Kamiya's return to Capcom is certainly a surprise, and I believe it only happened because Capcom want a future for the Devil May Cry series but aren't confident in it being done without Itsuno. This leads me to believe Capcom reached out to Kamiya and asked if he'd be interested in directing a Devil May Cry remake, and Kamiya being the type of guy he is, likely said something along the lines of "Only if you let me make Okami 2 first" and Capcom gave the request a thumbs up.

I don't think Kamiya has any interest in characters like Nero, and he has expressed interest in remaking Devil May Cry 1 with modern graphics a few years ago. Capcom also have seen great success with the Resident Evil remakes and I also think it would probably be easier for Capcom to remake DMC1 than create a Devil May Cry 6

Let me know your thoughts.

Despite fan backlash, Itsuno and Capcom as a whole was supportive of NT's take on DmC so it's not like they would force Kamiya to use Nero.

it feels likely but it's just as likely he would just do a new DMC game and not use Nero or the others.

or he could actually like the new additions and do a new game with them.

So a return to DMC is likely but what it would look like is anyone's guess.

On Twitter, Kamiya also talked about building up new creators with the new iteration of Team Clovers. So its possible the new director of DMC6 might come from the DMCR dev team.

I've said this before, but the early days of Dante and Trish's partnership would be prime retail for Kamiya to explore his vision of a Dante that is closer in vibe to DMC1 without having to deal with all the later stuff.

I'm curious what Kamiya's take on DMC2 would've been like.

So letting Kamiya do his own sequel would be cool.

they could follow @Lain's lead and let both versions happen.

Nero sucks and became even worse in 5 imo
You know, I think the reboot is the best thing that ever happened to Nero. Nero was always kind of the red headed stepchild in the series but when the reboot came to pass he suddenly became a much more acceptable entity, as it were. I've always known that they'd try to substitute Dante with Nero and they haven't been coy or underheated about it. They flat out said that that's what they wanted. Nero is not a bad character but he's never been leading man material. It'd be different if every DMC game had a different protagonist and he was the one of his own game but he's replacing one of Capcom's most popular character (edit: and that's a recorded fact after they did their official poll, which I think it's a huge reason we're getting a new OniMusha and Ōkami) and they he really isn't up for it. He's got a great voice actor, a solid presence and good material but his shortcomings keep him from being as appealing or charming a character as Dante is at his best.

I think a remake is necessary to update the current canon, but I don’t see Kamiya playing or reading the other games, novels, manga, or anime to make DMC6. By the time it happens, more than 25 years will have passed since DMC1, and I find it difficult to believe he could retain Dante’s psychology from that time or acknowledge the importance of Trish, as portrayed in Sacred Heart, Kaitai Shinsho, or Trinity of Fates.

I would have preferred Itsuno to stay as the leader of this saga (even though he made a mess with the lore in DMC5) because he has experience with the characters and the series.

Kamiya said he loved Devil May Cry 3 and he played the demo of 4 as soon as it became available. I assume he's played 5. I think he would do a better job than Itsuno.

I don't think you would need to add much from the other games besides Vergil's expanded characterization from 3.

To be fair, kamiya can just use the multiverse or branching path theory. Have his game be a follow up to 1 and 2, but in a different universe with different choices meaning no nero or any of the events of 4 or 5.

He could even bring back Drew Coombs as dante if he wanted, since reuben is gone from the role.

I think Reuben will return someday

I don't think it has to be that complicated. DMC has always been standalone and jumped all over the place. It doesnt have an overarching plot like other franchises. Plus Kamiya was the one who pushed for DMC3 to be a prequel instead of Bingo or Itsuno.

So I could just see Kamiya doing what he wants and they'll sort it out later.

With so much established lore he would alienate a large chunk of the fanbase, if he does what he wants with the current canon. That is why it is better to start over from 1 and 2 which he could remake, then do his own take on it from there.

He and itsuno are very different, so his ideas for how 6 would go may be super out of character for the lore as it is now.

I just never saw Capcom as really caring that much about what's canon. I just expect they would do their own thing as that's what they've done before.
