I've been journaling for the past few weeks/months. Its a good form of release but it might sap you of ideas so maybe keep your journaling and your storytelling seperate.

I dont think its childish to write fanfiction as an adult. If you do it as a hobby or for fun go at it. The childishness comes in when you decided that your gonna be a writer thats get paid for writing batman based on your fanfiction. Buddy it doesn't work like that. Most writers who work for Marvel and DC are proffessional writers who have done other things, especially their own things. Heck they work on other things while working on batman.

Your childish not because you wanna write fanfiction but because you dont understand what it is or how to make it work for you.

This was a response to a poster on a batman forum who wanted to write fanfiction to get paid for it.

I joined a film apprenticeship program to learn how to become an actual screenwriter/director and make use of my film studies degree.

my first assignment was writing 3 loglines for a screenplay i would eventually write for the class. A logline is a 1-2 sentence summary of the story.

My mentor told me to focus more on a more personal struggle than a specific genre ( i had a crime story and a time travel one in mind) so I'm trying to figure out how to seperate the two.

I hate when I discover an alternate version of canon is not that popular among fans anymore...despite it being one of my favorite bits of canon....while I'm in the middle of writing a fic for that fandom. Because now I have no idea whether to stick with it and just sell the canon to the best of my abilities or change my canon and risk not enjoying it as much. I mean...I could glance over it, but that will get rid of character building opportunities real quick.

I really miss losing myself in the work, where the hours pass by and all conscious thought is suspended while my fingers instinctively seek out the keys and weave words into something more. I've been wanting so badly to reclaim that feeling, but editing doesn't really permit it.

Which, given that I'm almost done this round and due a break from it, isn't so much the problem as the fear that, even when I return to creating something from nothing, I still won't be able to find that Zen again.

You know you're a writer when you drive past the shipping docks and see the loading cranes and containers, and instantly in your mind you customize said loading cranes and containers into the perfect prison for your story.

Because you can't do this anymore

when you're the one driving.

I wanted to write!
My imagination only goes so far, though. I need to do a little bit more research on the topic for more creative fuel. Just to add any details I may have missed, or something that would make the scene even better. But I'm too tired to translate and/or find English translations of the documents and scrolls on the Vatican's Library site. And I'm way too tired to attempt the same with whats-his-faces-handbook on the topic from the 1600's. Yes I could probably copy and paste from the Supernatural wiki but... y'know... nah, I'd like to be sure I get the right stuff down.

But watching documentaries and interviews and lectures on how to perform an exorcism, at nearly midnight, with work early tomorrow? Can't do. I need to sleep. I won't sleep if I delve into this tonight. Which would bugger my whole week. So. Sleep.

Even though I really wanted to write.

Man, Chapter 1 is getting kinda long. I feel like I should cut down some, but I don't want to skim, it's pretty important to get this setting down. Mmmmmmmeeggghh:banghead:

I have so many research tabs open right now. I really feel like I'm going to remember all this after its all said and done, I've only visited this page 15 times so far. It's fun AND informative! *out of coffee*

The first chapter is always the longest and most tedious to write. You have to explain away everything just so the audience can be on the same level as you. Then you can drop the reckless abandonment bomb on their asses. Keep at it and you'll finish it. Then comes everything else... Thats when you'll need coffee, a energy drink, and your local Pastor for support on speed dial. >_>

I don't have my pastor on speed dial anymore. My problems keep dissappearing and it ends up on the news. He's also bald. And smells like money.

Anyway thanks :D

@Xeroxis @Sparda's rejected son I'm gonna play Devil's Advocate here and say this: you don't have to describe everything. (What? Me? Telling people not to describe things? What on earth???) But, if you feel like it's too long and you're getting bored of it, your readers will probably feel the same. You have plenty of room in the entire story to explain background details. Not to mention that it's easier to add that stuff in after you've gotten basic plot stuff down. It won't hurt to leave stuff out and let details come out as they need to.

Thanks for the advice :D
It's more like the opening scene is going on longer then I envisioned. I thought I'd fit it all in one chapter, but then it would be a little less weighty. Ma Chao is only a child once you know :'(. I think it'll work out, I like my writing to be here-in-the-now kind of pacing, but I'll be doing plenty of "blank years later" style cuts, theres no avoiding it with this kind of story.

@Xeroxis No problem! I definitely know what you mean. I've got a fic right now that was supposed to be about 2k words? And it's nearly 4k words and none of it's related to the plot. Sometimes it just happens? So many extra words.

@Sparda's rejected son I appear when those who need me require me most. -ebil laughs as thunder and lighting do their thing- Seriously, though, I'm always up for answering writing questions even if I take forever to answer them. ^^
