i just had a conversation with a few friends and we were on the topic of the last two superman films and we saw that after each movie complaint people kept saying "we want something new" but once they got it, all they did was try their best to tear it down. same with the new 52. people bitched and moaned about the comics getting dry (myself included) and then the new 52 came out and changed everything. and all people do now is hate on the new 52. same with other things like getting a new order from your favorite restaurant or asking for a new spice in the relationship. so the question that i wanted to discuss with you guys is "do people really want something new"

I'm honestly not sure. I think people at the time say they want something new, but when the something new happens, maybe these people feel nostaligc for the old thing. :/ Or maybe the new thing is not what they expected, or exactly how they wanted, so they decide the old thing is a better option.

There is a difference between change and good change. People like the latter.

i get THAT, but its just...when people ASK for change and they get it (typically in the comic book and movie community) they gripe and moan over what they asked for. like SR. people kept suggesting that superman should do something new. and one of the main suggestions that EVERYBODY and their mother talked about was superman having a son. superman returns comes out and thats the main reason why people hate the movie. same with spider-man. after spider-man 3, people bitched and pleaded for a less complex plot, less villains, and more of a love story. they got that with the amazing spider-man. now all they do is gripe about it. so i'm just really confused in that regard

they gripe and moan over what they asked for.
I second that i loved Prometheus it was probably the best sci-fi movie i've seen in quite a while it actually had me interested from the start and yet you can find legions of fanbabies bitching and moaning about how it sucks and how it doesn't connect to aliens as a prequel.

And i'm also in the minority of people who actually enjoyed Superman Returns&Spiderman 3 i think crybabies will always be present everywhere in the fanbase lol

I don't mind change as long as its done right and, if possible, retain a couple of characteristics from its predecessors. That's just a preference.

It is strange that people complain about wanting change, get what they asked for, then complain some more. People are hard to please I guess.

Well when I say something new, I mean ENTIRELY new and original, not something ENTIRELY new and different in a beloved franchise I'm a fan of.
All I want from a franchise I'm a fan of is what I became a fan of in the first place. Innovation is a massive bonus.

The kind of NEW I want is like Beyond 2 Souls and what Naughty Dog does so well, Beyond 2 Souls is a fully story focused game, but it's an entirely new IP so I have no reason to get mad at it because it's not ruining anything I became a fan of and because of that I can happily look forward to the game, same with the original IPs Naughty Dog makes, they're something new and original.

but ya see. thats the thing. you can't do something entirely different to please those who want something different while maintaining a **** ton of material from the original franchise. you can't reboot superman and have marlon brando be jor-el (well that and brando's dead of course), you can't reboot 007 and have specter be the main villain again, you can't reboot DmC and have the anime badass with the same origins as the original. when you do something different, GO DIFFERENT!!! but thats hard because in doing so you alienate your old fanbase. so i guess in a way...we shouldn't reboot stuff. just let it die...?

As for Superman and 007, I'm not a super fan of those, however I don't like what the 007 series has turned into, it's boring as f**k now, I loved it back when there was the Aston Martin with rocket launchers, the fancy laser watches and that freakishly big guy with the metal teeth. As for Superman, well he's still got the superpowers and the iconic look, so a casual fan like me has nothing to be mad about. Same goes for Batman.

I wouldn't want to let the franchises die, but the way things are being rebooted today, yes I'd rather see my favorite franchises die being what they're meant to be rather than live on as something I'll loathe. I'd rather have happy memories than a horrible reality. Plus with them gone, it'll open the doors to more new IPs, meaning something actually new.

The only reboot I would ever consider looking at positively is a Resident Evil reboot, because really how could they f**k it up anymore than they already have?

RE is just that thing that has to die

With the movie i think the problem was that it wasn't a take that people liked because they see it as selling out and turning him grim and gritty and even calling it the "bat of steel" because they tried too hard to be Chris Nolan's Batman.

Rather than trying to find a new take that was uniquely Superman, they just jumped on the bandwagon to some people.

the reboot is another discussion.
