Should there be a limit to the fanservice?

Finally somebody else says it besides me! Balanced roster>80% oversexualized roster. It's just my preference, I can't speak for everyone.
The unbalanced roster, the lack of extra modes, and the atrocious amount of emphasis on DLC costumes and Character Creation mode is what 99.9% of the SoulCalibur fanbase was complaining about. Trust me: you aren't alone.

Anyway, did any of yall see this topic yet?

For me, I'm sorta in between about it. While I commend the team for stepping up and showing that DoA is more than just boobs and yaoi(god, I hate that), I also think they're overdoing it. In a fighting game tournament, nobody gets offended by almost everything, so the censorship is pointless.
As long as the gameplay and modes are up to previous DoA standards (in every way SoulCalibur V was LACKING), then I don't care what kind of fan-service they include. The emphasis is on the gameplay, where it should be....the fan-service, while prominent, is still secondary to the actual game.

The only game that put the fan-service first and the gameplay second was Xtreme Volleyball, because all the mini-games and volley-ball mechanics in that game were absolute sh!t...slapped together around a game where the emphasis was on the outfits and the photo mode.

The term hasn't evolved with the movement. But that's why feminism is called what it is. Hope that helps dispel any sketchiness.
Hmm.. doesn't that technically mean that feminism movement has already reached its goal and is no longer necessary considering how women in america have equal rights? something like feminism seems more relevant in Afghanistan than in America&the west in general.

Feminism literally means the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. So no. Feminism hasn't reached its goal. And quite frankly, I'm tired of having to educate people on something that is one Google search away. So here:

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=modern day feminist issues

Modern day feminism has also evolved to include civil rights, LGBT rights, etc. So you can add all of that onto why feminism still matters.

What an odd way of going at it. So feminism also includes civil and homosexual rights but the name is not all inclusive. If any of them should be all encompassing it should be civil rights. Feminism's name indicates the rights of women, I wouldn't associate it with my rights as a latino nor those of of my gay brother on the merit of the name alone.

By the way, hasn't this gotten far too out of topic.

Well in the west women are equal to men..
The "Modern" Feminist movement seems like one of those "first world problems" to me nothing but bunch of self-entitled people whining about trivial issues while ignoring the serious ones..it wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't infiltrate the gaming community!

It all depends on the country and which part of internet you hang out. Here we recently had a huge action where feminist groups pointed out decades long abuse women receive in hospitals during and immediately after childbirth, mostly from nurses and midwives.
When I went to places like tumblr, it was mostly about how women are portrayed in media, fat is beautiful, video game characters should not be forced to wear skimpy outfits because they can't speak out against it (even Quiet, who wears it for non-sexual reason and who, from what I heard, will actually have to face catcalling for it, and possibly educate players on the issue), how a bad experience with someone who clearly fails at human interaction means men in general are like that, and they will mock you if you try to point out that saying "men are..." is prejudiced (I'm sure you've heard of "not all men" issue), etc.

There are two feminisms here - one done by reasonable activists, and one done by misandrists, people in it for self-promotion and young wannabe activists who are actually quite self-centered.

You didn't bother to do any reading did you? :cautious:

I'm bowing out of this conversation. I'm so tired of having to convince people that feminism is still needed. People that can't be bothered to look anything up themselves. I just can't be bothered. If you want to ignore the link I left for you and not bother to do any research yourself, then that's on you. Doesn't make you right; it makes you ignorant. And I can't be bothered.

To be fair feminism is about equality. The crazy manhaters are just a bunch of psychos who try to use the idea of feminism as a cover for their hatred of men.

I agree with this; however, I'm also extremely Darwinist. Survival of the fittest. If men can't handle being criticized at every turn, then they need to be more aggressive themselves.

No one said that either side should take this lying down. They should just leave each other alone.

But, since that won't happen... let there be war. :sneaky:

May the best man -- er -- person, win.

DC utilizing only their Batman and Superman license and not any female heroes to make films is just DC being DC, not sexism or inequality. Very rarely do they ever attempt anything outside of the Caped Crusader or the Man of Steel, because they're afraid of financial failure by digging out other heroes.

But the popularity of the Batman license didn't save Batman & Robin from being a box office bomb, so I don't know what planet DC is inheriting this logic from. Besides, one look at how Marvel has managed to take something as obscure as Guardians of the Galaxy and make THAT a box office success serves as a blatant contradiction to that logic.

Didn't they try to make more money on Catwoman and it bombed?

At the same time toss any stupid romance movie into theaters and women flock to it like crazy.

Maybe this situation ain't so black and white, maybe there would be more female action stars if the audience could guarantee the creators those movies would not be a financial failure. Kinda like a vicious cycle or something.

Granted, if the new Wonderwoman tanks, it will be creators fault. Some promotional image they got out looks cheap and lame, while the promotional image for porn version of Wonderwoman looks just right. Shows how much effort they put in.

I don't think Catwoman bombed at the box office, it just completely sucked as a movie.

Plus, there's no way a Wonder Woman movie will tank. The biggest female superhero ever in her own movie for the first time, it's gonna be a big money maker. I just can't say the quality of the film will be any good since DC has no clue of what the f#ck they're doing and their direction with this cinematic universe is just bad. Especially after the abysmal Man of Steel.

Gal Gadot is not Wonder Woman. Her costume looks terrible too.

>In hollywood you get more Batman reboots more Batman movies than you'll get a SuperGirl reboot or sequel
Is that really a serious issue? shouldn't feminists be more focused on getting girls education in Nigeria or something?
All because of the default belief that an audience rather see a strong leading man instead of a strong leading lady.
That's not female equality, that's total crap.
Well to be fair superhero movies&comics are mostly geared towards male teenagers and young men just like most video games.. the likes the anita and other SJW's don't seem to understand that..

Its like complaining about not enough male protagonists in chick flicks.

They want gender equality & change for the better then praise & encourage the positive side that's already there instead of spending so much time bitching about what you don't like.
This is true. There's a difference between genuine change and complaining about self-created issues that really don't matter.

@VampireWicked

There are plenty of female leads in video games, just not the most advertised titles. Since I mostly play games from small European studios, since those are the only ones that sites with free-for-download games can offer, I lost count how many point&click adventures have female leads that sometimes even rescued their men, and one had a male lead but subverted the trope of damsel in distress in the end. These are all low-budget games from people who are just climbing the ladder, of course.

In my country gaming is still mostly male past-time (though no one except mothers complains if girls play games and buy them). I doubt it's that greatly different in others, maybe just USA where gaming is essential part of culture. It will be different in future, but the fact is that we still see great sales numbers for games like Call of Duty, while stepping out of the fool-proof formula often results with small audience and money losses. And it's hard to gamble when you're expected to make millions worth AAA titles for a spoiled audience.

It's not really a black and white situation, there are so many layers that need to be taken care of. I've seen so many females on internet melt over male characters, while hating female ones just because they are in some way close to the male one. 50 shades of gray has been attacked by feminist groups so badly, yet women went in groups to see it and got angry over critiques. Same thing with Twilight before it. They made fortune to their creators. Hard to make sense out of all this, so it's easier to go the safe money-making route. It's a crappy thing, but in the end even developers and movie makers have to pay bills.

Though may I add that it seems to me Hollywood went rapidly backwards in general? In late 90s world had Xena. 15 years later we see they can't even get a good costume on Wonder Woman, despite larger budget and technological advances. Also, is it me or has it become significantly harder to see an African-American actor play anything but token black friend in sitcoms and drama series? Maybe it's just stuff they send us here.

Anita and likes of her will never focus on the positive, cause they depend on riling up the audience to stay afloat in their business, since in reality they have nothing good to offer themselves.

The gaming industry is still incredibly immature has has a lot of growing pains. Just because there is good female leads, it doesn't mean the ratio between the bad and good are tipped in favor of the good. You'd have to be pretty naive to think gaming has the best handle on representation and sexism. It is a problem that needs some addressing if video games will ever be taken seriously as a legit form of entertainment.

People like Anita Sarkessian however just cherry picks things and is severely uneducated on the subject matter she is trying to represent. She's not the best person to put forward on an issue such as this. Which it's best if people just ignore her and let her collapse under her own ignorance. The scoreboard against someone like her is absolutely pointless.

And stuff like 50 Shades of Gray should just die in a fire and be seen for the garbage it is. Despite being terribly written, it's also severely uneducated on the BDS&M lifestyle depicting just an abusive relationship. Then it has idiots trying to recreate a fetish they absolutely don't understand. Personally p!sses me off. Plus, it's so weird it started as a Twilight fanfiction written by a woman in her 50s.

I feel like the only limits you should have as a creator are the limits you place on yourself so instead of a limit to fan-service maybe a way of balancing it out would be better?

Because my feelings about Team Ninja were that they weren't creatively appealing to me so for them I would say just try to find a different way of standing out and trying some new things differently.

Absolutely

But

In some chases it's the fan service that sells the game.
Look at Dead or Alive, yeah it's a good fighting game, but anyone can tell you from one look at the game, why any normal person would buy this game.
I don't even need to spell it out.
Yes they have cleaned up the game a bit, but still, there's still that hint of fanservice that was there before, heck most games had, and most still do. Personally I think that we need to get beyond this stage in gaming industry, gaming has grown to far to still use CG girls and guys to sell games. And there are many, I mean MANY, games guilty of this. Here are some examples, Final Fantasy, Dead or Alive, Bayonta, DMC, Residant Evil, Meteriod, Tekken, Street Fighter, Halo, MGS, and even Star Fox is guilty of this. Granted that last one is specific for a group of people, but no judgements.
