Legit though, DMC4 sucked.

DmC begs to differ.

And that's what I like about H&S games. Killer is Dead does this well by not trying to slam a whole bunch of mechanics in my face and uses less in order to do more. With DMC4, there's a ****-ton of things that you need to memorize to do combos and that can get annoying.
Really? Other than the gimmick enemies that require you to use angel/demon weapons, yes you can. I used Reb more than anything in DmC - only using angel/demon when I was forced to and occasionally throwing round trips out.

So DMC4 is bad because it's not casual friendly?

On the flipside; is DmC bad because it's "casual friendly"?

Of any complaints I have against DmC, that's not one of them. Others may feel differently, of course.

Likewise, DMC4 isn't bad because it isn't "casual friendly". I wouldn't call it "exclusively hard-core friendly", either. I mean, there's no way in hell I'm hardcore; tons of people can pull off much better combo-ing than I do (though honestly, I've surprised myself with some of those crazy-a$$ed skills, from time to time).

It all comes down to subjectivity. Saying one or the other sucks legitimately isn't true; they are both good to someone, and they are both bad to someone else. *Shrug*

I don't think DmC is a bad game. But to put it in FPS terms; DmC = CoD, DMC4 = ArmA. xX420yolosn1p3zMLGproXx is going to love DmC because it's le gritty reboot where he can pull off flashy things easily, and he'll hate DMC4 because it requires a lot more time to get good at.

What was his reasoning for that? I'm curious what his comparison is between the two.

The thing is though, most gamers don't look at action games like you and I do. They take the genre as a whole, and see the most popular title as the base to judge other games on. So it doesn't matter to most how different GoW and DMC systems are. I can't really see the similarity myself, nor did I confront my fellow over this since I was way more busy with summarizing the historic importance of DMC 1 =)

I was having a nerd rage when people were calling Darksiders 2 combat like GoW, when it is way way more closer to classic DMC. But meh, fans of other genres probably have similar problems with their most popular titles as well =)

I'd say that's a little too much of an assumption on what people like, and appending DmC to the juvenile end of the spectrum. I'd also say there's still quite a high ceiling to a lot of DmC's more in-depth stuff, if SamD's videos are anything to look at.

However, all in all I do not one bit think that how difficult a game makes it for you to do something makes it good or bad. We should always be striving for fluid, clean, and competent controls and systems in games.

There was a comic I saw that brought up that making a game's mechanics or controls harder to use doesn't make the game better, and was shown with a some girl on the side of a plane going "I changed the controls to make it harder to fly!" while the pilots were freaking out as the plane was going down. It's a perfect analogy really, wish I could find the image :'(

I'm not saying there isn't a high skill cap, there is. My point is that the skill cap isn't as high, and it's a lot easier to get in to, and this makes it more appealing to casuals who don't want to invest time in getting good.
Are there going to be people on DmC who are far better than the masses because they took the time to get good? Yeah, just look at Sam's videos. But unlike previous DMC games DmC won't punish you for being bad. I haven't even died in DmC, all my deaths are from falling off of ****, not dying to enemies lol.

DmC likes to make you feel good. I have finished missions where I died once or twice but I still get an SS rank. At first it made me think "Cool I am good at this." But I later realized that getting an SS rank on a mission really wasn't that special and so now I pretty much ignore the rank screen.

Why do people find the ranking system such a huge deal? It's just a performance aggregate that rewards us with currency the better score we get.

The whole point of most games is to get better at them, and to be rewarded if you do. Saying 'DmC won't punish you for being bad'... well, that's not a good thing. You want to get better and feel like what you do actually matters. You want to have as much incentive to play the game as possible. The rankings really add replay value in that sense, as well. I remember sucking in one or two levels, and still getting an S or something. What's the point of the ranking if it doesn't reflect how you did? It's like they threw it in there for fun - might as well have left it out.

I don't think it's a huge deal but it sort gives me incentive in a way. When I see that I have mostly C's on son of sparda then I will go back and try to improve that. If my C becomes an A then that means I got better at the game and I get to feel good about myself for a little bit.

No DMC4 is bad because there's no need for so many weapons and memorizing button mechanics if they serve no purpose.

Also, I didn't the ranking system was something that proved we were worth anything in life. Are you guys really saying that you need to get an S rank just to feel special about a game?

Nah, it's that it gives you a sense of progress and position within the game's "skill system."

I can understand it, but honestly I think a games replayability will depend much more on the gameplay itself. I always play games to have fun, and DmC allows me to have a lot of fun. I like Devil May Cry games because of the stuff I get to do, not how well I'm doing it. I'll improve because I want to, not because a system told me I could be better.

Getting ranks is fun but the game itself is what I care about more. I spend a lot more time goin crazy in blood palace than I do trying to improve ranks.
