I know that there are the odd occasions where writers can write an OC into the fandom and have the OC not be a self-insert....but you're not going to pull it off if you're writing it in first person narrative. That's as self-insert as you can get, especially if you're going to be writing first person from an OC's point of view.
So all in all, the only advice I'll give you is to take what you know about the rants and vents from anti-DmC fans and use your imagination. I can already see how your story is going to pan out (anti-DmC fan sucked into DmC written by a DmC fan? Right? You are a fan of DmC, aren't you? So in the end it's going to have a 'happy' ending for your OC and the DmC cast and you'll probably get a ****load of flaming reviews from anti-DmC fans...just sayin')
Because this thread is probably not such a good idea considering how raw a lot of people still seem to be about DmC.
And I'd also be careful in what you reply to this as it can go bad very quickly. Actually, just don't reply to my post at all (unless it's in PM).

Ok... This might be a long one...

Starting off, the hair. Yeah, the color mattered, let's not even pretend it didn't, it was a tremendously defining characteristic of the character so let's not pretend it wasn't a big deal; However, it's not the hair color that bothers me, it's the style. It's so pop. There are people in boy bands that have similar cuts. It reminds me, constantly, of who the target audience is. It's the kind of hairstyle you'd find opening any random magazine currently on stands. Yeah, the same could be said of the last 2 games but for a game that is supposed to be about been rebellious and fighting 'the man' finding the protagonist sporting a hair cut right off a teen magazine seems rather hypocritical.

He character is inconsistent. He is rather erratic, he's an a'hole one minute and considerate the next. Granted, his character is the victim of bad writing but it's still there. He is what ever the scene call for him to be and not what a flushed out character should be in the situations he's put in. He doesn't really grow at all, and if he was never meant to then that would fine, but as this is supposed to be a character arc then it's an issue. Add to that he way he talks. Yeah, the cursing, too, but I mean his actual speech. The way he says things sometimes is bland (and sometimes is slurred). There aren't that many ups and downs in the way he talks and the things he says so it comes off as making the game seem like it took no risks with his character, which is kinda what I mean. In the diverse world of video games he doesn't really stick out much, there are plenty of characters around like this one.

He's not clever. He drops the dumbest one liners and he should be called on them.

He's not that interesting looking. Yeah, I'm sure he's handsome, who isn't in video games, but he isn't interesting to look at. He looks bland, generic and he wouldn't really stick out in a crowd. I know that people love to point out that as a positive but it's not. This is a video game not witness protection. His design should give him a personality on it's own and here it just makes him bland and generic, there is nothing unique about him. Even his color scheme is bland and boring. And I know how much people love to drop the 'he is the kind of character you see walking down the street' line but I wouldn't and don't want to play as some random dude I see walking down the street, I want to play interesting characters (Which Nathan Drake qualifies as in the same way Indiana Jones qualifies; they have personality and are put in interesting situations), specially in my fantasy or action games. The game is not realistic enough to warrant realistic properties, specially from the protagonist of a game that is this unrealistic.

Before anyone decides to drop the 'so the previous DMC game were better at this or that, then?' I'll add my next point. This was supposed to be better than the previous games by leaps and bounds in every department. This game was advertise as been as good as literature and film and bring a sophistication to the franchise that only NT could deliver (and I could make a joke on NT's expense about that but won't). This did nothing of the sort and we all know it. This game is no better than the rest of the franchise in so many places, worse in others, but it didn't do anything for Dante. He is not the next Hamlet, nor has he been elevated from what the other games had to offer to a more profound or fascinating character, which was the point of the reboot in the first place and if it didn't even do that... Well, then.

He really is a fan fiction version of old Dante. There is so much here of what seems like someone's idea of what Dante should be like rather than a genuine interpretation of a younger version of him with anger issues. This comes off as a teenager's power fantasy about how his characters does a'hole things and gets away with it. I read a few of these when I was in high school, he really comes off as that kind of character.

Wait...what teen magazine would sport that kind of hairstyle?

I've never seen a boyband member have this kind of hairstyle except in punk bands.

Actually if you read my fanfiction interpretations of him, he's a lot better then the game makes him out to be. One thing I actually didn't like about DmC (Yes I know, shocker right?) Was that they didn't flesh out Dante's character as much as I wanted, so I made fanfiction to show them better in my own interpretation.

You do make good points...however I disagree with all of them save a few.

But I'll leave it at that.

Are you actually asking me to name or list teen magazines for you? 'cause I don't know any by name, I just have younger cousins who don't stop talking about the content.

Oh God.

Someone get me out of this thread...

Thanks for dropping by.

You read the title, you venture in, you should know what to expect.

You know what?

I certainly hope so.

The point of this was to hear what we don't like about it, right? We don't have to agree we just have to keep it civil. I've often found it that my views regarding the series are rather unique so I wasn't really expecting agreements but I'm kinda used to it.

Anyway, I hope this helped. It seemed to me like asking the question was begging for the thread to crash, burn, and kill all of the villagers but it didn't go too badly.

Yeah, I know. And I appriciate you being civil. Still I can have my own agreements and disagreements as well.

Yeah, realizing it now, this is probably gonna be one of the hardest fanfics I've written so far.

Let's say you're a fan of apples, and you encounter a fan of oranges. Wow what an edgy teen, he likes such grimdark fruit "**** you lol not in a million fruit sales". He's equally impressed with your life choices: "you just can't deal with change, it's not like apples didn't have problems, you just don't like the new peel!"

Imagine being asked to choose between two completely different things, neither of which are mutually exclusive, but no matter what choice you make one fanbase is going to dump all over you for it.

Now imagine being a fan of apples, and someone asks you to explain your reasoning to them because they just can't put themselves in the mindset of someone who likes a different food than they do. "Surely there must be some sweeping difference that you see in all of us orange fans, what is it that drives your hate?"

What drives my hate has very little to do with the actual fruit.

Edit - language, I also accidentally a word

Nice! I'd say this is a good example of how I feel about DmC; I don't exactly hate it, but it just isn't what I look for in a Devil May Cry game. The hate comes mainly from the unnecessary change and how it doesn't remind me of the old DMCs in any way, aside from small things like the new characters having the same names as the old ones and stuff. I'd go as far as to say that it isn't a Devil May Cry game, at least, it's not a part of the original series. So it's like a spin-off as well as a reboot... a speboot? Boot-off?
...Spinboot.

pretty much this.

And while I'm here, I'll mention that I was pretty awful about this in the past. I got way too caught up in the circlejerk of hate and was exactly the kind of douchebag ruining the fun for everybody. After many months off, I realized that it's not that big of a deal, so I'm less upset over it. I still don't like the new game, but some people love it, so hey, props to them!
