Even in scenarios where the developers made a concious decision to keep the grind the same from the previous game... The mere existence of MTs that impact that grind can make customers doubt their intentions.
If someone plays an RPG with a grind and there are no MTs, then they know that was just the direction of the game. If there are MTs that multiply your exp gain, then it's only natural that the person may question it. With publishers constantly pushing the boundaries, with loot boxes, on disk DLCs, DLC popups, etc... I'm not surprised at all when progression modifiers are scrutinized as well.
