Like I said to Chancey, that's not my point. I just think it's lazy and lame to put one word into the game five or six times, to make the game 'cooler'. Dante writing 'f*ck you' on a guest list is not clever or funny, but NT seems to think it is. Anything would've been better. I would probably enjoy seeing Dante take a magic marker and write his name on the bouncer's face after he punched him. Or if he could find out the bouncer's name, to cross off the bouncer's name. That would sort of be funny - almost like he went Jigglypuff on him. Would be fun if he parodied what Jigglypuff did, too.
They didn't do it "to make the game cooler!" F#cking
at all! Get that through your head, dude. Jesus H. Tap-dancing
Christ. You're making grand assumptions about the game and then criticizing it for them. And that stupid bit about how he should write on the bouncer's face? That's incredibly retarded, because it clashes so much with his established personality.
Dude says he's not on the list? He punches him out, writes something down on said list. "F#ck you" for telling me I'm not on the list like a smug prick.
Dante is clever and has no time for people's sh!t, what he did is perfectly fine with who he is.
I'm honestly beginning to think you have no understanding of what okay writing might be. DmC is not some literary masterpiece, but it certainly isn't some B-movie schlock. You know how many incredible stories use expletives
consistently?
MANY. Why? Because the writers aren't afraid to use words that are legitimately authentic, and didn't compromise the integrity of the story for the sake of not hurting someone's virgin ears. It's not "lazy" to use a word that people out in the world legitimately use.
And hell, I dunno if you know this, but lots of cities have large groups of people who swear freely. It's even more apparent in the UK because they have less stringent rules of swearing even on TV.
Goddamn, did you have a problem with Grand Theft Auto V's incessant use of "nigga" too? I hated it, but damn is it accurate if you've ever been anywhere near people and places like that in the States, and I respect the writing for being authentic.
Let's also remember that "F#ck" makes up a whopping like 3% of all the dialogue in the game, and sometimes it's used emphatically (which many people do, myself included). You're literally bitching about an infinitesimal sum that makes up the whole.
Well, I think they could've made Dante not only cool in what he does, his views and what he has gone through, but also cool in how he speaks and moves and so forth. So I'd say your argument is invalid. I can see past how annoying he is, but that doesn't mean I should like him for how he acts. To me, NT Dante is a stupid-sounding ass who thinks he's awesome. Even if he had all the best intentions in the world (or a horrible past), it would not make me like his crappy personality. That's not short-sighted, that's just me wanting a likable character in personality as well as standpoints and actions.
What? No my argument is not invalid. You can't accept what's there, and can't even accept how he's supposed to be. It's not Ninja Theory's fault that Dante doesn't live up to the image you have in
your own head. That's your goddamn fault.
If they did try to that, then everyone would simply think he's a "try hard" again. They still
do because they believe whole-heartedly that it was something that was written into his character, when it was not an aim to write him as actually "trying to be" anything. He's a dude who just wants to live a pleasureful life while constantly being hassled by demons. He's gained himself an sardonic attitude to make up for how sh!tty his life is at times.
I'm going to be completely honest right now, and I say this as a guy who
loves Devil May Cry as a whole - the classic Dante is a try-hard. I think people have just been so blinded by the slapdash writing the series has had to actually see it.
Now now, unclench your sphincters while I explain. Devil May Cry had its roots in what equates to B-movie action stuff. The silliness of most of it was what make it so fun. Dante himself, he does cool stuff, but he's also a gigantic dork for all the lame lines and dumb puns he makes. He actually undercuts his own coolness with his inane chatter. But that's okay! Dante is a fun-loving guy, and it worked well for the classics because we all just wanted to have fun.
DmC is
different (the entire point, mind you), and instead of just being okay with the B-movie dorky hero that was the fun-lovin' classic Dante, they made a character who would actually have visible depth, and seem like an actual person that people could relate to on some level - the classic became exceedingly unrelatable on any deep level as the series went on.
Neither Dante is bad. Lemme say that again -
NEITHER DANTE IS BAD. They fulfill different roles for games with different narrative tones. The classics are a zany romp of demon killing fun and fighting evil, while the Ninjaverse is about a more serious struggle in an oppressed world. The versions of Dante in each fit perfectly with the setting they exist in.
Much in the same way Tameem once said classic Dante wouldn't fit in DmC's setting (laughed out of a common bar), the same could be said for DmC Dante not quite fitting in with the classic's setting.
