It was on a state-to-state basis. Some states had it perfectly legal, some made it illegal. The latter, was of course, only by Republican-controlled states.

This made it so that it's federally legal - making any say from the individual states amount to nothing.

Yup, it's about time. 'All' that's left now is for people to accept gays in general, or at least to stop making them feel bad or casting them out of the family. I think this'll at least reduce the psychological gap that says homosexuals are unnatural or immoral compared to heterosexuals. I'm just surprised it took the US so long.

Well there's also the issue of trans individuals. I spoke to one recently who was born physically intersex and is not permitted to marry the mother of their child in Australia.

Marriage - or if you don't want to use the term marriage, legally binding civil partnership - should be a basic human right in any civilized country
