I chatted to the writer and she was oblivious that others would read it as offensive. It's not intentional. I know that if you write for the sake of your readers, that you eventually get to a point where you're so comfortable and familiar with them that you see them as your minions (wait, that may just be me....) but on a serious note, it's hard to get readers, it's harder to KEEP them. I've lost so many readers in the beginning because I simply didn't word it right when addressing them.
Be professional/warm. Anoint them with warm fuzzies, acknowledge them in a respectful way. You never know, they may become like, your bff from overseas *cough cough*.:shifty:
Say 'for my loyal/devoted readers' or 'for the fans of this story' or 'you lovely bunch of people deserve a hug'. Whatever you feel, though you've always done that so I don't see how you fail?
.....and if you feel like strangling them for demanding an update to a completed fic/one shot, just don't communicate with them. There's no nice way to say 'can't you read?' #harshlessonlearnt
Or you could just avoid addressing them specifically and put down your notes as if you were putting it down for yourself.
Just don't call them minions. I'm not preaching, this is seriously just what's going through my head right now, more for myself.
CT: I spent five hours straight writing and updating, went to bed at 1.15am, got up again at 6.30, am unwashed and I'm tired as hell. Went into the kindy this morning and was flooded with comments like 'have you coloured your hair?', 'you look different', 'you're glowing', 'love your makeup', 'you look ten years younger!'
