Silent Hill f

Yeah, reviews are out. 87 on OpenCritic currently. Still some 7s from reviewers I usually trust and understand (NOT IGN, but rather GameInformer's Marcus).

I've been trying to just skim reviews to see any mention of how it explains the Fog World and Otherworld and any relation to the town of Silent Hill. Nothing really mentioned that I saw besides casually calling the horror/scary world in f something else (which I won't say for possible spoilers).

I guess I'll just wait to play it myself. Tomorrow! I think. I pre-ordered the Deluxe Ed and should have 2-day advanced access.
 

Silent hill f gets an english dub
Not sure how to approach this. I generally play video games in English (despite watching anime in Japanese). I do kind of appreciate how the English VA seems a bit campy, like the old games. But I wonder if I'd be un-immersed with all the Japanese characters, aesthetics, themes, etc being in campy English. I can still deal with English VA in heavy Japanese setting/themes if it's good English VA'ing, or at least VA'ing that fits the style (ala Persona, Like a Dragon, etc). But if it's even just a tad campy, in horror? ehh...

edit: and yes, I realize campy horror IS a thing. Camp and horror kind of go hand-in-hand. But I dunno. One of Junji Ito's anime had really bad English VA, imo, and it really made me just enjoy it less.

ehh as long as they got dual language options im fine.

ill probably end up getting it next year anyway.
 
Just started before bed. I'm about a half hour in and logged off. Definitely scary and atmospheric. This is my first SH game since Downpour. I'm really hoping I'm able to backtrack around town, as there are areas I missed while running for my life lol. I'm really eager to see how great the story and frustrating the combat is, per the consensus it seems. I'm also really curious if I'll love this game so much I'll be motivated to do the NG+ cycle for all endings.

I guess we'll find out.
 
I have played a few hours, has a great atmosphere but i dunno it feels like it is missing something to give that extra oomph. The silent hill 2 remake is definitely better, saying that though silent hill f is still a very good game in it's own way.
 
I'm only a few hours in. Atmosphere is great. Story is really interesting. I don't mind the combat. Even the f*cking 3 second stamina regen delay. But the encounter setups can be real bad. Sometimes Hinako herself obscures the player's target, narrow spots, unnecessary multiple enemies, etc. It's kinda frustrating that they are focused on combat, but make combat unfun and unrewarding.

Still, I hear more NG+ cycles give you better weapons and if you keep leveling up HP and Stam, maybe the combat is more fun by NG+3 lol.

I'm taking it slow, mainly b/c I need the constant mental breaks from horror games and Hades 2 is addicting lol. But I think I may actually aim for all 5 endings, I'm engrossed that much.
 
I finished this yesterday and have to say i did enjoy it, but i feel the stamina system held if back a lot and i really wish there had been some sort of firearm in it.
May I ask what difficulty settings you had?

I started Hard/Hard, but ended up changing it to Story/Hard and combat was so much more tolerable. So far, only 2 of the 6 puzzles I've done made me look up a guide, so I feel Hard Puzzles are fine.
 
I did hard combat and hard puzzles and it was super frustrating at times. I got lucky more than once where enemies died when i was one hit away from dying myself.

Didn't use any guides so lots of trial and error in it, i think it needed guns like sh2 remake had.
 
Got my steelbook a few late but I got it. Honestly, it's a bit bad ass. So is the game, really.
The biggest issue I have is that it's not scary. Yeah, the world, themes and presentation are good, it's a good horror game, but, thinking back at the intros to SH's 1 & 3, and the general feel of those games, this one falls short when it comes to the actual horror. Worst still, is the slap in the face to those people who volunteered to be the face models. My God, they are hideous. I had the same issue with Trish in 5. From what I know, modeling the characters just produces awful results on the RE Engine so scanning is preferred but that is still not a good result. It's so hit or miss. Looks like UE5 has the same issue. Just look at the cast:

These people worked the actors over with the ugly stick so hard you'd think they owed them money.

I'm also not loving the fact that they changed the
f to feminine and not Forte. It was so much more poetic as a musical symbol.

Isn't it still forte style?

But yeah, UE5 is known to just be bad with face models by default. It IS possible to make beautiful characters in UE5, but apparently it takes some extra effort. And AAA devs taking extra effort? Ehh...

Anyway, I rolled credits a couple nights ago. This is definitely a game I would love to "perfect/100%" on Steam, or at least get all the endings. But...my god the combat is horrific. Even on Story difficulty, I just cannot bear it. So instead, I watched a few story analysis videos. Really interesting game and story. Just give us a F'in gun or make Hinako not take 10 years to recover from a whiff attack.

As for the "is it a Silent Hill game?" debate, ehh...I'll accept the consensus's acceptance of White Claudia being the connection to the series. It's not explicitly stated in SHf, but it's a strong enough inference, ala Dark Souls style of environmental storytelling, to accept the connection to Silent Hill (the town) as canon. Gameplay and story and atmosphere definitely fit the SH series. ...besides no F'in gun!

The game revolves around themes pertaining to the Japanese women's movement in Japan in the 60's, which, if analysts are to be believed, is not new to the series. SH3 also explored themes of feminisms. Anyway, I've been pretty busy with work so I am making snail's pace progress with the game. I'm going to have to save my opinion for later.

Oohh, okay. I thought you just meant the font style lol.

But yeah, take your time! I'm eager to hear others' thoughts. And if they do NG+ or what it on YT, etc.
