What if DmC wasn't DMC.

It would've still gotten hate regardless. The second fans hear that capcom was helping NT make an action game with demons, fans would automatically assume that Capcom would be done with DMC and do this new IP and argue that "DANTE IS BETER DAN THES GAI!! FAK HEM!!" and the hate train would continue.

Sadly, I have to agree. I think, if it still had been Devil May Cry, but perhaps new Dante being an entirely different protagonist, rather than a rebooted Dante, it might have been...

You know what? Never mind. I just realized the error in what I was about to say; they did that before, and people hated/still hate Nero.

In all honestly, it's difficult to say: if it was completely devoid of the Devil May Cry title, it theoretically could have had a better reception. But as has been pointed out, all of the other elements that make it what it is would cause an outcry of "rip-off", so I figure, the only way it could have been received better than it was, is if it entirely wasn't DMC in any way, shape, or form to begin with.

Not that it particularly matters, because you can't please everyone. Every game receives a varying amount of praise and criticism--but yeah, I figure the title, and the fact that they came up with a wholly different version of Dante was a major part of the poor reception it received. That's just my opinion, though. For all we know, it would have received the exact same even if entirely unrelated. *Shrug*

I don't think it would be disliked on same scale. Even if it be called rip-off. I mean, SCE helped to develop HS, who was called rip-off from GoW, but i doubt anyone was worried that SCE discontinue GoW because of it.

It would've still been given negativity because when they hear "CAPCOM making a HACK N SLASH game with NINJA THEORY and IT'S NOT DEVIL MAY CRY but a BLACK HAIRED guy with GUNS and a SWORD who kills DEMONS and is PART DEMON himself." that in itself would get fans rabid.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Which is why I said they would literally have to remove the other elements that mark it as Devil May Cry as well, to lessen the chance of the tremendous backlash they originally suffered to begin with. :)
