Actually all of Nightmares attacks have ways to be stopped.

That's what I do. I let him to "eat me" first. I easily defeat the Skull-guys with Shotgun and then finish ,with Alastor ,Nelo Angelo as he takes massive damage like all the bosses inside Nightmare.

After that I go out - hit the things that are required for Nightmare to become vulnerable and here are the attacks. He constantly fires some small things. Those can be either avoided by running all the time or shooting Ebony & Ivory as fast as you can.

Then, he opens his "hearts" while doing one of the following attacks.

The first heart opens at his back. While attacking at his heart I use Ifrit for greater damage and while running I change to Alastor to have the Air Hike.
While this heart opens there comes a small light with it so you cannot go and start hitting it immediately. Also after the light some small ice projectiles will start coming at you so you should evade (roll works well here)them and after that try hitting the heart.

The second heart opens while he tries to stab you with some things from inside his body. You can either try to avoid them or try hitting them back with your Devil Arm. If you hit one of the back they will stop coming but if you evade they will keep trying. After they finish, you go to the heart.

The 3rd attack is something like a boomerang. The same strategy with the previous one works here. Only in this one it is far greater to hit the boomerang as it will disappear but the heart will remain for you for quite a bit of time.

The 4th attack is that giant laser ice beam attack. Just go on top of Nightmare and hit his heart with all you have got.

After that Trish comes and Nightmare is in his invulnerable state so just try to regain Devil Trigger here by taunting before he lets you free again.
Use the same strategy while staying away from walls and Trish.

After that he looks like his hearts were destroyed at some point but he is still alive and recovered somehow. Just use Alastor's final move and fly towards it while spinning for massive damage and there you go.;)

Also there is a FAQ with videos for all the missions here.
They guy who plays is a master so I think you will find it really helpful.

I didn't read everything, but I think he's talking about the gold orbs. When you choose gold mode, you can die as much as you want without the mission starting over. Atleast in DMC3.
