You know it might've worked out better in the end if every DMC game had a diferent protagonist. That way they'd have no reason to explain why Dante was so diferent in each game.

Well at the end of the first game Dante defeated the all powerful and evil Mundus. The chapter to his story should of been over. But greedy capcom saw how hungry the fans were over DMC and they couldnt let a good thing pass. DMC2 sales were higher than DMC3!
But having a new protagonist would of been very interesting. They did it with Ominusha too some point.

But who would've been the protagonist for 2? Lucia? Vergil for 3 and Nero for 4? Would we really've gone far from the reservation? Would the series really be drasticly diferent if Dante wasn't a central point? I'm seriously asking, would they be the characters or would we have other completly new characters?

I don't think Lucia could of saved DMC2. I think it needed a whole new story and if a new main character was a good idea then go for it. I mean with new characters, it opens up the gameplay and it expands the world. And thats the same for the other 2 games. I think if you took Dante out of DMC4 and just game his time on screen to Nero and his backstory, it would of seems more like a complete game.
I mean the genre is only hack and slash. The best thing to do in a hack and slash is to have plenty of ways to....well.... hack and slash and if they made each game after dmc1 with new characters they could of done it pretty easily.
But i think a large part of DMC's lore was Dante and his design. So Capcom tried to milk him.

The idea of DMC2 being something completely different with no Dante appeals to me too. He could be an unlocked costume - like Trish was. After all even when he's the main character he doesn't say much. He could return in DMC3 (seeing as it's a prequel and he's young) and only be mentioned in DMC4 (since order searches for him) then finally re-appear in a more rpg-like fashion in DMC5 well you just choose who you wanna play with. Yeah, I totally stole what they did with Onimusha there. But I still think it would be cool.

You know I think if Capcom followed the old Rockstar Games formula, it would've been a little bad,
Poor James Earl Cash, He had such potential to have an interesting origin story and such

I think that may have been Kamiya's plan for the series.
Just rotating MCs and stories so they dont get old. And when they make a re appearance it would mean more.
Thats how he is approaching Bayonnetta, i guess.

So if he was still doing the series, he might have made vergil the main character of the hypothetical character of hypothetical 2.

the star is so not shine tonight lol........even with the new dmc game......the series just get dimmer and dimmer. and although i respect kamiya and love bayonetta gameplay......bayonetta's storyline and character don't really make much of an impact on me.

This is what I think Capcom should do-
1. Nero's background needs to be pubilcized
2. Give players more "freedom" with gameplay
3. Have a sort of power and/or ability web and level up system to give players a chance to have a custom Dante(kind of like Skyrim or Mass Effect)
4. Bring back Alastor as a main weapon in each game(this is more of a personal preferance)

That's how I see it too. I don't know whether Vergil would have been used at all, seeing as he died(?), but another character made by Kamiya would be just as good, looking at Bayonetta imo.

Well, Nero's lacluster welcome wasn't his fault as fans were given no idea as to why he should take over the series as his connection wasnt properly explained and they felt he was a unneccesary addition as you could have had Vergil or Sparda take over.
I agree with you one this one. That's all I'm gonna say.

Well vergil could always be brought back.
I'm pretty sure Kamiya could have done a nero-esque character or do a trish dpinoff.

@shadow sparda- So its not our fault people didnt accept nero because the way they brought him in was crap.

I agree on this 100%. I felt sorry for Nero.

look, we might be saying that the different protagonist per game notion is a great idea but w all love Dante. He has had more reshapings than any other character in gaming history but we still love the son of a witch, and despite his imperfections I wouldn't trade him for all the Kratos and all the master chiefs or all the witches in all the world. I guess that makes it allbthe worse that capcom just never seem to get it right.

But we aren't saying we want him to leave forever. Just not be in everything, seeing as they clearly can't think of good enough ways for him to be always the main character.

well if you consider the fact that dante and bayonetta have the same informant, Enzo, and the bangel of time and that braclet in bayonetta that said that it belonged to a powerful witch named Eva, dante's mom's name, then dante may infact be a son of a witch. but chances are those are just easter eggs and nothing more
