Only recently been looking into this and Rust but both have a great concept that intrigues me, my laptop wont run either of them I bet but when I get a PC these are the sort of games that will top my list of first purchases. Games like these that have great attention to detail, realism and genuine challenge intrigue me far more than games with flashy GFX and recycled gameplay that seem to be churned out left right and center.

DayZ
is only still in Alpha (so still glitchy) and for anyone who doesnt know it is an Arma2 mod which has just recently received a standalone release also but its basically a zombie survival game. Most of you will likely roll your eyes at yet another zombie game but this has a twist, if you die you lose everything and have to create a new character. Players can be robbed of equipment by others and its a constant fight for survival and supplies as you even have to eat and sleep.

Dean Hall will step down as leader of the hit zombie survival game DayZ by the end of the year it has been announced. He will be starting his own studio in his home country of New Zealand, where he'll continue to attempt to create that elusive, perfect multiplayer game.

I am a grenade, I have a specific use. I'm really good at risk-taking and making other people take risks, I've always been good at that in my life. Like you say, maybe I've got the gift of the gab, so I can talk, I can explain something, I can talk people up to the ledge and get them to jump off it. That's what I did with DayZ; I've done it twice now [once with the mod, again with the standalone] - two new code teams have separately done it. "But eventually, that's the bad person to have. Eventually, you don't want the guy telling you to go over the top and get through. So at some point I'll be a disaster for the project, at least in a leadership role.

DayZ doubles size of development team, cooking system in the works

The DayZ development team at Bohemia Interactive is being doubled in size, a post to the game’s development blog reveals.

DayZ creator Dean “Rocket” Hall wrote the post himself, detailing several fixes and new systems that will be added to the game soon. Earlier this week, he announced that he plans to step down as the head of the popular open-world survival game before the end of this year, and will start a new studio in New Zealand.

The most interesting addition to the game revealed in the post is a new cooking system. “Heavily inspired by the outstanding cooking system in Project Zomboid, this will be part of a wider push in March to focus on Survival aspects of the game in general,” Hall said.

The cooking system will allow you to turn your cooking device on (a fireplace or stove) and then place items in it. Items will slowly heat up and become “cooked” when they reach the required heat, or become something else, like soup. “We're very excited by the possibilities for this system,” Hall said.

The team is also implementing several bug fixes, adding new animations, and improving stability. Finally, Hall said that there is much more going on, and that we’ll see a roadmap for the rest of the year “very soon.”

Dean Hall, the creator of popular zombie game DayZ, has spoken out to clear up some confusion about the recently announced console version. Though Hall announced DayZ for PlayStation 4 during Sony's Gamescom briefing yesterday, the game is by no means exclusive to that console. "DayZ is not exclusive to any platform," Hall said on Twitter.

His tweet came in response to a fan who said exclusive games from third-party developers are "inherently anti-consumer" and "make no sense" in 2014. Hall said, "I agree," suggesting we're likely to see DayZ come to other platforms, including potentially Xbox One, down the road.

In fact, Hall revealed earlier this year that he had met with Microsoft and "extensively" discussed a possible Xbox version of DayZ. However, it remains to be seen if DayZ will be a timed-exclusive for PS4, or if Hall only agreed to announce the game at Sony's briefing.

The was no mention of a release date for the DayZ console port yesterday--or even any footage from the game at all. Based on previous comments from Hall, we might not see the console version for some time. He said in February that no console version of the zombie game was in development at the time, and explained that it would take about a year to make the game.

It's clear, though, that the PC version of DayZ will not be forgotten. Hall said developer Bohemia Interactive is "acutely aware of how important the PC version is to us." He also noted that the studio "didn't want to just port DayZ" to consoles, but wants to take advantage of each platform's respective strengths.

I had one hell of a run with my last character in DayZ, shot in the face, yet survived, fell off a building, broke my legs and crawled across the entire map until I was able to splint my legs, then found loads of guns, food and ammo, then a military tent and was in the process of building my own little base camp, then got shot in the face by some kid with a Derringer.

What a session that was lol.

Sounds like you had some pretty bad luck but an experience none the less.

Some significant updates have been coming lately from what I have researched (dont have a PC or the game yet) but I am liking the direction its going and good to see what plans they have for next year. By time I get the game there would have been some more BIG updates.

There is a website out there where people document all their experiences & deaths like that and its fascinating to read some of them, will try and find it again and post it. Think that is what peaked my interest with this, The Forest and Rust, its all about the experiences and interactions with others that make the game.

Shades of Daryl Dixon on the right hand side, thats some collection but shame about lack of ammo.
The sad part was I couldn't bring any of them with me, I just found a Mosin 9130 with 8 rounds that could carry in my hands so it's something, as for the crossbow I have a crafted Bow already, suck it Lara and Ellie!

You enjoying the game even though its still in very early alpha then? You have many friends who play it or you tend to play it alone? You excited for the future of the game and all the updates they have outlined so far, what are you most excited for if so?

I mostly play solo since none of my friends play DayZ but my little brother does and we partner up sometimes mostly to carry more stuff lol.
I'm loving the game, put 79 hours into it so far and playing it right now as we speak, my current goals in the game are:
- Find a Tent
- Set up base camp
- Find Vehicle
- Don't get shot in the face again.

A few of my favorite things of DayZ right now is it's barricade system, hunting system and character health, I love using the lockpick to lock up a building and then start a camp fire on the upper floor to keep my character warm and cook up meat that I got from hunting the wild animals.

I think more vehicles and base building is what I'm looking forward to most, I just wanna build my own little camp and survive for as long as I can.

I think some of the possibilities of the game when the features are fleshed out some more and more systems are incorporated are fascinating. Heard they have tested higher player & zombie numbers too while improving the server architecture of the game and stability as well as more weather effects to hinder players which could make for some interesting camp scenarios to survive. I know zombies are still a little broken but they have a whole team dedicated to getting them sorted now I believe as well as whole sections of the team who are concentrating on different parts of the game.

Hoping to get some friends and forum members of multiple forums of ours together at some point on it when I have it myself.

I'm currently in a server with loads of players, just heard a few zombies screaming and gunshots firing close by just now so I went into hiding.
The zombies have been fixed a little, they don't clip through walls that much anymore, but stealth killing them with knifes isn't an option anymore since they notice you when you get close, behind or not.
The loot system has been done up really well too, when I first started playing finding the cool guns was merely lucky spawns, but now you only get the good stuff in the rare locals, like the military assault rifles only spawn at the helicopter crash sites(I still haven't found one of them yet) and other weapons like the shotguns spawn in farm areas and the like.

The crafting system is awesome too, crafting makeshift backpacks, bows, arrows and the like, something I want for the crafting is being able to craft your own tent.

Yeah the zombies still need work (watched many YouTube videos of them) and they will be fixed eventually but as their numbers arent high at moment and they arent main threat they arent a priority at the moment from what I read. Good that the clipping through walls and attacking players through the floor has mostly been fixed though and their pathfinding is far better as that looked incredibly frustrating. Hoping they incorporate a decent stealth system eventually too so stealth is a viable option. Heard they really improved the spawns and the risk/reward nature of venturing into high risk areas like the helicopter crash sites and military buildings/airfields. The crafting seems to get better and better all the time and I really like some of the ideas they have had lately. Also liking the new updated physics systems and animations which are going to be improved again soon. I try to keep as up to date with things as I can and follow the developers on Twitter and many DayZ fanpages.

I haven't found enough players to see how the hit detection works, but the last time I was killed(by that kid with the derringer) I must have emptied 5 shotgun shells into his body at point blank range and he didn't die, yet one shot from him and I'm dead, he died from blood lose after I died though.

Also the weapon I'm looking forward to most is the chainsaw.

I think that's enough DayZ for tonight lol.

It can be to do with bandwidth & connection sometimes and registering the server input back and forth between players. It has gotten far better from reports I have read but still needs some work but as early alpha title thats to be expected. At least some of your shots DID register, hence him bleeding to death afterwards but might have been some input lag so not all connected as they looked to you. Had this a few times in past on games where I was behind someone and unloaded clip into them only for them to disappear and appear behind me and one shot kill me. To me on my end they were still in front of me with back to me but seconds earlier they had actually moved but server hadnt relayed this to me.

At least they have improved server architecture and spawns and also the frames per second in big towns as I heard that was quite an issue for a while with even people on powerful rigs having huge FPS drops. Saw them test a 100 person server and upped zombie count to hundreds too successfully for the test too.
