I would say its better than DmC's story in the sense the villains have better monologues and are better at playing on his faults so it feels like a better character study on what makes Raiden a anti-hero. That moment with Sam as he forces Raiden to listen to the regrets of all of those he has slain was masterful.

Hell even the final boss as cartoony as he was did a better job at convincing me on his ideals and why he fights than mundus ever did.

since when do villain monologues make them anything other than generic, i cringed at a little girl being able to build a flying plane, its just too anime for me

Pain and pleasure... I've got it all.
Finished it and i had more fun with it then DmC that's for sure. Game managed to make me feel badass and gave me some laughs at the same time, boss fights were fun and somewhat challenging and dear lord the music was amazing.

Final boss made me cringe so hard that i folded up inside myself until he stopped talking though.

Whether or not its generic or anime-ish doesn't matter, what matters is whether or not its an effective tactic in getting a point across.

part of having a compelling plot is making characters with depth, less than half the characters in this game have depth, evne raiden's reasons for doing what he's doing are convoluted and the villains are all bland archetypes with accents for the sake of having accents

Isn't this every single metal gear game lol. And Raiden's reasons weren't that convoluted in this game because he was out for revenge against the organization that blew up his whole PMC mission (killed the PM and severely injured Raiden), and also even more invested after learning about
the children being harvested for cyborg brains, then being trained to be killers at such a young age like he was
. So his reasons aren't convoluted really. The support staff get fleshed out a lot more in codec convos, but the particular funny and interesting characters are the doctor and blade wolf. Sam seemed like the most fleshed out "villian" and can't wait to play his DLC campaign, and the end boss is pretty hilarious character. DmC had a more focused narrative, but because of that the only characters that stood out were Kat and Dante. Mundus wasn't interesting, Lilith was more of a plot device, and Vergil ended up being a huge disappointment. It seems from what I saw of Vergil's downfall that Vergil actually becomes a character in that DLC campaign, but I wish that was reflected in the main game.

Kojima didn't write this game's script as the lead writer was some dude named Etsu Tamari. It's like a bad anime and sure as hell doesn't do anything freaking special or memorable unlike I don't know, every other Metal Gear game. Even MGS 2, while not the best, was still memorable as hell. Rising is still a Metal Gear game and that's a cruel fact I have to accept. Devil May Cry fans have been ridiculous upset with hardly any real reason. I think as a Metal Gear fan I have every right to be p!ssed off about a game that doesn't live up whatsoever to the Metal Gear standard.

I may hate the character of Raiden with a passion as I think he's the worst freaking character in the Metal Gear series but, I was never against a Cyborg Ninja game. (especially if it was Gray Fox) When I heard Rising was coming years ago I wasn't so against it because Kojima was on board directly and it was bridging the gap between MGS 2 and 4. My friends and I speculated what kind of things could be revealed on Raiden's side of the fence even if we don't like the character. We were actually kind of hyped for it knowing damn well it was going to be a Raiden centric game so don't say I'm narrow minded. I really enjoy shows like My Little Pony Friendship is Magic so I'm not so quick to judge sh!t rashly.

My hype began to diminish when Kojima cancelled the project. Oh well. Then P* picks it up and my hope diminishes even more. I don't think P* is a good company because everything they push out it never beyond the decent mark. I don't give a f*ck if Kamiya works there. One man does not make up a company and what was he responsible for previously? The should have been a porn game Bayonetta. Some of my favorite developers are companies like Rockstar. P* is honestly not great whatsoever and I feel as if they are a company that actually just doesn't care about their projects because they are always dishing out lackluster titles. MadWorld is their best title simply because I love comic books and the style of MadWorld was just really cool. Gameplay was ehh but the style of it was enough that I tolerated the motion controls. Still lackluster.

I may hate Raiden but that's not the reason why I hate Rising. It's because this is part of my favorite gaming series of all time even though it's a spinoff and doesn't live up to being anything that makes Metal Gear so special. Metal Gear has been a series that has been memorable as hell with the best boss fights and characters that were unlike anything I've ever played. Rising does nothing special or worthwhile and just looks like another one of P*'s anime lackluster hack n slashers. I'll gladly wait for my Ground Zeroes while some people out there can enjoy this short lived slasher. I like Devil May Cry and I enjoy both this new direction and the previous. I don't however, like some game than is Metal Gear in no way shape or form really taking away what makes Metal Gear also so special to its fans. Rising just seems like a generic anime. And yes I will use that term again because while I love anime, I like good ones. This game is nothing to write home about so I'll go back to playing the masterpiece that is MGS 3: Snake Eater and wait for Big Boss's return with Ground Zeroes. The only character I actually care about in this game is Sunny because I like her and I wonder if now she knows how to make some goddamn eggs perfectly now. I heard she builds space shuttles though so maybe she did learn how to cook.

Just been scanning through the thread so dont know if its been mentioned but Kojima wanted Gray Fox to be the star of Rising but his team said no.

Kojima: 'It was actually not my idea, it was my staff in Kojima Productions that insisted on Raiden, and I respected their idea. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game. I want to pass game development to the younger generation in my team, and have been trying to do so for quite some time. Before I never could give complete responsibilities for other games, but for Revengeance, they are fully in control. Besides, if I had created the game and directed it, it wouldn't have been this game.'

Yea, I knew all about this and it's a shame we didn't get the Gray Fox game. It probably wouldn't have been all hack n slash either because Kojima has a thing for stealth and there is more to Frank Jaeger than just Gray Fox.

... Is that a hidden pun I see there? XD

Ahhhh! You got me you observant bugger

Sir Alfred Hitchcock once said that “a good film should start with an earthquake and be followed by rising tension”.
Well i have to say it is also true for good games!
