Also, I'm not denying that the demon world is split up into different parts, as that is indeed the case, but Mundus was the supreme ruler of all of hell and demon kind up until his defeat at the hands of Sparda and later Dante.
After said defeat, powerful demons began fighting each other in order to rule, many of them conquering different parts of the demon world, such as Berial conquering the Fire Hell.
He wasn't "bound" to Mallet Island, that's simply where he resided in order to regain his power.
Even then, he was still within the demon world.
He had been sealed in the demon world by the Temen-ni-gru up until DMC3.

Wait, something seems off. Weren't mundus sealed in hell actually? how comes it implies he isn't in hell but rather sealed somewhere else?
Most likely because Mundus was sealed away in a secluded part of hell, hence why demons would be fighting for power over the rest of it.
@King-Sess: Interesting. Though I thought that the art/artwork implies other things like Nero being Vergil's son also. Except people don't take that as anything. So whether this is also the case here, I don't know. I was just using Berial as an example to make a point about Hell being divided. Which you agree with and I like the points you've made.
But all of this aside, we're really meant to be discussing who would win if Argosax and Mundus fought. And I still give that victory to Mundus.

Mundus would probably win if he was at full power, I'm just confused as to why if he had defeated Argosax, then why didn't he destroy him?
Maybe cause he wanted him as his servant? And who knows, maybe he was before Sparda kicked both's ass.
That's a possibility, though I just would sort of imagine Mundus killing those who had the potential to usurp or rival him, Idk.

(Which was probably out of desperation, but also a trick to possibly make Dante end up like how Vergil did)
Im not sure Argosax is common demon. He seems to be some kind of demon essence in his core, able to manipulate and corrupt human world even from hell (Arius and military). Seems to me that Argosax is some sort of demonic energy manifestation as contrary to Mundus who was albeit powerful but demon.
Sparda only had enough strength to seal Mundus away, not destroy him completely. I'd assume it was the same case for Mundus and he was only able to "lock" Argosax away. It seems to be the case that if a powerful demon can't be killed, it ends up being sealed away as if shut off from the rest of existence (banished) if you will.
There maybe different types of hell or different borders of hell just like on Earth.
If any demon (or even any human that became a demon) is knocked off, then they'll just return to hell/the afterlife.
That doesn't happen with Arkham, Arius or Sanctus though, that I'm aware of.
I'm sure their souls were warped to a different plane of existence though. For all we know, they could've become one of the demons we had to fight later on.
Hm, interesting. And not too farfetched to believe since they all held some form of demonic power within them around the time of their "deaths". There's no saying that something else didn't become of them after the events of the games.
The question of this thread would be more awesome if you include the other final bosses such as The Savior, Sanctus, Arogax Arius, Abigail (DMC movie) and Arkham (final transformation). But even if you include all of them, I already got the answer who would win. Simple, the Demon Emperor, Mundus.
Why? Its because his abilities and powers could destroy all of them just a few seconds evidently from what he did to one of his loyal servants, Griffon. Mundus cast a deadly massive electrical spell upon Griffon with no mercy and pure suffering before his death. So imagine Mundus cast a spell like that to every each one of the villains within the DMC universe. Just a blink of an eye and they're gone for good. Done. Lol!
Also, Mundus is the strongest DMC villain ever in DMC history evidently that Dante have no choice but to transform himself into his father's ultimate devil trigger, the legendary dark knight, Sparda, to defeat Mundus. Tell me, which other DMC series that Dante transforming himself into Sparda to defeat the final bosses? I don't think none of the series except DMC1 of course. That's basically shows that Mundus is the toughest enemy that Dante ever face in his life.

But Dante easily surpasses Sparda in power by the time of DMC2.

But The Savior isn't a human? He's some sort of a demonic statue that Sanctus created him. Correct me if I'm wrong. Which sources that states DMC2 Dante is much stronger than DMC1 Dante? Is there any difference in strength between all Dante from all DMC series?
