Same here - my parents were dirt poor when me and my sis were growing up so it was one gift at Christmas, sometimes shared, and nothing more. But it was a present we appreciated sooo much because we knew it would have cost my parents so much to get it for us. We never had the latest whatever, but we didn't care - I'd rather that than tons of gifts and no concept of gratitude or understanding what it costs to give out of what little you can afford.
For the first 4 years of Jessica's life she only got gifts (apart from those silly relatives) from charities because I didn't have anything to give her - it was a choice between eating, heating or presents so food and warmth came first  I remind her that she is very lucky now, since I met Steve, because we can afford the things we need and to be grateful for what she does have - she still remembers relying on aid parcels from the Salvation Army and places like that. I won't let her forget it either.
