(I've suggested before that he should 'come back' in a prequel from the time when he and Dante were still friends. Obviously they hunted demons together, since in DMC3's 'Jackpot' scene they both knew exactly what to do and how to work together.)
But in a game after DMC4 in the timeline... DMC's universe uses the idea of immortal and transferrable souls, so even if he's dead, his soul still exists; he could reside in a weapon, he could reside in another person, he could be rebuilt in his former image (remember Mundus making Trish in Eva's image). I dunno, what if Mundus remade him and sent him back like he did her? Mundus isn't dead, after all, at the end of DMC1, just sealed.
Took the words right outta my head!
But then the question would be why he would do that in the first place? Sure, Nelo Angelo had been loyal, but he'd also been too weak. Logically, if I was some master mind evil king of the underworld, I wouldn't bother putting together a slain puppet of mine if he'd already proven that he can be beaten by 'a mortal'.
Plus, that has been done before. The next game should blow fans away and bring something new to the table, while sticking to the original DMC. I don't think anyone would really wanna see a repeat of something that's already been done.
So, why not throw in a twist?
Instead of Mundus creating a body for Vergil's soul, why not have Sparda be the one to create a body for him instead? Sparda was Mundus' equal, and he had to be sharp of mind, so why couldn't he pull off the same stunts as Mundus? He'd have every right to since it's his bloodline Mundus was screwing around with.
I'm still stuck on the reason WHY Vergil ought to come back because it depends on a lot of factors, eg. the next setting, the next 'great evil'. I'd bring Vergil back just for the sheer entertainment of seeing him and Dante exchange banter AND work together as a team. On the Yamato aspect, however, I don't think Vergil would simply want it back because it was 'his' sword. I think he'd be a bit more mature about something like that instead of whining like a little brat to have his toy back. So if he does go after it, it has to be with good reason.
So...why not turn the previous protagonist into the antagonist, and vice versa? As TCD pointed out, demons naturally have the insatiable lust for power, so what if Nero becomes more demon (as has been suggested before somewhere on the forum) and along with his transformation, his mind becomes corrupt because he has no one there to guide him? So Nero becomes this big bad guy who, maybe unlike Vergil who wanted to follow in Sparda's footsteps, Nero wants to overthrow Mundus to rule both realms. It'd be so...Nero-ish. Well, he
did think he can take Dante down, so why won't his immature demon mind think he can replace Mundus?
Which is where Vergil comes into the story - he'd have learnt the error of his ways and joined Dante's cause, and Nero going all out evil would be good reason for Vergil to want Yamato back. Seeing as it's the sword that separates the demon realm from the human realm, it gives Nero one heck of a card to play.
That's the only reason I can come up with for how and why Vergil would come back. Otherwise, I really don't know, he'd probably just be there for fan service, you know?
