Read volume 1 of Devils and Realist by Madoka Takadono and Utako Yukihiro. I'll be honest, I bought it cuz a lot of the reviewers were comparing it to Black Butler and quite a few people said it was better than BB. And...um...well, the mythology is interesting, but the characters aren't as appealing as BB's. I expect demons to either be suave, enticing you into sin, or scary as all get out. These demons are...neither, really. See, the premise is that the main character, William, is supposed to be one of the electors for the next king of hell. The main demon kinda comes off as a scary infomercial host, another one is kinda a bi-polar perv (which is amusing), and the third is...tbh, kinda pathetic. And I can't really get into William's character because there's really no one to bounce his self-importance off of in a way that makes it less grating. I mean, don't get me wrong, the story's interesting, I just don't like the characters. Yet.
Also just finished reading Bloodlines by Simone King. I picked it up because I really enjoy the author's fanfiction, that said, it was also really hard to read without comparing it to the fanfics. Not that the book itself was hard to read, mind you. The plot starts off slow and picks up around the second half of the book, and, really, the way it ends makes me feel like there was a whole 'nother book that was supposed to be added to it. (*shakes author* It's been two years, gimme your sequel, woman!) Now, I'll be honest here, I thought that the book needed more over all action to it and more explaining. The book is exactly 350 pages long and...well, there's no real major fights until the final one...which is in the last 50 pages. :/ For a world focused on magic and that's in a state of constant conflict, I expected more. And the world itself is another thing that kinda confused me: totally new setting, not at all related to our world, and yet...no real explanations about it. The reader is thrown headfirst into plot and expected to take it all in without drowning in it and...well, it took me three days to get past the first 50 pages. However, it only took me 12hrs to finish the rest of the book, which sorta speaks for itself. The characters were entertaining and had great chemistry. Even though I saw one of the biggest plot twists in the story coming a mile off, I still found myself hoping I was wrong for the sake of that character. I'm very anxious to see how the story will play out, if certain people will resolve their issues and if the resistance will win. Judging by the author's fanfics usually having bittersweet endings, though, I'm expecting lots of death and feels before the end of the series. *also curious to see how some of the sub plots will end*
(Also, I believe this book is self-published by the author, so there are spelling mistakes and grammatical issues. Not very many, but some. You don't really focus on them after a while, though.)
