Play3 Magazine Review : 8.9/10

To be fair, he said "look exactly like them", not similar.
I'm also sure he meant having all of those qualities rolled into a character including the same attitude and background story. Not or.

And just because he has a few connections with the characters you mentioned, doesn't automatically make him generic all around. To me it seems as if you were focusing too much on red clothing and white hair when it's pretty common.
And some of those characters were actually made after Dante was created.

Also Nero's arm doesn't equate to Dante. Just pointing that out.

Although I'm not saying Dante isn't generic one bit. He kinda is.
I'm just saying that you took parts of his statement and treated as an "or" statement.

Yes. But you can help but feel that Dante and Inuyasha have too much of the same story from what DMC3 showed.

Same with DMC4 and Bleach.

If every DMC's gonna copy a popular anime, then what's the point of buckling down to create an actual DMC story if you're just piggybacking from others? I know there's no originality anymore, but still.

DMC was inspired by Dante's Inferno in the first place. They took ideas they liked, changed them, adapted them and modernised them until it became DMC. You can really see that with the 3rd game.

I don't think you understand how reviews work, in fact Ebert himself acknowledges that opinion determines the merit of art, he gave Spider-man 2, 4 stars the same as the Godfather but he acknowledges that it is clearly not a better film, just that in it's genre it excels among its peers. Also art is subjective so how do you clinically dissect what is good or bad about it. Story and music naturally have a factor in whether or not a game is good and there is absolutely no way to judge that based on fact, I've been a fan of combichrist long before they were announced to be doing the soundtrack, therefore I'm going to be biased and feel it positively affects the game in a positive way you may disagree but we aren't going to go into a debate on bpm, and sound fidelity. This is why I consider DMC 1 the best in the series so far, it's combat may not be as strong as DMC3, but the entire package, music, character, story, enemy designs i find far superior and allot of that is opinion which cant be debated in any clinical manner.
Also Hitman received an 83 for ps3 on metacritic http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/hitman-absolution which doesn't seem to contradict a score of 88, but i guess popular opinion on a game you've never played is clearly wrong based on your preconceived notions of what makes a good game.
Also another poster said you should have just said i don't agree with this review, how about NO since all you have played is a ****ing demo of the game! You have zero basis to rate, review or debunk other published reviewers scores until you've played the game. How about simply saying "i don't think this game will be that good, but i'll wait and see." or even "I'm not interested in this game."

I thought it was pretty obvious that what i hate(the oversexualisation of the main character for example) equals what i find bad; and i might be wrong but when reviewing a game people usually put in the "good" part what they liked about the game and in the "bad" part what they didn't so you are not really making sense here.

It is bad for me and it's all that matters when i'm playing the game. Not what some reviewer or some "pro" think about said game. I hate first person view in video games so to me all the FPS are crappy games and nothing anybody says can change my opinion on that matter. Millions of people like this kind of game though and i'm not gonna say that they have bad taste or that the reviewers who give Halo, Far Cry, Half Life or Bioshock near perfect scores are biased or paid. Different strokes for different folks.

Wait... wait... wait.... wait. Before I get into this, I want to say that I hate FPSs as well. Almost all of them.

However, I loved Mirror's Edge. If it had been in third-person however, it probably would have not have been as immersive -- I'm just talking about that specific game, however. Most immersive games (to me) were done in third person.

Ha! yeah! I'd completely forgot about this gem! That's probably the only game in first person view i've ever liked. Kudos for reminding me! I think i heard or red about a sequel but i can't remember where...any info on that?

I'm gonna' second that- even the good FPSes aren't really my thing. The creative well beneath them has been polluted by an obsession with hyper-realism. Besides, when you're always stuck behind somebody's eyes, it can seriously hurt the flexibility of the gameplay, as you're trapped in that perspective.

There are a few really good ones, and I enjoy the ones that take a creative twist like Portals, but in general it gets quite repetitive. I do enjoy some 3rd-person shooters, though, like inFamous 2 and the like. I just feel like the FPS genre hasn't been properly explored.

I don't pretend that these games are necessarily worse, since my opinion is compacted with the fact that I'm not really that kind of gamer. I'm just trying to paint a bit of the picture of why someone like me finds most FPSes unpleasant. Just like many people don't see the point of RPGs, sports games, or hack-n-slashes.

In my opinion, Bioshock is the best fps ever created. The story telling and the discover of Rapture is one of my best experience as a gamer. And the fact that you discover with the eyes of your character, have a restrained point of view contribute to the experience.
I could tell A LOT of things about this game, but since I don't speak a really good english, It could be really annoying to read a full paragraph of grammatical nonsense and mistakes \o/

I love FPS games. The first ones I played were Goldeneye and Perfect Dark when I was little. Then about a year later I was introduced to Halo: CE, and now Halo is my favorite FPS series. I loved Red Faction before it became whatever it is now. I recently tried out The Darkness II and it's pretty awesome. I've gotta pick it up along with the first. I own Bioshock 1 and 2, but I've yet to actually play through them. Same for Borderlands. I also really enjoyed Crysis 2. A recent game that didn't get much attention, but I think looks awesome is Syndicate. It kind of reminds me of Deus Ex: HR, and even though I have yet to actually finish it, I really like it(though you really can't just play it as an FPS). I don't like army FPS games(CoD, BF, MoH), though.

I didn't like fps until I got my hands on mirror's edge. Then I branched out to Bioshock, Portal, amnesia and Half-life. Those are the only fps I play for now. I can't see myself playing call of duty, especially not online.

Mirror's Edge certainly isn't an FPS. It's first-person platformer. Don't lump my traceur exploits in with Sergeant Shootypants McDuty :/

Owh yeah, how could i forgot about the Portal serie? Amazing story telling and jokes, especially in the second, when you play coop.

About music: that can actually be judged. If it fits the game, and if it suits situations in the game, and so on. I agree you can't say CombiChrist is good or bad, it's just a matter of taste. But you CAN ask yourself; does it suit the game? Does it work?
Only then can you use it as an argument to influence grading. And I understand what you're saying about Ebert, but that's what I mean as well. Ebert probably focused on how much the film innovated and stood out from its peers. That's something you can measure by asking what makes it stand out from the crowd. But what you cannot say is: ''I like this movie, so I'm going to award it a 9/10''. Just saying you like it isn't enough; you have to base that opinion on arguments that are not based solely on personal emotions.

What you find superior about DMC1 doesn't matter. I will agree that the soundtrack is probably of a higher standard than that of DMC3. Again, that's something you can measure. If a soundtrack consists of monotonic beating on a xylophone, that will of course be rated lower than a masterpiece of orchestral music.

I can't believe somebody here said that if he didn't like something because it's not to his taste, that means the game sucks. It may suck to you, but it doesn't suck by definition just because you don't like it. It would be unfair to say ''I hate Bayonetta because it's not to my taste, so I'll write a review and give it a 4/10 or something.''

I believe I've said over and over again that I know I haven't played a finished product, but I can judge what I've seen and played so far. I can even compare it to the standard set by previous games. To say that I can't is denying the purpose of demos, which is to make you interested in a game and give you a taste of what the game will be like. It's a free country, so I will judge the demo. All I said was that I found that grade of 89/100 dubious. An 89/100 gives off the idea that the story, gameplay, graphics and soundtrack are all nearly flawless and all fit the setting perfectly. So yes, I doubt it's that good. May I have doubts? :P

I think that it's stupid to say that it doesn't deserve this or that some people rate too high, some too low. What matters is what you think of it.
And btw every review is biased because there is no objective way to play the game, are you gonna pull out some bestseller and then compare it's story to the game's story, or have an expert artist to tell you whether the games graphics look good or not?
It's an illusion that there is an objective way to review, in the end it's gonna be reviewers opinion, otherwise it would be pointless.

Just like there is no normal behaviour, everyones different, we are not machines that all think alike.

What you should do is find a reviewer with similiar mind set to yours...

Nobody says the game doesn't deserve this, but I do doubt it because an 89/100 is exorbitantly high, in my opinion. We'll have to wait and see if the game really is almost perfect as the grade implies.

If it were all up to one's opinion, reviews and reviewers would be pointless. In that case you could just watch an excerpt of the product and say: ''that looks like something I don't like/is not to my taste, therefore it's bad'', which is preposterous.
I wouldn't have an expert artist tell me whether the graphics look good. I would ask them if it's up to today's standard and whether or not it suits the game, and simply works.
That said, people's opinions can be included in reviews. Just don't let those opinions influence the grade, because nobody likes the same things you like. If you rated something a 5/10 because you don't like it, you have to be damn sure other people don't like it either. You write reviews for other people, after all, not for yourself or people like you.

Absolutely true, but even a reviewer has to base his review on an opinion, if it isn't his own then why bother...

Bioshock? Half-Life? Fallout? The list goes on...

Yes. To all. Yes, I have played them. No, I didn't like them. They didn't suit my tastes. Bioshock was... an immersive experience, but one that failed to captivate me. Half Life was cut scene that I could walk around in at first, then it just lead me down a somewhat linear path to shoot things. Fallout was just too much landscape for me. And the slow motion shooting just didn't keep my attention for very long... despite the tactical reasoning behind it.

You know which 'traditional' shooter I liked? The first Left 4 Dead. I had fun with that one. And I actually hate zombie-themed games and movies. But it didn't matter, because I could just pick up and play it. That, and it reminded me of the good old days of RE2. It's not quite as good as RE2, but it stands on it's own. I never plated the L4D sequels, though...

Mirror's Edge certainly isn't an FPS. It's first-person platformer. Don't lump my traceur exploits in with Sergeant Shootypants McDuty :/

You can't stand up against a whole tyrannical regime with kung fu antics alone (as much as I would love to... even in first-person) You need some sort of range-based power. Even if it's fireballs from your hand like in ''Magic Carpet''... which could technically be listed as a flight-simulator by that logic.

Not that I disagree outright, but I'll explain myself in a moment.

I know you can play the entire game by not firing a shot, but if you tried that even in a semi-realistic scenario, you'd be swiss cheese before completing the first wall run... or tic-tac-toe, or whatever traceurs want to call it.

It's even difficult to do so in Hard Mode (yes, I know that's the point, but do you see what I'm getting at, here?)

I'm not saying you're wrong, I actually agree with you. I like the fact that it's not really an FPS. But you can't deny that it has shooting in it. It's the same thing with Metroid Prime. It's not a shooter, it's a first-person adventure. With shooting used as a means of defense. Same thing with Condemned. It's first person melee-horror. With shooting.

Besides, Mirror's Edge is ''realistic fantasy''. Part of that fantasy is diving off the side of a building while shooting at the bad guys... something that could only be done in Max Payne... which, unfortunately, was pure shooter.

The only way to remove the shooting element entirely would be to give Faith extra gadgets, Dishonored-style... and that would only serve to take the player out of the experience.

Or this:

http://www.cracked.com/blog/7-real-suits-that-will-soon-make-world-cooler-place/

So, in conclusion, no it's not a shooter -- but yes, unfortunately, shooting must be a part of it to complete the illusion.

No news on a sequel, except for the initial report of, ''we're working on it'' from DICE. Unfortunately, there are also sequel holdups with Beyond Good and Evil 2, whose parkour looks especially fluid, giving even Assassin's Creed III a run for its money. But, neither one of those are going to come out anytime soon. :(

We'll just have to do with other parkour-action games until then.
