a Devil May Cry game.

It's you people who always think its some battle here. It's always DMC Vs. DmC with you. IT'S ALL DEVIL MAY CRY. They are part of the same freaking franchise and we all have our things we like and don't like about it.

DMC fans have proven they can be just as bad as Sonic fans. It's been a long time and people STILL just can't get over themselves. Complaining about this stuff like babies who just want everything their way.

And overall, DmC still didn't do terrible. I don't see how that number is really low. Not very exciting, but not low. You keep mentioning DMC 4, and well 2.8 million is not even very exciting either. The games been out for years and it only has that many sales and it also took nearly a month before it shipped a million.

We have games who like earn that amount 4 times over in a single night. I think it goes to show that the Devil May Cry series as a whole has trouble garnering new fans. Even if a hypothetical DMC 5 would release, do you really see it earning that much? It seems like the only people now who care about this franchise are those already familiar with it.

A shame.

Maybe they are a part of the same franchise but it doesn't mean capcom should abandon original series for rebooted series. DMC never needed a reboot, but they made one and they changed the personalities and back stories of main characters.

I'm not a blind fanboy who doesn't want to give DmC a chance. If giving it a chance wouldn't affect the future of the DMC series I would buy the game. But if every DMC fan would give it a chance and buy DmC then most likely capcom would abandon original DMC and would expand rebooted DmC series and I don't want this to happen as I want them to expand original DMC series.

So it is about DMC Vs DmC as we can't have both. This means that in order for capcom to return to the originals we need to boycott the DmC by not buying it at least until they'll make a sequel to original series.

DmC would do much better if it wouldn't be a DmC game. They could as well make a new franchise but for some reason they wanted to make it a DmC game, thus infuriating most of the fans who did not want a reboot.

I'm expecting (key word EXPECTING) more from this than DmC DE is because this is a SPECIAL EDITION. Special Editions tend to be more...SPECIAL.

DE is basically just the same game but looks better and if were lucky plays better but I do have to give Capcom/NT credit the DmC DE looks way better than most remastered/definitive editions as of late. New modes, faster and better gameplay, new original content (costumes, extra cutscenes), added gameplay features, and completely rebalanced gameplay.

Now that is bang for your buck even if you already bought the original. I recommend getting DmC DE if you own a next gen console or want to get one. I actually would get it if my financial situation was a bit better...its complicated.

Now for DMC4 SE....I'm expecting quite a bit for this game.

The Definitive Edition made its case and proposed, like you said, bang for your buck even if you owned a copy of the original. I would never consider getting it if it was just a lazy port. That's how you sell a game. You show people what it has to offer them. And it was already a good title in vanilla form. Eventually I'll probably pick it up when I have a PS4. Might not be right away though.

On the other hand, we just know Vergil having something to do with DMC 4. That's it. And Special Editions tend to be more special? We're talking about Capcom. What was the DMC 3 Special Edition? Vergil playable, but only through the same levels as Dante with some different weapons and boss fights. A few extra boss fights added for Dante. And an extra difficulty mode. And the Bloody Palace. Th game was also fine and dandy in vanilla form and looking back, unless you really wanted to play as Vergil then the DMC 3: SE was something to wait for when it price dropped. I was content with my original DMC 3 copy for a long time before I considered the SE and that was because my copy was stolen.

The major difference is DMC 4 was not a very good game in vanilla form. We already have enough copy and paste so are they just gonnna do that again with Vergil? I hope not. And I know they can't change those insufferable characters, but hopefully we can get some new levels. New bosses like DMC 3. And CUT AWAY some content.

They can at least get rid of that stupid f#cking dice game that popped up multiple times more annoying that the last. That's not lessening the game, that's making it better because those were terrible design choices. A touch up on the camera would also be a nice change possibly some tweaks on the abysmal forced platforming.

I would consider DMC 4 at a bargain price if it just gets rid of and works out some of its glaring issues. If not, Vergil shoehorned in shouldn't be worth anyone's money and you'll have to do a lot of lying to yourself to believe that. And like I said, it would be just sad considering the valiant effort to fix DmC's glaring flaws and adding some new content people were asking for.

Plus, the definitive Edition is only gonna be at launch, I think $30 digitally and $40 physically. It's truly made its case as a Definitive Edition.

If DMC 4 is the same crap with not even half the work DmC has, then I will be sad and disappointed. I can get another copy of DMC 4 at Gamestop for about $7, $4 online if I wanted that again. The Limited Edition at that.

What I hope that Capcom do with this game (DMC4 SE) are as followed:

I do know that mobile DMC4 game actually gave Dante his own levels and added a Nero boss fight for Dante. Granted this is a upscaled PC game on next/current gen so it'll be much harder to create new environmental assets but not too hard they can just reuse various art assets to create new levels and then again various games do throw in like DLC stages and whatever so unless if Capcom is putting in a lot of work and money into this game (not a whole bunch otherwise this might end up being like $60 again although its not really a full game made from scratch and its not like DMC4 had DLC).

So what I want are this to be literally a direct port of the PC version so everything the PC version had and maybe more meaning:

  • Nero and Dante Super Costumes PC versions (meaning automatic Max Exceed and unlimited Calamity gauge but no healing like DmC...hopefully the DmC DE fixed that too)
  • Being able to play Dante in Nero's missions, being able to play Nero in Dante's missions, and same applies to Vergil if he becomes playable
  • Mods. Hey DmC is getting it why not DMC4 especially since it had more interesting mods IMO
  • Turbo mode
  • Better visuals even better than the PC version which does seem to be the case
  • 1080P 60 FPS
  • Most of all LEGENDARY DARK KNIGHT MODE. If they have that I will literally
4852697+_3445f2ad2374a1aedea6b8e8438f05b0.jpg

Also they should be looking in using assets from other DMC4 related material like the mobile game and that one pachislot game. Those include:
  • Better visuals and coloring/more effective use of colors and such. The casino slot game looked F*CKING GORGEOUS. It was bright and full of life and vivid colors (it looked next/current gen) and yeah I know this is DMC and DMC should be all dark and gothic (although DMC4 isn't that) but hey a pretty game is a pretty game.
  • New cinematics if that slot game can have newly made cinematics just for it so can a re-release especially since DMC3 SE did it and DmC DE is getting it.
  • The mobile game had unique levels for Dante so yeah Vergil should get his own levels even if its all set in Fortuna and likewise to Dante.
  • The mobile game had a Nero boss fight for Dante. This shouldn't be hard to implement at all especially since all the assets are there and if they can make a boss character playable in the DMC3 SE (Vergil) they can do the reverse. Plus DMC3 SE added an extra boss fight (Jester).
Now content that the predecessor (DmC) added that this game should have or should've had.

  • A training mode and a better one at that. It was cool DmC added that but it was pretty barebones and simple. I wanted something like Anarchy Reigns where you can customize and alter the settings to include whatever types and waves of enemies you want, the environment you do it in, and enemy AI. But we'll most likely just get what DmC did and get a simple training room and one enemy with unlimited health.
Now what I also want tweaked/added gameplay wise
  • I want to be able to sprint/dash more freely like double tapping forward to start running rather than just wait to pick up speed. So I can pull off some of Nero's moves..well just Rainbow more freely. Like finally I can drop kick an enemy/boss with ease and incorporate that into my combos and that drop kick packs quite a punch. This also applies to Dante even if he doesn't have any dashing/running moves.
  • Some changes to Dante's style based moves like Flipper is now a basic press of the Jump button. Charging should also have an effect on various Gun Slinger moves as well.
  • Dante can dash up to 3 times like he can in DMC3 without the need of DT (optional).
  • Charged Shots are like how they were in DMC3 powerful and explosive not ketchup squirters.
  • Nero's Blue Rose can charge up quicker. It takes too long to reach level 3 IMO.
  • Options to have more frames when trying to pull off Exceed/Max-Act.
  • Also quicker basic Exceed charging time.
  • Altered Holding mechanics for Nero. Instead of having to constantly hold the Buster button to hold on to the enemy perhaps alter how Busting and Holding works like double tapping B/O/Buster button on the enemy will automatically put them in a Hold and just pressing B to release/Buster them.
  • A few moves for Nero perhaps some utilizing Yamato..hell why not just add Yamato as a weapon for him and allow him to switch between it and Red Queen via the unused Trigger button.
  • Dante, Nero, or Vergil should be able to use Quicksilver or slow down/stop time. I mean its actually in DMC4's code to slow down time and you can use it via some item and a stage interaction item. So you can slow down time in the game but having it as a set ability tied to the player character rather than a stage exclusive function would be cool and it'll be easy to implement since the code is all there although (they can just write if input so and so input with so and so conditions then "copy and paste the effect") I'm not sure what language the scripts are in.
  • If Vergil is going to be in the game so they might be reusing DMC3 assets so why not give Dante some of his old weapons like Cerberus, Artemis, AGNI & F*CKING RUDRA, Kalina Ann, etc.
  • New costumes.
  • New enemy types.
  • New bosses.
  • New modes like a Boss Battle Mode (I mean DmC DE is getting new modes and DMC3 SE got Bloody Palace as its new mode even if DMC2 had it first).
  • An alternate Bloody Palace mode (I hate being timed) more akin to DMC3 Bloody Palace mode.

I sincerely hope this thread can be about more than just rehashing the same conversations we've had for the past four years about DmC. Whether you like DmC or not, it's not entirely relevant to what this Special Edition could become on its own.

However, I will say one more thing on that subject- anyone who thinks Capcom could possibly continue both the reboot and the original series is seriously naive. Capcom is having a hard enough time creating new installments for their more popular IPs. We would be lucky to get a continuation of either Devil May Cry, so it's silly to think we could continue both. It would be nothing short of a miracle, and I don't think I'm exaggerating there.

I don't think there's enough information right now to support either one going forward over the other, except perhaps the fact that Ninja Theory is already quite busy on other projects. Also, the amount of ire they got for DmC probably wouldn't be much incentive for them to come back and make another. On the other hand, there's plenty going against the original series, simply due to how long it's been buried.

I think, rather than taking so much time to argue for why one or the other would or should continue, we should all admit that it's a toss-up and take account of what we've already got.

There is no "Maybe". DmC IS part of the Devil May Cry franchise.

An entry in the franchise that's intention was to be different. Something I accepted and still found enjoyment in as a Devil May Cry fan. You can sit and argue all day what you think DmC is. I see it as still a fun entry in the Devil May Cry franchise that isn't as different as fans think, and I'm a player who's been getting stylish since 2001. My favorite most of all is still DMC 1.

No one ever said DMC was completely abandoned. Which is why I still hope for a DMC 5. But the more the merrier. We can get MORE video games and that's just great in general. And its not beyond Capcom to make different variations. MegaMan has the original series, the X series, the Battle Network series, etc. etc. Why not the same for Devil May Cry? It would be exciting!

I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm willing to support both versions because I LIKE BOTH VERSIONS. (*gasp* Is something like that even possible?!) I LIKE DEVIL MAY CRY.

I give both versions some love because I still see what I love about Devil May Cry in them. If that's so hard to figure out, then I don't know what to tell you because it really just does sound like your a blind ,stubborn and extremely biased fanboy.

I can't force you to like something, like what you like. But don't just act like the people who do like DmC don't know what they're talking about when they do say they do dig it. I have reasons to back up why and I've stated them plenty of times on this forum in the past. And like I said, I'm a hardcore Devil May Cry player that's been playing since the beginning. I'm not just some special breed of fan either. There's a lot of people who enjoy this new version more than you think. Quit thinking people who enjoy both either have to be with you or against you just because you like one version more. Because in the end, we're all fans of Devil May Cry.

Quit being so caught up in yourself and see that.

Well DMC3 SE had like a couple months of development time and was released just a year after DMC3 came out so they had like 6 months at best to work on the game.

This is a Special Edition for a game that is 7 years old and they've been working on it for some time now as its been reported and they still have like 6 more months til its release.

Plus like you said this is Capcom and looking at their SF re-releases and re-re-release and re-re-re-releases or better yet Arcade Edition or SUPER DUPER MONEY BAGS ULTRA MEGA JIZZ TASTIC GIVE ME MORE MONEY EDITION they can and do add a lot of extra content (more new playable characters, gameplay tweaks, new stages, etc) to their "Special Edition" games. Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen is a good example of that.

We don't know any details about this game at all so might as well shut up until more details are announced.

Plus DMC4 SE has Japanese voice acting now. That is one thing you missed.

And ok, let's remember this when we do get more information. If the DMC: SE really isn't much of an improvement after all this time, then that's even more sad. I'm willing to be cautiously optimistic, but I won't hold my breath knowing Capcom. I say you do the same. Then you won't be so p!ssed if it does let you down.

Because look what happened to MegaMan. The fanbase literally split apart. No diehard classic or X fan would ever touch the BN, SF, or even Legends or Zero/ZX series and the vice versa and the series literally went downhill when it came to popularity and sales. The fact that MegaMan 2 (the SECOND MEGAMAN GAME IN THE ENTIRE FRANCHISES HISTORY) is the highest selling game in a franchise that went on for over 2 decades says something about how great of a decision that was granted I still love all the MegaMan series.

Plus with Capcom's financial situation I doubt they can afford to pump out 2 Devil May Crys at once or in tandem when they have A. MANY MORE IPs that they should also be focusing on and putting funding on 2 DMC games will mean one other game is not getting any support and B. DMC is not a high profile series enough to warrant such attention.

Meaning the divided attention of running 2 DMC series at once will either negatively affect the quality of both or give more attention to the other.

Plus in this age of overly expensive development budgets wearing your fanbase and actually dividing them thin is a very costly decision.

Capcom wants to make money not appease everyone. They only appease people if it to them will make them money.

I don't know what you're talking about when it comes to the MegaMan fanbase. We're all doing fine albeit still missing our guy, but MegaMan was doing fine. Capcom arbitrarily stopped production on MegaMan games. That's it basically.

So if Capcom can put a lot of effort and money into DmC than why not DMC4 the game out of the series sold the most and to this day are still making them more money.

Plus the added extra voice cast and improved visuals (ala better lighting and trust me as a Game Design major is expensive) as well as the possibility of a new playable character is evident that they're sinking a lot of effort into this game as well.

Plus its not like DMC3 SE could've added a whole extra stuff into it considering the hardware they had at the time as well as time and later Capcom games in the past generation of consoles show they can add tons of new content to special edition like Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen, a game Itsuno made and didn't sell that well either, that added new mechanics, new areas, new enemies, new bosses, tweaked and fixed a lot of the game's problems, and etc.

They just announced it and want us to wait for further details and like you know what that mean you wait for more news. They literally is keeping details of DMC4 secret for now for they don't want to shy focus away from DmC.

Plus this is no different than announcing a new DMC/DmC title with little details. So what if that happened you'll just expect either games to suck because you don't know nothing about it.

Stop being such blinded arrogant pr*ck.

The facts are straight in your face.

Each Starforce installment kept selling worst and worst with each title, the Zero and ZX series weren't money makers either despite how cheap they were to made and I've been to the Capcom Unity forums and was a diehard MegaMan fan and I did see fans were divided. Especially when MegaMan 9 and 10 rolled out and people started arguing over which was a better direction to take the series.

No it was not doing fine. It only had 4 games in the entry that sold over 1 million unit. It only sold well and was doing well at the time because was putting out so much MegaMan games at once. We'd get 2 MegaMan games a year for every year until they stopped because they weren't selling and game costs were rising. THEY MADE 120 MEGAMAN GAMES.

Face the facts this was a series that was milked from the start and they stopped because they couldn't milk it anymore. My main gripe with Capcom was not the fact they stopped making them but the fact they cancelled some games mainly Legends 3 if they had just released Legends 3 and a few other canned games and THEN stopped making MegaMan games I would be 100% fine or 90% fine.

People only started to care because they stopped making them.

Legends 3 probably would've sold well but that is due to the fact Legends 3 was the highest of demand in the MegaMan series.

You and some other people don't equate to the majority.

The whole gamer entitlement applys to a bunch of gamers. Especially this fanbase. The splits happen because fandoms can be fandumbs. It's not the developers fault, it's the fans.

And I cared not when MegaMan stopped coming out, it was because they stopped. Because I care about the little guy enjoyed the different variations. To be honest, I wished that MegaMan FPS would have got off the ground because it sounded promising. Being made by the same people who did Metroid Prime. And Metroid Prime was effing fantastic. I could live without Legends 3 personally.

Ah well, we have Mighty No. 9 on the way where I can get my MegaMan fix.

Back on topic, we'll see if DMC 4 actually improves. There's a lot of work to be done, but I don't expect much from Capcom anymore. We'll wait and see.

I wonder...naw they wouldn't...would they?

I'm thinking that what if Capcom KNOWS DMC4 is their highest selling game and because of that for their SE of DMC4, they'll barely put any work into it and will focus more on DmC: DE because maybe they believe that fans will take anything with "DMC4" and "Vergil" on it. What if they've just gotten so cocky that they think because DMC4 was at its best already that they won't need to do much with it except just add animations from DMC3 to DMC4's Vergil, pretty the slashes up, and that's all?

Guys...really, guys? Must every thread degenerate into a DmC vs DMC/you-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about/name calling thing? Can't we just be nice and stay on topic? Please? The mods have already said stuff in this thread before....

---

So, I've been giving this some more thought (other than fangirlisms), and I wonder if Vergil will have a mini-story like Vergil's Downfall in DmC. But, you know, instead of going into hell, it's him coming back from it? And, y'know, hopefully kicking Nero's butt to get Yamato back, because I would love to see that fight... And maybe he could be just as much a threat to himself as other demons would be? (Psychologically, I mean; not running around punching himself or throwing himself off ledges...that's my job. >_>) Would be interesting to see some depth to him besides what we see in DMC3 and what people give him in fanfiction. Would also be interesting to see him be reunited with his brother, though something tells me that wouldn't end well.... >_>

An interesting side note: after the trailer, I've seen many on my friend list on Steam buying DMC4 again (those who only had the Games for Windows copy, and lost it, or broke it).
If this is an indication of the general reaction for that trailer, I got a good feeling about DMC's future... ;)

Really? boycott? What is this 2010 again?
I agree that it's somewhat childish (not trying to offend anyone) to boycott a game unless it's got something against your morals or something in it. I reckon some people that think DmC: DE looks good will boycott it thinking they'll get a DMC5 for doing so when in reality they'll miss a fun game.

On topic though, if they give Nero a new melee weapon and perhaps remove the second dice game and have a straight up boss rush then I'll be satisfied. Right now I'm merely expecting them to add Vergil with his DMC3 move set... Prove me wrong Capcom!

Why does everyone bash the Dice Game? It was a neat gimmick for TWO damn stages, what's the problem? You could even cheat basically! I thought the die itself looked hella sweet imo, and the second time it ensured that DMC4's Classic Capcom Boss Rush was unique from 1-3's. Heck, DMC's had gambling motifs sprinkled throughout the whole series, playing with an obscure looking die isn't god-awful to do.

Anyway, yeah, I really liked DmC too, so I'm afraid I can't play a role in the DmC2 vs DMC5 war, unless you want me to buy DmCdE once and DMC4:SE twice?

The first dice game was fine but with the second one it was possible to overshoot and start the whole process again making it stupidly frustrating. It also felt like padding and when something feels like padding then it has been done wrong. Perhaps if they'd put an option in to remove the dice and just walk through to the boss fight for those that don't want it and let those who want it keep it. It may have been unique but it's also pointless... If you watch the Zero Punctuation review of DMC4 that explains how a lot of fans feel about the dice game.

On another note, I'm glad to see that someone else who is impartial to the ridiculous DMC v DmC thing. I hope all that blows over soon!
