The hatred expressed towards DmC is going to differ from person to person.

"Why the hate?". There is no single specific answer to that question. Instead more like a compilation of reasons. From what I have heard these reasons are pretty varied. And they range from the perspectives of some who just simply hate it (for being different, for changing Dante and the feel of the game) to much more analysed points that go into further points of dislike.

Hate is a strong word. And a lot of people here don't hate it as such. They dislike a lot of things it incorporates. And they aren't exactly interested in the game.

The majority that hate it because they just don't like Ninja Theory, or they think DmC Dante is lame because he's clearly 'gay' or 'emo', are kind of disrespectful and ignorant. You should always be willing to be open minded and give whichever game developer a chance. Because you may not enjoy a particular company's work, but you should at least give them a chance. Especially when Capcom went to Ninja Theory. So in fairness, you'd have to share your disapproval with both NT and Capcom. Plus calling DmC Dante names like gay and emo is a very offensive thing to do. Throwing the word gay around like it's an insult is shameful, because it isn't one. The word is more of a word used to categorise a person's sexual orientation. And not a word to be used to downgrade something. The same goes for emo. The word is used to put a type of person with specific traits into a category. People are very often referenced to what 'category' other people think they belong in. But to assume that all types of people in a specific group are the same is extremely judgemental and offensive.

That goes to say that with most things there is mindless hate for something and there is hatred of certain aspects of something and everything else inbetween.

The game has been produced regardless. And in my opinion, although it wasn't what I wanted (I would of prefered a continuation of DMC) there are still those that prefer DmC. And there are those that didn't think the reboot was a good idea. It wasn't greatly welcomed or appreciated. But the thing for me is that DmC should be viewed as a game that was made to not only take DMC in a new direction or to make the storyline better or to just generally try to put a different spin on it from a different game developers point of view. I see DmC as being a way for Capcom to keep the original franchise more alive. DmC has got people talking. It has brought a lot of new members to the Community. It has generated a lot of buzz. And in a way it has helped to preserve people's interests in Devil May Cry.

Love it or hate it. It has created something that in a way is somewhat positive to the series. And I think that point has been a little overlooked.

But isn't that the point of a re-imagining?

Yeah, it was a re-imagining when it didn't need to be, but turning him into something he isn't in a reboot is to be expected.
more to the point on this, fans had been waiting for like 6 years with absolutely no word of another devil may cry game, on the verge of giving up hope after DMC4 was reviewed so critically over its rushed completion and criminal stage recycling. Then suddenly there's another game, only it's not, it's some other game made for some other fans. 6 years is a long time to build up hope and expectations, and it's pretty rough after all that time to hear that the company that owns your favorite series thinks your fanbase isn't worth it any more.

For more context, this is capcom. They have a history of taking a series that is loved for how amazingly well they cater to some niche group, and then destroying that niche in favor of a broader audience. Resident evil has turned into some sort of action shooter, we're up to 6 games now with no signs of even thinking about RE1 or 2. Classic megaman is gone, his creator left the company to work on an indie project and capcom canceled megaman legends because "fans weren't interested" which is the biggest load ever, and they even attempted a reboot of bionic commando which was pretty awful.

TL;DR capcom has a history of dramatically changing the original direction of a series because the fanbase is too narrow, and for all the talk that DmC is just an AU, there's never been a case where capcom has completely rewritten a series and then still gone on to continue (or even acknowledge) the original style. That's why people are worried and angry; all signs point to DmC being the way all devil may cry games will play now, based on capcom's history. I really hope I'm wrong about that

They only had to wait 2 years.

DmC was announced in 2010.

****, you're right. Sorry, for some reason I was thinking DMC4 released in 2005, but that was DMC3. Yes you're right, not nearly as long as I said, but still, I don't see capcom going back to the old formula given their past history of doing exactly this sort of thing

So wait. Everyone's cool with Mighty No. 9 presumably taking over Megaman's fanbase?

Because if you think about it. Wouldn't Mighty No.9 be a Megaman reboot in an alternate universe?

mighty no. 9 is a reboot of megaman in the same that that bayonetta is a reboot of devil may cry.
(which is to say not)

Lord Dante

Forever waiting.
My dislike for DmC not only comes from the changes in characters and dumbed down combat, but also at how disrespectful Tameem and NT was to the original Dante.

If it's a reimagining, why not call it that instead of a "reboot".

Because being super sensitive about something you shouldn't be sensitive about at all is all the rage nowadays.

I mean, it's not like something that insults your sexuality is a priority over this right?

Look at that. There you go again making someone look like they're an idiot.

Sensitive? So now we're talking about feelings? If they wanted people to respect the reboot, then there was no need for all that drama.
