New Dante: How is he an A-hole?

Both this and all other versions of Dante (except DMC 1 and 2 Dante, who had a smart mouth but was pretty gentlemanly) are assholes, but this Dante is an asshole with fewer immediate redeeming qualities. DMC3 and 4 Dante's assholishness came packaged with an obviously good heart; he was the kind of guy who refused to hurt anyone who wasn't evil or a real threat to him, even if they were trying to hurt him (i.e. Lady and Nero). He was stronger than basically everyone, knew it, and felt no need to exploit it.

DmC Dante? He bullies one guy who was just minding his business, and the other he attacks and mocks just to prove he can, both unarmed humans about as dangerous to him as a sneeze. He evidently enjoys having any little excuse to do violence, because he's just that angry. Clearly the point is him learning how to be a better person over the course of the game. DmC is Dante's first-ever redemption story, so he has to be a bigger asshole than he ever was before to make it a significant character shift.

(Can you imagine neo!Dante dealing with Lady, especially when she shot him? He would have throttled her on the spot. Which might explain why he's paired with a sweet ingenue like Kat instead of his usual aggressive fighting femme fatale. Classic!Dante didn't need softening up.)

Me, I'm not so happy that I'll probably be spending the early cutscenes wanting to punch this guy in the kidneys. I really want to see some inherent decency in him from the start (outside of angsting about his ridiculous life) before Vergil and Kat's influence make a man out of him, but what we've seen so far hasn't given me a lot of faith. Maybe I'll love him by the end of the game, maybe I'll just be relieved to be done with him. It's a toss up.

I'm guessing your gonna wanna kidney punch him in the begging due to the fact that he gives not one ****. It's not even inherent even or assholeness he literally just gives zero ****s about anything or anyone. I think that comes from the whole ridiculous past you mentioned. I think he will have no inherent goodness because he's never been treated with any. I think once he gets close with kat and vergil (before the unavoidable clash) he will learn what its like to care about someone and vice versa

Me, I'm not so happy that I'll probably be spending the early cutscenes wanting to punch this guy in the kidneys. I doubt Dante really knows how to act toward people. Being abused his whole life would make it difficult for a person to know how to tell someone they need to make a change in their lives, which is likely what he was doing when it came to the guy carrying the Virility can. Or, at least, that's how I saw it.

And since he's so strong, he probably could have put his fist through the bouncer's head, but didn't. From what I've seen others say here, Dante was there to find a way to free Kat, so anything that would slow him down would be met with hostility, hence why he punched the bouncer.

He's harsh, but that doesn't mean he's as bad as people keep making him sound. The way I see it, he has a good heart, but because of his life, doesn't know how to show it, or who he can allow close enough to actually let someone see he is a good person. A lot of people who are abused don't trust anyone, which is likely how this Dante is. As far as I'm concerned, he's mostly misunderstood.

I think you're right, and that's what worries me. All other versions of Dante had a core of decency thanks to the love of his parents and his brother, and in the one other version where he doesn't remember his family, he had friends and partners who meant a lot to him from the start. But this one seems like he's gonna have to build decency from the ground up during the game itself. Which isn't what made me love Dante as a protagonist so much in the past, so I don't know if I'll be a fan by the end.

Maybe it's just me, but if he really doesn't know how not to slap things out of the hands of random strangers on the street, then he's a sociopath and no amount of rescuing Kat will fix that.

But yeah, I agree he's an okay person deep underneath all the assholishness - otherwise he'd actually be a murdering terrorist who kills people rather than punches them - but it's much less readily apparent than it was in his previous incarnations. We all know he'll get better as the game progresses, but for at least a portion of it, we'll be playing as this douchebag. I'm not questioning how realistic it is for him to be this way - he has the same good reasons to be nasty as classic!Dante did - only that I dislike it. I think the game could have done without the two random acts of douchery we've seen so far and probably most of the rest that inevitably come up; it just makes the protagonist unpleasant without adding anything to him, to me. Unless some people think it makes him more interesting, which is a fair preference. It's just not my thing.

I can understand that. Chances are they included those scenes to show that he does care in some sense, but isn't exactly gentle about it. At least you know he will change.

It's all in how you look at it. I'd rather it not be so obvious since I tend to analyze characters. It makes it more fun, for me, to get small hints. And it tends to mean more when the character does something sweet after being such a douche to everyone else.

I think you will like him by the end but it will make reseeing cutscenes of him in the beggining all the harder since youll prefer whatever character developed badass he finishes

But I think we want his gruffness a bit in the end. They say there is a sequel coming of course.
We don't want him to become too shallow that was a mistake in the classic series.

this assumes the game sells enough for capcom to make a sequel

I've gotten drunk at a bar and had to fight a bouncer before with the help of my friend (got my ass kicked too, but since i was drunk ;) i walk away like a boss) LOL ALSO! i wouldn't call it an orgy but... i've had my three some and it wasn't all it was cracked out to be, but the beginning was very interesting. HAHAHA It's not like me and Dante are the same in any sense, but it is possible to have the same experiences. And saying f**k you doesn't mean your trying to sound cool. When i was younger my mom would call me by my full name and say "get the f**k over here, now!" i wasn't like "your so cool mom" i was rather afraid for my life! I hear cursing at my house, at my work, at the malls, with random people i talk to.

This Dante fits his universe just fine. If i were him, i would probably have the same agenda. Especially in his teen years.

And when Dante knocks the can out of the fat guys hand, well good for him. I work with a girl who's grandfather died of lung cancer and she cannot stand that i smoke. I'm sure if i could smoke indoors, she would smack me and knock the fag right out my mouth. Is she the asshole then? I wouldn't think so. And the bouncer didn't even ask his name or anything, he just said your not on the list. He's a big guy talking down to a small teen. To bad for him, this teen was half angel and demon and ****ed off.

A lot of you said you need to make Dante a pretty unlikable person so his arch will be that much more better, and i agree. A lot of you really dislike how he's acting, some of you wanted him to be a mute (which he was in the first trailer but that could be because there wasn't a voice actor for his part) I think he needs to have some sense of humor and not be a mute and then just randomly become a guy who cracks jokes.

it's very clear that Ninja dante is going to be an asshole, if you read the interviews at

http://www.edge-online.com/features/interview-alex-garland-part-two

"I guess if I were to make a criticism it would relate to character and consistency. Making sure characters are true to themselves, and true to some kind of larger truth, which relates to the recipients of the narrative. That is to say, the player. Us. For example, I think the first serious discussion we had about the narrative was on the very first day that I, Tameem and the level designers all sat down together. We got to a section where Monkey was walking down a walkway, and he sees an escaping slave trying to pull himself up to the walkway. And instead of helping the guy up, Monkey kicked him in the face and sent him to his death. They thought that projected the idea that Monkey was a badass. Whereas, to me, it projected the idea that Monkey was a bit of a c*nt."

and before you try to defend them with heavenly sword they didn't even write the script for it, Rhianna Pratchett had to completely rewrite it. as shown here: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2007/09/rhianna-pratchett-talks-heavenly-sword-sony-and-andy-serkis/

so by the end of the discussion that idea was scrapped because that scene wasn't in the game at all.

New/Old Dante is an asshole when he is young. And then New/Old Dante becomes something more special. As for DmC is yet to be seen, but the transition seems to be pretty obvious. As for Old Dante, um... he has different personalities, some are assholes, some are campy, some are drones

When he knocks the can out of the guy's hand it's because the drink is poisonous and he's doing the man a favor. Dante isn't doing it because he's being a jerk.

And I agree with what you said. you've lived the life of a Dante, kinda.

"Watching cutscenes and playing the first five missions, its clear this is a different character from the one seen in trailers and clips so far. Creative Director Tameem Antoniades agrees during a post-play chat, acknowledging short, punchy teasers are unable to capture all sides of the personality.

"So the swearing match between Dante and the succubus seen at the Gamescom demo is one of the rare times the new guy drops the f-bomb. For the most, he's a more serious take on the character, intense but quiet, laid back. Cocky, sure, but not aggressively so."

"Much like 343's done with Master Chief in Halo 4, Ninja Theory's worked in some impressive cut-scenes that dig into Dante's psyche without alienating the core of the character. Fantastic mo-cap performances and scripting making these a real joy to watch. Vergil, Dante's brother (who he's meeting for the first time again) is particularly fun, a warm yet reserved performance, that has you waiting with baited breath for the eventual fallout you know is coming."

I don't think he's a A-hole as some people are judging just with some trailers...

I would have to say Dante had it a bit more rough than mine. Granted my daddy wasn't there, but i actually had a good life lol

SO this Dante doesn't say **** you that much in the game? Good. Now that's another complaint laid to rest.

and one of my biggest things keeping me from buying this game.

I don't see the problem with people saying f*ck. It's the single most used swear word in the world (the English speaking ones at least) and it is natural to express your anger with swear words. Humans aren't meant to be the civilized people that prudes are trying to force on everyone.

Also, I find it funny that Dante has said it just a few times in some footage and then people assume that he says it all the time. Talking about jumping to conclusions. XD

This is the problem with "F*** you".
