Regardless, it's still a "**** you" to the original lore.In your opinion it is.
Dante doesn't smoke.

And don't give me that "It's a reboot" bullshit, because reboot does not mean "Butcher the original lore"
The games did that to themselves. I love the classic DMC, but the story was inconsistent.

Besides, you pick on smoking as the worst thing NT did?:/

Did you know my country's actually thinking about banning smoking in schoolyards? So it's illegal to smoke outdoors now, eh? Chroist.
They've done that in UK. No smoking in a public place anywhere. Not in schoolyards, or pubs or train stations (open air ones). Only place to smoke now is at home or specially marked smoking areas.

Lol theres tons of pretty good ones but not all of them live up to the hype. I have high hopes for DmC2, ninja did so well on this one.
I guess it could be half and half in terms of sequels
Silent hill 2, Siren 2 and Fatal frame 2 for sure. As for DMC2....well....that was pretty awful compared to 1 and 3. I'm hoping that if DmC2 is made that they have learned enough to make a good second outing.
I don't think 2 is that bad i play it in short spurts now and mainly with Lucia cuz i like her more than DMC2 Dante :)

What about Dante using a bong?:troll: What about a spliff too? Maybe Limbo is in fact a weed induced halluicnation?

And don't know if the DMC3 manga and anime are cannon, but he had bottles of Jack Daniels and went to that strip club.
There are bottles of Jack and posters of women in bikini in the last cutscene from DMC3, so, well, at least the Jack part is surely canon. (somewhere near 9:48);)

However, even if smoking is not considered cool anymore, it would have still been in character for Dante (at least, this version of him) to do so. They could have kept this aspect, maybe in one of the cutscenes in which he's speaking with Vergil in the Order's headquarter. Like, after he threw the Virility can away, he could have simply lighted a cigarette to do something else. This way, it would not just seem to be something they made him doing just to make him look cool, but a habit he had.

I love the constant claim that "NT made Dante a smoker because it's cool." I just love this bullshit where people literally make up reasons to be angry about something in DmC. Dante smoked because it's literally a normal thing many people do, especially as stress relief - like for a person who is constantly hassled by otherwordly creatures no one else believes in or can see. There's also the part where it wasmentioned that Dante smokes a cigarette after battle the way a lover smokes after sex, because combat against the demons that haunt his life was a release. I think there even may have still been an ashtray in his trailer anyway...so just because he wasn't depicted smoking didn't mean he might not still have done it :p

Is it a bad habit? Yes. Is it unhealthy? Yes, but probably not so for a Nephilim. However, claiming that the reason NT made Dante smoke was because they thought it was cool is just asinine. It confounds me somethings, this maddening complex people seem to have that nothing Ninja Theory did with DmC could ever have any positive merits; nope, everything was done as middle finger to fans and to ruin a series.

I wish they kept him smoking.
It could be a good character development.
Still I find it odd that Dante can't smoke, but drinkings okay? He's too cool to smoke, but is loser enough to drink and be an alcoholic? Logic...

But if I were Tameen, I'd kept him smoking. Because here's how I'd explain that smoking problem;

Dante doesn't smoke to look cool. Dante smokes because he's dealing with these psychological issues involving demons constantly ruining his life everywhere he goes. He has to keep fighting them all the time. He couldn't go to school all the time because of demons, he couldn't hang out with friends because of demons, he couldn't even keep a stable girlfriend because of demons. Sometimes when you're stressed out and feel like the world is against you, you just need a smoke.

People smoke to relieve stress from such a hard day, and that's what Dante does. He smokes to get rid of his problems, not to look cool. In fact, all of the things Dante does aren't intended to look cool but him just getting through another day of demon fighting. They just happen to look cool.

Also in mission 7 is where he'd stop smoking. After Kat asked if he'll still work with them, Dante will flick the cigarette out of the car window and look her in the eyes and say "count on it." Thus showing a representation of Dante's character change and actual change in how he feels.

That's something I've always figured; his smoking habit would actually be another way of showing him growing up. Like, cigarettes can't harm him, but it's still inconsiderate to others, especially humans, who it could harm. Then, some point later he gets wise and just sorta gives it up, as his consideration for others grows, eg his hedonistic lifestyle starts to wash away.

Plus he didn't know he wasn't human so he smoked to try and end his life slowly since he didn't know he can't die.

I wouldn't exactly say "smoking to end his life," but since he felt he wasn't going to be around for very long, he probably figured "what the hell?" or that he'd get done in by the demons before lung cancer could get him.

ah the logic of nostalgia fanboys
"DANTE CAN'T SMOKE, AT ALL!!!! IT BUTCHERS THE LORE" AND SMOKING IS BAD, but it ok if he drinks jack daniels and if there are ****loads of the stuff lying around his office implying that he is indeed a borderline alcoholic

To be fair it wasn't until the anime and 4 that Dante would drink yeah the novels said he did but when only playing the games it wasn't until 4 that he became somewhat of an alcoholic

Now that you mention it, he did have quite a few in DMC4. Maybe he was building a collection? o.o

But I can agree about the smoking, I wish they'd kept it in. It would've been more symbolic if near towards the end he'd ditched the smokes as if he was ditching his old lifestyle too and moving forward.
