Anyone who enjoys Norse mythology?

Ya know, Odin, Thor, Frej, Freja, Jotuns, Giants, Ragnarok, etc.

Oh yeah, this topic is also for discussing Norse mythology if anyone would like.

Please refrain from comparing the topic to other similar topics such as other mythologies and religions.

I enjoy Norse mythology, yes. But it's not my strong point. My strong point in mythology is Greek.

Greek is well known. I don't really know Norse mythology other than Ragnorok, bits and peices of Odin and Thor...and a bit of the giants. :\

O...kay.

I'll edit this post with some information about it later.

You don't have to just for my sake. I can look it up on my own.

Aside from the facts of Norse mythology, can you elucidate the meaning of it? What are we meant to learn from it?

It's just a place to discuss. What you can learn of it is none of my business, if you take no interest in mythology and want to prove your point against that do that in another thread please.

I enjoy it. Particularly coming up with my own sculptural interpretations of characters from it. I'm working on a set of Loki's children at present as some of you may know, Fenrisulven, Hel and Jörmungandr.

Actually, I love Norse mythology, however, I'm much, much, much more knowledgeable in Greek (unintentional, blame high school) and Egyptian mythology (blame my fandom of original Yu-Gi-Oh!) more than Norse.

That said, I tend to base alot of my stories on Norse and Celtic mythos and my original drawings come off as a mix between goth, hardcore old school gangsta rap, and Norse aesthetics.

aside from the fact that odin and loki are two of the most overused screen names to date?

i know little bits. i know fenrir was some kind of wolf goddess. loki betrayed the other gods and brought about ragnarok, and for it he got some kind of agonizing eternal punishment. odins like the zeus of it all...
that's about as much i know. don't understand what the love for it is all about, unless you live in a country where it used to be followed.

Overused doesn't make the name Odin bad, or?

Fenrir is the slayer of Odin, I think Loki betrayed Odin with Fenrir in some way. Odin is like Zeuz but unlike what I've seen from Zeuz he got alot more "stuff" around him. His spear Gugnir, him lacking one eye and why, his two crows, his horse Sleipner, etc.

I used to hate norse mythology. Really really hate it. It is just recently I took up interest in it.

My love for mythology overall is because I can see how it's names, legends, etc, are commonly used in books, games and movies. Seeing the references and where they are from makes me feel more knowledgeable in the perspective of how human's past belief still remains, not as faith but more fictive.
There, now you know one reason why some love norse mythology. ^_^

Greek mythology has always been the main interest when talking mythology to me in the past. But the "style" greek mythology has have been tiring me out a little over time, I want to see more different kind of cultures and see them as well. These are past cultures after all. Cultures which fragments of is still used even today.

I like Greek mythology too if I was ever going to follow anything it would be that.

If I had more time on my hands I would get into it properly but the few stories I have read I really enjoyed.
Especially the ones about Zeus he certainly uhh...ahem...knew how to take advantage of his position.

I don't know much about Norse mythology though other than what I saw in Tomb Raider Underworld which I won't lean too heavily on as I am pretty sure there was a lot of distortion there.

i praise originality.

i don't dislike the names, but if i have 3 odins on my friends list on xbox live then i start thinking. associating yourself (online) with something that thousands of others do doesn't make you unique. it's about as profound as saying that war is a bad thing. it's not just the name odin, i think the same thing whenever i see a xXxGrImReApErxXx, 5n1p3rcr4zy, d4rkness3t3rnull etc. you know, using someone elses name in graffiti art is like committing a felony.

in any case, there's a definite opposite relationship with quantity and quality. they're in huge quantity, so you do the math.

i love my name because i have never, ever seen anyone else use it before.

interesting facts. i definitely know what you mean with all the references. odin has been a final fantasy summon forever, fenrir is the name of a werewolf in harry potter, and loki is a common name for a mischievous, chaos inducing, or double crossing character.

if you like interpreting norse mythology references you should read the manga Ragnarok. Ragnarok online was based on it and it was stopped at 10 volumes because the creator had to do work for the MMORPG. not a bad series with heavy norse mythology references.

it hasn't officially been ignored, but it's been on hiatus for 6 years if that tells you anything.

it's the only manga series i've ever bothered to buy (didn't know of online manga scans at the time).

Other people using it in their names over the internet makes the name shabbier? Many people do but still... as much as "Odin" has been used in games and in all those different variations showing their perspective of what Odin is kind of makes the name even better to me. All these creations that I know from different games gives an epic feel to the name Odin in my opinion.

Cool about the manga Ragnarok. But I don't read manga's.

Please forgive me for the audacity to dare to think that it would be ok for me to learn something beyond simple facts and arbitrary correspondences between them that could be found on Wikipedia. Let me just go burn all my books and return to my cave to stare at the shadows on my wall.

I have had a long standing interest in mythology, hence why I am asking if anyone has any intimation to the actual meaning of mythology rather than the fact of its existence. Myths are supposed to communicate something, not just be random people doing random stuff.

For instance, Odin hung himself in a tree for 3 days(?) to obtain the secret of the runes, implying an initiatory experience in which he had to sacrifice his old life to gain access to secret knowledge.

In any case, I wasn't forcing you or anyone else to frame their posts in a certain way. I was simply asking a question for the edification of people with such an interest, so that they could contemplate it themselves.

Oh alright, my bad then.

I think that Mythology somehow reflects how the life were at that epoc, plus a little wisdom too. Like Odin who hung himself for three days, to gain knowledge requires sacrifice.

Errr...I love Norse mythology. Especially Loki because he's such a real sh!tstirrer, plus he's a shapeshifter, and I lurv my shapeshifters. I can't say I like any of the other gods much, aside from Persephone and Hades, and Hel because she's a very grossly interesting image. Anyway, Norse mythos influenced a lot of my writing very heavily but if you're not clued up on it you wouldn't make the connection. I'm into the other mythologies too, like the Indian mythos, I think? With the Naga race. Being inspired by mythological beings is a very good way to avoid creating stereotyped characters in writing because often than not, people have never heard of this or that. Like werewolves, for example. The classic belief is that most are 'made' by being bitten, and you could never tell whether a person is one or not until a full moon. In (insert forgotten name here) mythology/folk tales, a werewolf is born with this morphing ability and carries a mark on their face, like a birthmark in a certain shape, that signifies their lineage.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm siding with the frost giants at Ragnarok. I hope they kick ass and take over all the other gods. :D
