Vergil DMC 4 set prior to DMC 3

They need to address DMC2 sooner or later and while Vergil was not part of it, doesn't mean he can't be made in some way one of the wheels that set the events of the game in motion or that his fate will tie in to events of that game's possible sequel.

Arius could have come from Fortuna originally, and left island as result of something happening while Vergil was there. Agnus' research, focusing a lot on Yamato and pieces of Nelo Angelo's armor, could have served as basis for creation of Secretaries. And so on.
Frankly, the most they ever need to acknowledge DMC2 is to have Lucia show up in a cameo of some sort to establish that the next game takes place after it.

The overall story of that game was fairly inconsequential, even with the whole "Dante killed the metaphysical embodiment of despair" thing.

If vergil returned after 2 he wouldn't be a challenge for dante I think somehow.
Unless after he survived Mundus' puppet show he has been kicking some ass in hell, developing his skills, while getting in touch with (hypothetical) junior through dreams, getting the right focus. Sparda's power is in his sword and that one is in Trish's hands, at least when she ain't handing it over to corrupted old geezers, so any power boost Dante had came from his own determination and maturing.

Well, Dante became more powerful over time so Vergil would probably also improve. Also, in my opinion, Yamato beats pretty much every weapon in Dante's arsenal. I mean, I don't think that even stuff like Pandora, Beowulf, Rebellion or Alastor can match a blade which is able to cut dimensions.

Regardless of yamato Dante has become more and more powerful while vergil got a boost from mundus which was not his own power.Dante has gained a lot more power since mallet island ,where as vergil is either dead or trapped in hell with no yamato. So even if he came back and got yamato back he would be at a huge disadvantage

Yes that's all well and good, but there's no point trying to compare future Vergil to Dante even in hypothetical scenarios, because this isn't really the topic for it.

Regardless, I'm kind of bummed that it takes place before DMC 3. Probably be set around a year before it if my memory of the dialogue serves me well. Something about it being a year since the two had met.

Wasn't that meeting addressed in the game and manga? The opening fight between the two in DMC 3 is what I thought was the implied meeting.

if by opening fight your referring to the opening credits of DMC 3 that's a flash forward to the first Vergil boss

unless they were both some were that just happens to look exactly the top of the Temen-Ni-Gru

Well actually, hang on a minute here.

I just looked over those tweets. The question that was asked was in relation to why Vergil had Force Edge. The answer given is that it's set before DMC 3. That doesn't really say that all of the scenes with Vergil in them take place before 3. Yes, his gameplay is non-canon. But as for the story, there could be a scene before 3 and one set around 4 or something.

They could have just given him his own unique campaign with his own levels. Same with Lady and Trish. Trish could have an entirely unique campaign clearing out all the demons in Fortuna while Dante did his thing for example.

LOL three separate campaigns? They might as well make DMC5 right away then!

But seriously, good idea though.

If there is a DMC5 it won't have vergil as it really does look like he is gone after DMC1

so I dunno where the story could go

Just another one of Dante's adventures. It's not like they kept to a strict continuity. Devil May Cry can exist without Vergil.

I hope if it is coming that dante is the main protagonist , if nero is in it then he should have a seperate campaign or a backseat
