Your post captures everything I despise in this business.
Mostly its the DLC, Day One patches, and pre-order idiocy that I hate having to put up with. Back before DLC, there were simply special editions of games that were popular enough for a physical re-release.
If games moved on to compacted cartridges like the vita, then I wouldn't worry about the game burning itself out like a disc would. Even a blu-ray has a lesser lifespan than a cartridge.
Cartridges, memory cards, and replaceable hard drives are the way to go -- but now, everything needs to be tied into an account.
If streaming services like Playstation Now take off, then I'll have no choice but to resort to Plan B -- I won't say what that is here.
Nothing is really ours anymore -- we're just given permission to play it.
