If it makes you feel better I once contemplated committing suicide for religious reasons (not a cult thing. I was fed up with the way the world was and Christianity believe it or not was making my life stressful).

I once also stopped my nephew from killing himself too because his 3DS broke down (there was other reasons but the 3DS was the final straw for him or something).

Religion can put a stress on people. Sadly, sometimes it can end in suicide. For some, it's a feeling of shame over breaking a commandment, or shame over what the church community will say.
Everyone has moments when the problems and stress of the word really build up and it feels like there's no way out except suicide.
At those times, religion should be a pillar of support of guidance, but I have learned that at times, church can be judgemental and push people even further into suicide. It's a shame.

It can only take one little thing that finally makes a person say 'I've had enough'. It's the culmination of lots of other bad things just suddenly becoming too much.

I convinced him Christian (and most other religions) or not killing yourself will not send you to heaven and I even had to explain to him what hell was...that is when I know his parents and pastor failed him.

I don't think scaring someone using hell when they are fragile and wanting to kill themselves is a good idea. Fine to say, killing yourself is a sin, but also say how much that person would be missed, and how many more experiences in life are still out there, and how things will get better even if it seems really bad at the moment.
Yes, say it is a sin, but put more emphasis on how valued the person is, how the family loves them and would miss them if they died.

Anecdotal, but a friend of mine was brought up with the idea that anything she did wrong would send her to hell. As a result, she is still going to therapy even as an adult to get over this, and does not speak to her parents and accuses them of child abuse for this. Pretty extreme extreme....I didn't know having faith could mess someone up so badly.
