Sparda was part of the backstory of the DMC games. Of course you can ruin that. You can ruin anything that produces emotion in people. Who says Sparda had to be a character that existed in the games' plots? Your point is not valid.
Oh really? Then tell me exactly what Sparda contributes to the DMC franchise other than a BS explanation for anything that happens in the plot? They always revolved the characters around Sparda and his family tree and it does not benefit the game because it just makes the entire game and world feel small.
It's lazy and shorthand storytelling. Like I said, he was never much a character, he was a goddamn plot device. Seriously, like I said before, these rose tinted glasses some of you wear for the originals are practically blindfolds.
And don't go on and accuse me of only liking DmC. I'm like, the only mofo who still has love for the very first game the most it seems. I'm just able to see that yea, the characters and plots were always pretty poop ok. I'm a stickler for storytelling.
One major observation I've made about the whole thing is that when it comes down to the fanbase, a large majority are more fans of 3 and 4 and it's very anime approach to how it presents itself.

I just hate the whole "I'm a true fan of DMC, so I hate this game" people.
Some people said the same about Hitman: Absolution.

That said, if they put the emphasis on the word 'DMC', I can get where they're coming from. I don't see DmC as a Devil May Cry game. Just because it bears the same name doesn't mean it's spiritually the same. DmC is not even part of the same series, it's part of the same franchise. Just because it bears the same name doesn't mean it should automatically get my respect. Same with Final Fantasy XIII. As a Final Fantasy, I don't like it. But as an RPG, it could be worse.

Maybe you're just referring to the actual hate that went around. Maybe you're referring to the actual haters, not to the well-reasoned points people have provided here. But honestly, your comment sounds willfully ignorant. You can hate something for good reasons. Hate is a perfectly normal, acceptable thing. It's part of human nature. Now, 'haters' and 'hating' (which imply active deprecating just for the reason of disliking something) is a different issue.

Not really... it shows an insight as to how he lives his daily life and referring back to DMC 3 it doesn't seem to me like he doesn't have family or friends they're just not shown,only vergil seems like a loner to me.
I just picture him like a Saturday night cartoon superhero he's not that deep or realistic.
Neither does it tell that he inherited sparda's money or even had any contact with him whatsoever remember he was separated from his mother when he was young and he even went by the alias of "tony redgrave".

"Same" and "Similar" are different things.. i only meant to say that DmC dante hearkens back more towards the original dante's character by being all tryhard and non-nonchalant.
Character development was never a strong suit of devil may cry series TBH in fact dante's character is so inconsistent with every game.
Sparda was the legendary dark knight. He defended the humans from demons, and ruled over the human world for hundreds of years, IIRC. I'd say that makes him much more memorable than any real-life president nowadays. He didn't just secretly save the world like Dante did. Maybe the humans have forgotten some of the things he did (as with any real-life king), but that doesn't mean nobody *remembers* Sparda.
Why would Dante need to have contact with Sparda to inherit his money? Sparda would've kept his money somewhere, maybe even in a bank account, since he died in a modern time. If Sparda left Dante his money in his will, that explains how he could buy a whole building and start a shop. At this point, we're both just making stuff up, but I find the above to be more likely.
I can agree with some of your points, but I can't keep debating this. I'm going to take a short break from the site too. So I'm going to have to disagree with some of it and leave it at that.
Besides, this isn't even relevant to this thread. We should've moved this subdebate somewhere else. I have no issues with DmC Dante being different from the other Dantes, if anyone is wondering that. I mean, each Dante has been different from the next. I have no real problem with any of them.

But nobody really has any patience for the question: why make deadpool the punisher? Why not just make two different characters? They both have strong fanbases, both with pretty different tastes in what they like in an action hero. So why does one need to stop existing so the other one can take his name and his place?
Classic dante (all versions, even DMC1 dante) was loved as a character, there were seriously huge followings of people who worshipped dante but didn't even play the game. Now replace that character with the exact opposite of everything he stood for, and then make fun of that fanbase for ever liking him in the first place.
If this game was the heavenly sword sequel tameem so desperately wanted it to be, it wouldn't have gotten a fraction of the hate.

While DmC had its own merits both as a story and a game, it wasn't enough of a splash to justify all the 4 years of arguing and expectations so i think a lot of the hatred that existed after was just disappointment at the final product as it doesn't feel worth the heartache.
Well before the game came out, its a mix of the trailer making a bad first impression and Capcom/NT not being able to quell it. Instead of it feeling like the Dark knight, people saw it as m. Night shamaylan's the Last airbender or Dragonball Evolution.

It's absolutely crazy you say that, because I've always gotten an M. Night Shyamalan feel from DmC but I've never been able to put my finger on why that is.
Can't believe someone else made the connection, since I'm not even sure why I made the connection. It might be the whole Last Airbender thing, but I've never really watched more than the trailer for the movie and I've only watched a tiny bit of the show.
its closer to Dragonball evolution tho since it made these changes that went too far to some. It wasnt a bad idea to angle it towards a western/modern audience, just not sure this was a good way to go about it.

1. DmC is an alternate universe and is made differently than DMC on purpose.
2. DmC is not meant to replace DMC, it is meant to co-exist beside it. This is Capcom complimenting DMC's lore and giving us fans WHAT? More Devil May Cry.
3. DmC Dante is in his teenage years in a logically rebellious phase given his history and situation. DMC Dante was all over the place and you couldn't quite get a grip on who he really is. So everyone just favored one version over the other. I say versions because, well, they're so different personality wise that people just pick and choose which one they like.
Facts about Kam:
1. States that Ninja Theory placing DMC Dante next to Brokeback Mountain characters means he's associated with homosexuals and therefore is being called gay. "Gay" is used, in Kam's own words, as insulting this fictional character because Kam's so sure Dante isn't "gay" given the hints that he likes women...but there are no hints that he doesn't like men as well. Hm.
2. Kam believes Tameem wants Heavenly Sword 2.
3. Kam believes someone disagreed with him because he's proven to hate homosexuals.

The first novel (I think you can still find the scans on tumblr), manga that works as prequel to DMC3 and anime (in the episode with prison you can see that Morrison cares about Dante, though acts like he doesn't).
