Am I the only one who would actually like it if Dante was smoking in this game?
I'm a smoker and I do it because I like it. It might not make me cool or anything, but it is a choice I have taken and I do not plan on stopping any time soon. Because of that, I thought it was cool to see Dante smoke in the first trailer.
First of all, it was incredibly cheeky, because we live in a world where smoking is starting to become taboo and is hated on by some people. Those who smoke are getting less and less space to do it on, as it is banned in most places. Soon we won't even be able to smoke outside or in our own homes either. It's like a witch-hunt!
Second, smoking is and will always be a sign of rebellion. At first, smoking was considered cool and if you were smoking, you got some cool-factor immediately. It adds to the whole "against the system" attitude Dante has going on for him in this game.
Third, it is a provocative way to make taunts with. Put it out in the face of the demons, flick it at them, blow smoke in their faces, stuff like that.
And fourth, it is a sign of Dante's humanity. Smoking is considered a weakness, an addiction, both of which is very commonly human. Some can't stop eating candy, some take drugs, some drink lots of alcohol, some wants the adrenaline running no matter the cost, there are many examples of addiction and each of them displays a human weakness. And it is something I can relate to as a person and a smoker.

These four points are my reasons why I would want Dante to keep being a smoker in this game. He doesn't have to have a cigarette hanging from his mouth all the time, but the occasional scene where he lits a cigarette or uses it like he did in the first trailer would be sufficient. Maybe even display an ashtray or an empty pack in his trailer or something.
That's all I want, but what do you want and why?

I've never been for smoking at all. I just can't understand why some choose to pay money to shorten their lives. I understand Dante is of supernatural origin and gets impaled by his own sword at least 5 times a day, but If there ever was any form of 'Cool/Bad boy' image attached to having a cancer stick in your mouth, it certainly dropped off after the highschool days finished.

Definitely against it.

At first i'm really against at dante smoking.I would also probably never smoked after what happened to my father.
But i couldn't care less anymore whether this dante would smoke or not. This is just a video game after all.

Against.
I'm not going to lie: Smoking looks pretty cool sometimes. I even tried it one summer. Didn't work out so great.
That said, it seems kinda out of place in Devil May Cry. That, along with the fact that fans hated Dante's nicotine fixation in the original trailer means that it's probably not coming back.

But really good points. A craving for cigarettes does showcase his humanity.

I think smoking is idiotic. However, it would fit Dante's character to have him smoke. I'd like it if he smoked in this game. Even all he did was reference it by saying something like: "I need a smoke" after fighting a tough demon.

I don't smoke at all, really dislike it, but I'd like Dante to smoke, those tiny things make him more believable, more human.

Drugs and alchohol would be even better though, but I can't see they making Dante injecting himself with stuff, even it being a M rated game.

I think it's bad. Even though the game is rated M, many youngsters tend to buy games above their age.
And this new character is appealing to teens.

So the message of smoking is cool plus kids around 13-17 years = Kids and teens start smoking.

Let's say for example a boy at age of 16 buys DmC, plays it and becomes a huge fan of DmC Dante. At some time later he is offered a cigarette by someone at school:
he's more likely to have a positive assosciation with the cigarette if he has seen scenes of DmC Dante smoking as if it's cool (like in E3 2010 trailer ending).

Smoking ain't a joke.

Personally i don't give a ***** (* =self censor). He's a new character, and anyone who jumps on DmC Dante for smoking is a dumb ass in my opinion. I don't see it as a problem in a game made for 18+.

The problem which i have mentioned above is that when someone below age 18 gets his or her hand on DmC and is influenced by DmC Dante smoking.
Low self esteem + no friends (acceptance) = isn't that one of the big reasons why people smoke?
And if you add a smoking game character who the teen finds cool, then it's more likely he or she says yes to a cig.

Dante has hard alcohol bottles lying around in most of the other games - a sign that he's part-human, might have a problem getting to sleep, or just loves drinking/being smashed. In that sense, the smoking doesn't bother me, as long as it's not to try to say that smoking itself is amazingly fantastic.

I've never smoked myself, apart from trying it out and being constantly offered some in clubs by friends, occasionally having one, although the nicotine did not affect me, and I've never bothered buying my own. Frankly nowadays smokers are almost demonised, but it is kind of nice to make conversation when you're smoking with another smoker, relegated to the steps or alleys outside of all the non-smoking public places now. It's also something to concentrate on in social situations, something else to be doing with your hands and your mind. I don't do it myself now, but I appreciate that it has its hooks.

I'd prefer if Dante didn't do it, somehow... but if he does, it doesn't really matter.

I don't really care either way if he smokes or not. I don't smoke and never will but I have some people that do in my family and I've never really mind it. Drugs and alcohol will be probably degrade Dante's character and make him seem rather silly instead of just straight out cool... so I don't know about those unless they do something like in the trailer where the part that you see is the hangover the next day.

I smoke all the time. And it really was no big deal that Dante smoked. I mean Snake smoked ALOT and i think he is a more iconic character than Dante (dont stone me)

For:
Dante's a gangsta (In my opinion) in this game. He's been on the streets and has lived in many places growing up. Might as well light up a cig and kick ass. While I've never smoked and don't plan on starting, Dante's character fits a smoker. Also to McdD, I get what you mean with that below sixteen getting this game and becoming a smoker for fan reasons, but it's not the worst that can happen. A kid copied Naruto and buried himself in sand and died from it. At least Dante isn't eating razor blades everyday.

Side note: Classical Dante eats pizza and strawberry sundaes everyday? Fans tend to follow the characters they like, even though its bad for you. Not ALL fans do that, but there are some die hard fans who do that.

Snake smoking even helped him detect lasers. ^^
"Now to use the Cigarettes I hid in My STOMACH! AWESOME!"

Stupid.Just plain stupid.
Since when watching naruto would make a kid bury himself? Stupid comparison man.

Actually, the only thing stupid about it was the kid. And kids are stupid, solely for that reason their minds and intelligence haven't fully evolved yet. They pick up on things they see and copy it. Many cases, not just Naruto, are made about this. I know that the creators of Mortal Kombat have been sued plenty a time, because some kids have copied what they saw in the game. And that game is rated M as well.

It is up to the parents to make sure their kids aren't playing these games if they are easily affected by what they see. If the game is rated M then the responsibility lies on the parents, not the creators or the producers of the game. That is also why Mortal Kombat has won these cases, because they have done protocol and made sure the warnings and ratings were correct.

If DmC is rated M and Dante is smoking in the game, then it isn't Ninja Theory's or Capcom's fault if kids start smoking due to this game.

I know and i agree.By the way,did i ever mention that kids here in my country is already playing god of war at 7 to 12 years old and the parents don't even care?

It's parents responsibility to make sure their kids don't get bad games.
But as game developers with a conscious mind that many kids will still play your game, making smoking look good is a bad idea.

I am not against it, i am just saying this might happen. Wasn't it you Zero who said that kids are probably a big group that will buy the game or games in general?
