Stop telling people what to do/believe

Hey, guys. I don't visit this site that often anymore, but there's some things I have to get off my chest.

Stop telling people to stop spreading hate or whatever. We all have freedom of speech, and if you don't want to listen to what somebody has to say, then don't read it and/or don't reply. There's no need to have moderators come in. I'd almost say it's not necessary to have moderators. We take responsibility for our comments, and we don't lock a thread because ''oooh, it's getting hairy''. And so what if it is? Just accept that being human includes the nasty bits. We're adults; we don't need some motherly figure hovering above us locking threads because we're supposed to play nice in order to protect the soft spots on our heads. This is in response to the Dante's wig joke discussion of about half a week ago.

I will say this, though: if you've got something to say, think long and hard about what it's going to be. Make sure it at least has something to do with the topic. Make sure it isn't solely based on your emotions, because chances are... other people will have other emotions! :O Want to insult people? I guess you can, as long as it's based on something. I'm sure it'll die out if it gets out of hand and somehow strays away from the subject. Locking threads is only going to spoil it for the people who want to have conversations instead of mindlessly assholing around.

people have the right to express their opinion, but other people then have the right to express their opinion of that opinion. and the fact that the mods have things to do proves that we need them. locking threads is something that is done when the thread has no chance of getting back on topic and is just going to create hurt feelings that will cause problems for the rest of the forum. oh and not everyone here is an adult and even being an adult doesn't automatically mean being mature.

Nobody should have to be insulted. And there shouldn't be any mindlessly assholing around neither. But sadly people have done it and we've all lost our temper at one stage or another, even me.

As for freedom of speech, it often goes out out the window with this fandom because sadly it gets used as an excuse to act out without maturity, and to talk to people with no respect. Though maturity isn't defined by age, anybody can be mature if they want to, even the youngest of us.

So telling people that it's not right to tell others not to hate, that's only half the glass filled. You need the other half settled as well. :( I know you mean well, but it's the truth. However you are right, about not listening to what someone is saying or bother replying if it'll only cause a storm. It's the best thing to do than get in the fight. You're heart's in the right place.

Not to be the guy who always disagrees with everyone, but I seriously haven't seen any threads on this site that ended in just a lot of cursing or whatever. It always had something to do with something they were discussing. And they kept on discussing it. So what if it gets a bit nasty eventually? That'll soon die out. It always does, however long it may take.

True, but then, if somebody doesn't have respect for you, he/she should be able to voice that. I personally don't care if somebody who is wrong about something doesn't have respect for me. Why? Because if I defend a standpoint, I feel I'm right and the other is wrong, unless proven otherwise. People usually start acting 'immature' because one party does not explain their views logically or finds itself 'right' and the other 'wrong' for purely emotional reasons. Then, when they're asked to explain, they respond unkindly for no good reason, and that causes the other party to respond unkindly, and so on.

So that's what I'm saying: don't mix up emotions with facts and logic. One example of that mistake (sorry, Chancey, but I have to make a point) is Chancey, who kept saying DMC4 Dante is a bad character simply because he doesn't like him. Again, emotions. It's like bringing a glitched almighty throwing knife to a throwing knife-only match in Modern Warfare, if you know what I mean. It's just not the same playing field, it's not fair and it doesn't even make sense. Not that I play MW online - the last COD I played was COD2, I think. Oh, and maybe MW2 online for like a few hours.

Almost sounds like you want to see a war.

This is a forum we're talking about, right? It's words. Like I said, it'll soon die out, and if there's a 'right side', eventually there will be someone who proves they're right by delivering an infallible argument. That would be great to see. Everybody would actually learn a lesson then, instead of getting closed threads before anyone's said anything. Sadly, that's the problem: oftentimes there isn't a right side, because people start arguing over purely emotional things - which you should not do!

In this case, freedom of speech is something you shouldn't want to stifle. In this case, the most harm it'll do is hurt people's feelings, but maybe that's a good thing sometimes. If you're wrong, maybe it's good too see that you're wrong.

Or maybe I've just had too many mars bars and soda :P Anyway, closing threads usually doesn't do much good.

All I have to say is, if you must disagree with someone, try not to be a a$$hole about it.

If your hating the hate that is being spread around then simply convey that opinion in a mature way and move along.

If that person who you think is spreading hate continues to do so then add him to your ignore list, its there for a reason.

Its not until it crosses the line of insults that disagreeing and voicing your opinion takes a wrong turn and needs to be addressed (Hopefully by staff members).

i personally didn't see that particular thread as insulting or getting too out of hand. to be honest, i thought it was going to after a few replies, but then i saw the discussions people were having. and it seemed pretty tame compared to some of the other threads i've been on. oh well. i guess that comes with the price of having free speech. sometimes you will get locked down.

You know, I guess if people are going to get offended and will offend, maybe there's going to be people who won't just get over it. And that's deleterious to the forums. So I guess maybe it's best not to resort to namecalling, cursing and whatnot, because it might make it harder for people to have discussions and conversations in the future. So yeah, I see your point.

Still, I just want to say that it's no use to tell people to shut up, do this, stop flaming, etc. We all have the right to say what we want to, and so, we'll say it. And yes, I see the irony in this thread's title - the one I thought of. :P
So I'm exercising my right to tell you that it's no use getting emotional and telling people to shut up, do this or whatever. So yeah, I am... advising you not to mix up emotions and opinions with facts and such. There. If it gets out of hand, I'd suggest letting the moderator get some healing words in before closing the thread, though, because just closing it abruptly always seems to only temporarily fix the problem.

And now, I am going to do something else :P
