It took such a massive scale after the release of DmC (or little earlier). I can swear, if the poll about worse DMC was created in 2010 DMC 3 and 4 would get less votes than DMC 2 and even DMC 1. No really, just look at DMC4 metacritic user score. Lot of people love this game despite backtracing and generic story. Then. But now it's cool to hate DMC4 and love DmC. Mainstream. Generation of Call of Duty and "press X to win"...

i think it depends on what you're looking for.
*a laid back game with a nice story...DMC4 is bad for you then.
*a hard hitting game with in depth gameplay with everything else as an after thought...DmC is bad for you
*DMC2 is just bad
*DMC1 is a classic that aged pretty well so its good.
but in my opinion DMC4 is the worst. even though DMC2 was bad, DMC4 was just boring to me. it was colorful and had great gameplay but i found myself not wanting to play it sometimes.

Every DMC is bad for this. Because DMC 1\3 a pretty hard. Not to much, but they are definitely not a "laid back" game. DmC is laid back, but nice story...seriously? All that "demonz controll humanity" is example of nice story? >_<

yeah. i totally dig "illuminati" type of movies. couple that with my favorite videogame character and its a win.

But all story it's just one big collection of cliche. Poisoning by drinks, zombied by TV, enslave by banking system. Sadly they forget about some demon interpretation of Justin Bieber, with the point that he possessed the humans souls. >_<

i'm not so sure original dante had a high moral either. all he wanted to do was get paid and have some thrills. plus in DmC kat does mention JB when she says that pop stars are demons that enslave people with their music. and the whole illuminati concept dates back decades ago with the zombifing drinks and the evil business man who is a demon who runs the world. its used in supernatural. its used in comics. its used in movies. and i think after DMC3, the series thrived off of being a walking cliche with DMC3 and DMC4 dante was an anime cliche and in DmC he (along with the story) is a typical blockbuster summer movie cliche.

to be honest, from a story standpoint, DmC, DMC3 and DMC1 are the best of the series. And recently? DMC4 wasn't really all that loved when it first came out either. Then DmC came out and everybody seemed to love it again...then it went back to being not all that cool again.

For me DmC and DMC2 are the worst in the franchise, I haven't even finished DMC2 yet because I just can't be bothered with how crap it is and DmC........well I just hope when DMC5 is made and Devil May Cry becomes great again, DmC is ignored and forgotten to have ever happened just like DMC2 is.

Dante didn't have a high moral in the beginning of DMC3. But that changed quickly when Vergil's actions and Lady's mission showed him that he was destined for more, and that he had to carry the responsibility left behind by Sparda. In DMC1, 2 and 4 he definitely had a clear sense of responsibility and moral, although it was difficult for him to show his true feelings at times.

To answer the thread's question I have to say DMC2 is BY FAR the worst game in the series. I find it funny when people claim DMC4 or DmC to be the worst offenders. Sure DmC's combat is simple and the world is quite bland, but it's still a very competent action game. DMC4's story is an incoherent mess, and the game recycles the same areas and bosses way too often, but like DmC it's still a very smooth and polished action game. DMC2 does all of these negative things even more poorly. It barely has a story at all, the combat is rather boring and repetitive, and the game never really goes anywhere, it's just a collection of unimaginative areas that are not connected in any way. And I still like it enough to occasionally pick it up and enjoy the nostalgia, so even the worst game in the series is not too bad IMO.

I don't care what cliches a game has. :lol:
As long as you don't focus on this negative aspect the rest becames pretty okay to enjoy.This both goes with DMC and DmC,it matters in what manner these cliches are portrayed to the audience.You can use them,but if you give them a hint of originality,aspect,story,good combat and atmosphere you don't pay so much attention to them at all.

But that's what Dante does from the beginning.Just like in DMC1 when he rescued Trish.
That's why he's the main protagonist and the hero-type,though he doesn't do it in a heroish manner,he mostly likes to earn trust before he puts himself in danger for anyone.

I agree with you,though DmC does have a good story,it took me some time to realise that,it's not bad,not done in a DMC manner but still good.
DMC has a decent story,but what I really like about it it's its gameplay and characters,the combat mechanics and atmosphere,these are the elements which made me a DMC fan mostly.After all it's still considered one of the hardest games ever made (DMC3 mostly) and this is another fact that made me love it,the challenge it brought and you can take pleasure in just killing and slashing things.

Yes I do agree.It's like we're criticizing a movie rather than a video game,it's like story it's all that matters.Story does matter,it's giving a reason to the game,but gameplay is the main part of the game,a game is made to be playable after all.

I don't really think DMC has a bad story,its main idea is good,but it needs more consistency and not so many contradictory things ,that's all.It can be polished very well,but it seems things didn't go this way sadly.

There's no pretending.

Some people actually do think DmC had a great story. Just because some people do like it doesn't mean they're pretending. It seems like you just can't accept the fact that DmC did what it did and a good number of people actually liked it. And just so you know, Not everyone thinks that 2013 logic of gaming.

I would like gameplay to be top notch, but I don't want the story to be boring and uninteresting, otherwise I'd be losing my drive to actually play through the game at all and wouldn't see how interesting it actually is because its story didn't keep me interested.

This is actually what i talking about. In nowadays games transform into interactive movie where whole point is "fun to watch" not "fun to play" because all "play" it's just walking straight forward and pushing one button. Few hours ago i finished Ninja Gaiden 3: RE and story there was pretty ridiculous.But every boss fight was a challenge, every boss fight forced you to experiment with your weapons and moves, every single fight was intense and fun. Game was lot more interesting that story of this game, and it's ok.
I dont want to say that developers shoudnt pay atention to story at all. They should, but only after when they have a really good gameplay.
