The technical thread: about developing DmC

Hey guys, just wanted to start this thread so we have a place to talk about some interesting stuff that happened behind the scenes of DmC, be it in technical development or mocap or whatever

To kick it off I'd like to share these character models:

20,732 polygons

19,077 polygons

17,057 polygons

For those of you who don't know, polygons are what developers use make images that look three-dimensional. I'm no computer whiz, but it's easy to understand that the more polygons, the more detailed the character looks. Apparently the characters in The Order: 1886 all have 100k+ polygons and I think we can all agree that they look pretty darn realistic. [x]

I frequently visit vimeo to look at animation showreels of animators. For instance, this is one from Ricky Wood, who has been at Ninja Theory for 9 years and of course, has worked on DmC. And here's one from Tom Bailey:

I love seeing these early animations and then comparing them to the end result. I don't know why. It's just very interesting tome.

I have many things to say about this topic but I won't say it all at once for the sake of keeping it going and keeping the forum active. If you have anything to share, feel free to do so! ;)

If we're talking game developement, then I think concept art shouldn't be missed:

Talexi and Dan Baker are some of my favourite artists since I've descovered them through DmC, and some of the pieces they created are really stunning!

Dan actually created a blog only for his stuff from DmC:

I had more stuff saved somewhere, about the game and some insight into it's developement, if I find it again, I'll post it here.

Thanks! Talexi is a very familiar name to me, so I'm always up to date when it comes to his stuff, but I haven't heard about the other guy. I like putting names to concept art. It makes things a lot more personal I guess.

Thanks for this thread, I'm pretty interested in this kinda stuff, as one day I hope to get into the game development myself and the more I know about how it's done, the better.

Same here, though I highly doubt I'll end up doing something that has anything to do with the technical aspects of developing a game. I actually recently tweeted to Dom Matthews from Ninja Theory a while ago because I know he's the product manager at NT (did y'all know he originally came from Capcom? not during DmC) so I asked him what he studied and what kind of tasks he does at NT. It's nice because he literally always takes the time to answer my tweets, I even sent him something which didn't get a reply, but he replied three days later. Apparently he went through the trouble to find my tweet. :) Anyway, he was saying that he was mostly responsible for the marketing of the games, I think that's more my stuff.

I'm loving the open development of Hellblade, I wish we could've seen that for DmC. It would be so fun to see how the actors mocapped the scenes. And judging by the tidbits of video and images I see here and there, footage was taken on set, just not shared. :/

Slightly off topic but I'm the last person who posted in the sales thread and idk what the rules are re: double posting.

I was just on Green Man Gaming and noticed that DmC is in the top ten sellers, and it's not even on sale. That's neat!

Now of course, I don't know what that means in terms of actual numbers, but I'm always happy with 0.01% extra exposure for the game. (I was gonna buy Star Wars The Force Unleashed but Steam reviews aren't overwhelmingly positive so idk I'm inclined to buy it for 8 bucks on PS3.)

Not really sure what Capcom were playing at. They should've released DmC DE on PC, like they did with DMC4. The PC community seemed to have wholeheartedly embraced DmC, with good following in the community.
