It's pretty clear to me from the way she moves and fights (for example, during the fight with Ren, she makes slow awkward thrusts and stumbles), that Rey received no combat training and just knows what she needs to survive in the streets. Kylo was clearly the more trained and skilled fighter and Force user.

Right. And doesn't matter that he was physically weakened from Chewbacca's blast, or emotionally and psychologically weakened from killing his own father just moments before the fight?

Well he did fight pretty well against Finn with that wound, someone who showed to be a more trained fighter than Rey. He even goes as far as to bet himself in that wound, in sign of mocking.

I'm sorry but I really don't agree with those points, and I've never quite understood the problem or what's so hard to believe about that outcome. Looks like we'll have to leave it here.

Finn and Rey in terms of combat looked about the same level. The only advantage Rey had was the force. It was the only thing she could use to defend herself from Ren, and she did. That's about it really.

Unfortunately I did understand why that outcome is nonsensical, and all those people screaming "Rey is a Mary Sue!" to the high heavens. I thought they were exaggerating, given how these things go with fans, but I can't say they were wrong.

Actually Finn, whenever used that lightsaber, did look like he knew what he was doing with it to some degree. Unlike Ren, he never made awkward, weak thrusts or stumbled.

Yes, and you might put that down to being trained in the military.

I've just given you lots of reasons as to why they're wrong, but believe what you wish. I'm no longer replying.

Foxtrot94
And I've given you lots of reasons as to why your reasons don't hold up, no offense.
LordOfDarkness
LordOfDarkness
Actually, you didn't. You just merely repeated the same things that everyone who has complained about Rey has said before. The same stuff I've given lots of points against.
Foxtrot94
Foxtrot94
Come on man. What kinda argument is that. Then I can say you just repeated everything people defending Rey have said to those complaining about Rey. Just because some other people said it before doesn't make it any less valid. I've disproven your points by analizing the movie's own scenes, not by googling Rey haters' comments.
LordOfDarkness
LordOfDarkness
You've disproven my opinion? Huh, funny, didn't know someone could do that.

I mean, if you don't agree with me, believe what you wish, as you said, but let's not resort to these petty tricks to try and belittle each other's points.

I didn't google anything. Please don't insult my intelligence.

LordOfDarkness
As I said man, I'm done discussing it.

I didn't say you googled stuff. I said I got the impression you thought I went googling arguments from Rey's haters since you implied my points aren't valid cause they have said it before. Which I would consider an insult to MY intelligence, since it would mean you don't think I'm able to reason with my own head.

Longtime Star Wars fan, and TFA was really a disheartening disappointment for me. I didn't hate it or love it--& that alone shows what's wrong w/ it. It's so barebones and derivitive that it illicits no strong response from me, and that's a disappointing prospect for a franchise I'm so passionate for. And as someone w/ relative knowledge on the SW Universe, I can definitely agree w/ everything @Foxtrot94 mentioned.

Also, referring to @LordOfDarkness on "using the Force whilst wielding a lightsaber"...yeah, that doesn't exist. The closest thing to that in SW lore is Battle Meditation, a technique to amplify speed, confidence or agility for small bursts of time. Qui-Gon does this between ray shields when combating Maul in PM, and he still loses. You know why? Because Battle Meditation CANNOT amplify skill or combat prowess.

And before anyone starts the whole "b-but Rey wields a staff, so that's basically the same as lightsaber training"...just stop and watch Savage Opress' training. He trained w/ melee weapons all his life, even wielded a Staff as his first Sith tool, but when it came to first time lightsaber training w/ Dooku, he was clumsy and crude with it. Why? Because melee finesse DOES NOT translate to lightsaber prowess.

The whole point of saber combat is that it's a skill leagues above normal fighting, which is why only disciplined warriors like Jedi or Sith can do it...otherwise anything from a Wookie to a rabid Tusken Raider would be able to pick up a saber and wield it efficiently just because they wield staffs or Gaffi sticks. That's NEVER how lightsabers have worked.
