I presume you are talking about Bleach? Hard to tell, the way Kubo talks about Soul Society it seems to be the only part of afterlife with some order in it and power to affect world as whole, even though human world clearly has all the other countries and there should be some part where non-Japanese people go that isn't operating on a culture of old Japan.

To be fair, you forget everything from when you were alive once you're in SS so it's not like language or culture matters.

That little kid that Chad saved didn't forget. Neither did the dead Fullbringers. It's also a very horrible idea, that every other culture is erased save for Japanese one.

Its a possibility the more recent your death was, the more likely you are to remember your previous life. Unless you were reborn in soul society.

I saw some good ideas for it on the BLEACH TVtropes page so it got me thinking....

The more plausible explanation would be that Tite Kubo's a ****ty writer.

Honestly, by the end of the manga I'd be suprised if Kubo remembers a lot of the early rules he set like forgetting about your past life. The Fullbringers remembering theirs was hardly the first contradiction plotwise.

Asgard and Mt Olympus are Soul Societies of sorts...but sadly none with a pervy scientist equivalent to Mayuri. :(
