Opinion: Dante is No Major Loss

Vezild

Taking Back Lordran One Boss At a Time
NOW HEAR ME OUT! This is my opinion on all of this "I miss original Dante" and whatnot. This is MY opinion and I expect it to be respected like I respect everyone else's opinion whether they are contradictory or not.
I've noticed since before I became a member here that some people are basing their opinion on DmC on the fact that the original Dante is gone--which is okay, I guess.

But in my opinion, origiDante's leaving is of no consequence. The fact that our old white-haired friend is gone and replaced by this rougher, black haired man does not impact me beyond a little fleeting feeling of loss and uncomfortableness.

Blasphemy, you may say--but let me explain before you hit the reply board.

First of all, I felt like Dante's character was barely touched upon. I felt that he was on the shallow side of the character pool, right next to the many faceless fighters from Street Fighter or MvC. The most we knew about him was what little the four games told us and the bit that some of the novels told. Then again, I haven't read the novel. The bottom line is: I never felt close to Dante as a character. He was just an avatar for me when it came to playing the games. Sure, he was very cool. I really loved his slick personality--but how many of those cocky personalities do you see everywhere else? Besides, the four games showed different personalities all together and we are just assuming he's just maturing between DMC 3 and 2.

It is a handicap of sorts in this genre of gaming--the main character isn't fleshed out very well. But that's the problem, too: this is a game series. Gameplay is, in my eyes, top priority and the character traits can come later. I'd much rather blast a game for having mediocre gameplay than for abandoning some man made out of wireframes and polygons who wasn't fleshed out right. The gameplay throughout the series was a blast--but what happened to our main character? The men behind the games have failed there--they just do not know how to write a very compelling story.

Who knows what potential our original Dante could have had? I sure do not know, and for that, I must say I do not care for our origiDante as much as some of you do (and I am sorry, but I question that heavily because I cannot empathize with you). He is a virtual man who is as 2D as he is 3D, and for that, I do not mourn his leaving, but nor do I celebrate it.

So it also saddens me when I see that people are knocking the game because it does not feature origiDante. Because neoDante is not origiDante. Now, I know there are more reasons among you who believe that statement, but I can only assume what I can read, right?

Bottom-line: origiDante is, frankly, unimportant to me in relation with other aspects in the series--not just DmC.

Thank you for those who read this patiently.
EDIT: How is this for everybody? I want to keep the green color because I like the color green.

God of War is this genre of gaming, Heavenly Sword is this genre of gaming, Bayonetta is this genre of gaming and I think all the main characters in those games, Kratos, Nariko and Bayonetta respectively, are rather well fleshed out characters in their respective games. Especially Kratos, since he has had 3 games (and some handheld games too) to grow and develop. Dante has had 4. I blame the inconcistency of Capcom's choices between the games, not the genre of the game. You're right, Dante isn't all that fleshed out and he is a shallow character, but he doesn't need to be fleshed out. He is a cool hero of a cool game series and he doesn't need to be more than that. :D
I am curious to see where the new Dante will go and how he will turn out to be. He will probably be more fleshed out than the original Dante, but in the end all that matters is that you have had a great time playing the game. If you enjoy the character and enjoy the story along with the gameplay, then it doesn't really matter if the storyline is a Shakespearian play or not.

Ehh, I think Dante is a little more fleshed out than link or Mario but I see your point.

But at the end of the day it is the people who had a hand in crafting the story who are at fault because they couldn't see fit to follow someone else's lead.

First of all: Great wall of text, I couldn't find the words to bring the points across, which you did so easily.

Second: I disagree; I think character developement and story and whatnot are very important in video-gaming nowadays. The line between movie and game is slowly disappearing (Uncharted is proof) and cineasticity (not even a word, I guess) is becoming more important to gamers.
I think that well-established characters like Kratos, as ZweiLove already said, make a game just that much more likeable, because it becomes about more, than simply gameplay: It's the joy of watching character developement, of drama and tragedy, mixed with gameplay and personal style, which is why I love my PS3 so much.
There's so much more to a game, than simply gameplay and I think, people should start appreciating this form of entertainment for what it is and not for what it was twenty years ago.

Dante = Devil May Cry and since there is no Dante D*C = Nothing a zero.
I am so sure, that you are DevilArm from the NT-forums.

It could be possible that Dante probably had a different purpose when the first Devil May Cry was supposed to be a sequel to the Resident Evil series. *shrugs*

I agree with most if not all you've said,it's why even from the tgs2010 i just wasn't bothered about him being changed,i just didn't give rats ass about that set of polygons.

Yes, but my argument was that Dante was NOT fleshed out and that if he was, then it would have been a loss. Story is very important. Character developement is very important. But Dante, in my opinion, failed to meet my expectations for a developed character.

By the way, I can't tell if you're praising my wall of text or saying something bad about it xD Because it looks spaced between every paragraph to me

Dark skin? It's white on my computer

You can change themes....

Some people (including myself) prefer the old "darker" theme over the new "bright" theme and decided to switch to it.

Apparently Dark Drakan is using it as well.

A simple story of revenge, for example could be enough to flesh Dante out. The problem is: I felt Dante was not explained, developed, or significant enough in the plotline (whatever plot there was) to be as important as Kratos from the God of War series (I have not played them but I am familiar enough with his story to understand his reason to go all ballistic on his enemies), as Zwei and ReRave had said. And, if we are going to use that revenge (a la God of War), did they really touch upon Eva much? It would have been very nice to see a thick plotline under the main plotline about Eva's death and Dante's upbringing. Could have made a very nice story of revenge (in a Devil May Cry way, of course).

Ohhh...I had no idea you can do that. Sorry...I'll edit that right away.

Fair enough, you don't care ether way, it is your possition and we can only comment on it, agree, disagree, but not deny.

And so you don't care for the character. Does it bother you that we do? Or does it have to be a 'you don't care so we shouldn't care ether' situation?

EDIT: How is this for everybody? I want to keep the green color because I like the color green.

No, gross color, it makes reading too hard with a white background. A darker green will be easiesr on the eye. I had to highlight your post just to read it.

Yeah I prefer dark skins so still use the old one.

It's a 'here are my opinions so agree or disagree'. In a way, disagreeing is denying, is it not? It's my position and my opinion and yours may differ. I noticed the first comment here disagreed with my opinion. Fine by me.
And for now on I'm sticking with the normal color -.- Can't please both sides and be different at once xD
