Well yes, basically every character to date has been rehashed and done, I'll give you that much. But calling one dull does not necessarily mean you're calling the rest of the flock dull as well. Likeability/criticism of said character and his personality also depends on the plot and his motives. It's an accepted fact, yet, in examples case, people still make music, and there are always people who will love it.
As is the case with characters like Vergil, it's been done before yes, quite often infact, but there are people who will always still love it, it's also the same with Dante, he's a generic, cocky badass. but people still love his character.
Vergil will never be a dull character, because if people call him dull, they're calling 75% of antagonists in the last decade dull, which just isn't true, look at the fanbases.
