The History of Ivory & Ebony

The anime was EXPLICITLY stated by DMC4 director Kobayashi to be canon, and since the anime references the first novel by mentioning outright that Dante once went by the name Tony in his youth, and the strawberry Sundaes, YES, the first novel is canon, Nell Goldstein made Ebony and Ivory, and Dante's modified them since her death. DMC3 never said he made them himself, only that they were homemade. I'd call Nell custom building them from scratched homemade.

And it has been confirmed again and again that Kobayashi don't have his **** together.

Neither does Capcom since 2007, honestly, but both he and Itsuno both have confirmed the Anime counts, and btw, none of them have every said "the kamiya era novels don't count", so, until that is actually said officaly by the writing or directing staff, people are just ASSUMING that they're out of continuity, because there are still references in the games and anime to the first novel and to Dante being once called Tony Redgrave.

I know dude, but the novel being canon = MANY plotholes and contradictions, so... better to assume Kobayashi doesn't care much about canon

TO be fair, every game has had plot holes in continuity with previous games. DMC3 and DMC1 have some of the biggest since according to DMC1, Dante had not seen Vergil since 20 years ago, when Eva was killed, while DMC3 says they ran into each other a year prior to it's events, and seem to have been encountering over the years. The Novel ctually aligned exactly with DMC1, which was the only game at the time, it was DMC3 that seems to have introduced some inconsitancies, and you can actually explain them away easily.

yeh if vergil was acting really weird for ordinary then dante could easily have written him of as corrupted and decided it was not properly him
